Back before Madison had been born, Jimmy had murdered her grandfather, so to see him killed in this manner gives her slight satisfaction. However, she can’t help but notice the similarities between the way Jimmy was murdered and an old case in which the murderer, Constantine Romanov, got away, not before nearly killing Madison. Is Constantine back and is Madison still on his hit list? Power Struggle is the first Detective Madison Knight book that I have read. Whilst I would advise reading the series in order, I can honestly say that I never had an issue understanding the plot, nor the characters. There are some moments when it would have been good to have known the back story, but when it came to those that actually mattered, Ms. Arnold had given us information to understand them fully. The book not only deals with Madison and her career as a detective, but also her family and personal life too. She is a tough woman with a soft centre, but she makes sure that she always puts on her game face and never lets anyone see how scared and unsure she is on the inside. Ms. Arnold had me gripped to each and every page, which heightened with the discovery of a second victim, and then the confirmation that Constantine was back, and that he was not only targeting Madison this time, but her family and friends too. There were numerous people who could have been pulling Constantine’s strings, but who and why wasn’t revealed until the very end. The book is filled with mystery and suspense, surrounded by plenty of action. It is a terrific book that was not only enjoyable but intensified as the plot progressed. I can’t wait to read more by Ms. Arnold.

Is her head screwed on straight or is she losing her objectivity and missing precious clues to bring Constantine down? Gritty and emotionally jagged, Carolyn Arnold’s POWER STRUGGLE pours on the suspense as one twisted assassin plays hide and go seek with a detective who refuses to give up, no matter what. Madison is a tough as nails cop, headstrong, and brilliant at finding the needle in the haystack, but her emotions are involved and there is a sense of recklessness and desperation in her actions. Hard-boiled police work at its best, suspense that is taut and the urgent race against time make this an edge of your seat read as danger hits too close to home for this detective and her frayed edges begin to show! The Russian mob has been a running thread through the last several books and a lot of those threads will be solved. The characters are well defined and it's been a pleasure watching as Madison has aged, has seemingly turned her personal life around and survived whatever life has thrown at her. Her devotion to her family comes through in bright lights in this story. The premise is a good one with lots of excitement, credible suspects as bodies fall, and a cold hearted villain. Although this does fine as a stand-alone, as always, I highly recommend starting at the beginning so as to not miss any of those nuggets that make this a top notch series. Many thanks to the author for the advance digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Major Crimes Detective Madison Knight has mixed emotions about Jimmy Bates murder. Maybe it was Karma that he’s lying in his bed, brutally murdered. After all, he was responsible for her grandfather’s death. Could the hitman that had almost killed Madison be back to finish the job? Could the Russian Mafia be tying up loose ends? Can she, will she, be able to move past the personal and be a professional? Her friends, coworkers, and family are concerned, but they do not stand in her way. Can she, will she, be able to move past the personal and be a professional? Her friends, coworkers, and family are concerned, but they do not stand in her way. She lives with the head of the Stiles Police Department Swat Team, Toby Sovereign. I am hoping she doesn’t do something foolish, like keeping secrets from him and putting herself and those closest to her in danger. I love Toby. Thank goodness he has the patience to put up with her stubbornness. Madison has has severe commitment issues. Lies by omission are still lies. I would find it hard to trust her, as does Toby, but he loves her dearly and hopes she will come around, me too. Sometimes I wonder if she has a death wish because she can be so reckless and careless. I think that strong characters do have a wish to keep those they love from being a victim or put in the path of a bullet, and feel they are able to handle things themselves. And I do love my strong women, so who knows, maybe I would do the same thing if I wasn’t more of the spectator type. Power Struggle is a complicated mystery. As the deaths pile up, the mystery and danger grows. Lives are at stake and we know Bulldog Madison will put it all on the line. Maddie, if I am ever in trouble, I’ll be calling on you. Even when she’s on the verge of losing her self control and sanity, there is that special something that clicks in her mind, refusing to give up as the pieces fall into place. Action, suspense, not so much romance, but lots of love from Troy, Terry, her partner, coworkers, family and friends. They all play an important part in her life and I feel like they are my friends too. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Power Struggle by Carolyn Arnold. See more at fundinmental

