This is an excellent collection of mostly strong stories. As with any anthology, not all of the stories work, but most here do. My favorites include: The Midnight Show by M.B. Vujacic. There was a brief part in this story that I head to skip over, because it was just too disgusting, but otherwise, this tale of evil clowns and bigtop murder was exactly my kind of story. Punk Rock Reanimator by Chad Lutzke. My favorite in the whole collection, this is actually the first story by Lutzke I've ever read This is an excellent collection of mostly strong stories. There was a brief part in this story that I head to skip over, because it was just too disgusting, but otherwise, this tale of evil clowns and bigtop murder was exactly my kind of story. Punk Rock Reanimator by Chad Lutzke. My favorite in the whole collection, this is actually the first story by Lutzke I've ever read, and I liked it so much that immediately on finishing it, I ordered a copy of his collection Night as a Catalyst. This story features a descendent of everyone's favorite mad scientist, Herbert West (and I could easily picture Jeffrey Combs in the role), trying out his reanimation serum at a punk rock show. Shellfish by Karen Runge. Tress is spending a weekend with her sort-of boyfriend, Tom, at a beach cottage she remembers fondly from a childhood holiday. It seems that she's forgotten an important part of her previous visit, although parallels during her new trip dredge up old memories. Tress is not a likable character, but I was sucked into her story all the same. Runge, like Lutzke, is a completely new discovery for me, but her writing is also a revelation. Exile also by Karen Runge. Another story with a less than sympathetic narrator. Briefer than "Shellfish," the writing here is just as engrossing, as our main character Elise descends into madness during self-imposed isolation. Lutzke's other contribution, revenge tale Holes is also excellent, although it featured a dog death, which I always find upsetting and which marred my enjoyment of the tale. Warning that Simon Dewar's memorable story, The Perfect Figure Eightalso contains animal cruelty. Although it is otherwise a melancholy but poignant and effective piece.
