The rhymes are pretty bad, but the message got through to my kiddo. He evened answered some of the questions in the story! But at one point he did say, “Just keep reading, mama.” 🤣

I thought Jayneen Sanders did an excellent job conveying the meaning of empathy throughout this book. Empathy is a character trait that is often difficult for children to wrap their head around. The main character shares many of his/her experiences in which he/she has shown empathy toward another person. I appreciate that many of the pages provide opportunities for further discussion. Empathy is a character trait that is often difficult for children to wrap their head around. The main character shares many of his/her experiences in which he/she has shown empathy toward another person. I appreciate that many of the pages provide opportunities for further discussion. For example, "Have you ever been bullied? How did it make you feel? What did you do?" Sanders uses real-life examples to help her readers connect with and better understand the story. I used this in my 4th grade classroom to help teach about empathy. Prior to reading the story, my students did not have a solid idea about what empathy was. The story helped them make connections and guided their thinking toward being able to define empathy. After we finished reading, I asked my students if they could define empathy again. Here is how they described empathy: "It is like taking a walk in someone else's shoes;" "It is understanding how someone feels and thinks;" "It is remembering how you felt at one point and helping someone through the same feeling." I think this book can be read to students of all ages. Adults might benefit from reading it, too!

Great picture book for small children. Wonderful, practical lessons for kids on ways to be kind in their daily lives and why it’s so important. Gives adults many ways to discuss the topic with kids.

A pedantic tale of why we should be nice to each other; for example Meiners' book "Understanding and Care." A pedantic tale of why we should be nice to each other; for example Meiners' book "Understanding and Care."