4.5/5 Power Struggle is a murder-mystery with a thriller tone that takes the readers on a journey of action, suspense and emotions.  Madison Knight, a smart and strong detective, is not one to go down without a fight, even when the stakes are high. The nightmares haunted her ever since Constantine Romanov, a Russian hit-man, slid through the prison bars ten months ago. She tried to remind herself of how impossible it is for him to return to Stiles—the fictional city this story is set in—but when a murder case pops up, Madison knows how this all can connect back to the Russian mafia; all she needs is a proof or Constantine himself. I really liked this book. The third-person limited narration works as the strongest asset of the story. It's uncommon to find a murder mystery that not only keeps the suspense built or the killer a secret but also tags the readers alongside the protagonist. There aren't any disclosures or firm theories shoved in the face of the reader; there are possible speculations that are mentioned even if they aren't correct. This made it possible to penetrate the mind of Detective Knight and actually live the conundrum. Those traits could indicate shock, nervousness or guilt. After all, she had the attention of Stiles PD and not in a good way. The person to find a dead body always fell under suspicion.  Another positive point is the slow disclosure of revelations; this made the story more of a progressive account rather than an information dump. Everything doesn't makes sense immediately but as things keep unraveling, the bigger picture comes into focus. It's almost phenomenal how everything is intriguing to a reader despite of being exposed to all the current happenings in the scene. Characters are quite well developed with a special, and much deserved, emphasis on the main character, Madison. She is an excellently crafted persona who isn't flawless or ideal. She makes mistakes, she regrets making those mistakes, and tries her best to correct them. Not only this, her commitment issues made her relationship with Troy, her boyfriend, difficult, leading to more turmoil to an already long list of issues. Madison's equation with her mother is another addition to a hard but realistic life of this character. Basically, the story is not just about a killer and his killing, but also dips into the protagonist's problems. The climax was good. More than the execution of it, I loved how it revolved around our fighter lady and she did what she wanted to do—what she had to do. There wasn't any damsel in distress situation set up for a man, or the SWAT team (of which Troy was a part of) in this regard, to rescue Madison or her sister, Chelsea. This definitely fueled my need for strong female characters and all in all, made my day! Another teeny tiny bit that made my feminist soul happy was how Madison wasn't resigning from this case, despite of her personal connection to the scenario, because she wanted to prove to her boss that the police force is not a boys-only-club.  Just one thing that didn't work for me—and cost a half-star—was the failure to not use the mainstream tactic that pops into one's head when there's a number code to decipher. Over the entire length of the novel, the expert team who had strained their eyes by continuously staring at the ten digits, that were meant to be something, couldn't figure out what it was. In fact, this wasn't even what let me down; it's the timing of the revelation that disappointed me. Suddenly, now that the climax is going to peak, everybody gets to this ten-digit-code and cracks it in a few minutes...what? Why didn't they try doing that all this time? And the code is apparently an important evidence and clue.  I totally recommend this to those who enjoy murder-mysteries and a female detective who is keen on solving a crime as well as her own dismantled life.  Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book via a blog tour sign up but that in no way influences this review. I had the pleasure of meeting Detective Madison Knight when I read In the Line of Duty book #7 in the Madison Knight series. I admired her for tough as nails demeanor, her tenacity and her dedication in doing her job. I also saw the lengths she would go through to protect those she loved. I admired her for tough as nails demeanor, her tenacity and her dedication in doing her job. I also saw the lengths she would go through to protect those she loved. I related to her on so many levels and so I could not wait to dive into the latest installment featuring this no- nonsense detective. I was not disappointed. All the traits I came to love was on display once again in this installment. The story began with Madison at the murder scene of the man who had murdered her grandfather. This is the first time she feels no empathy for a victim, but as a professional, she would do her best to find out who was responsible. The scene mimics another murder, committed by the Russian Mafia’s top assassin, the man responsible for her current nightmares. Still reeling from the recent loss of a friend and colleague, the thought that the cause of her nightmares may be back was not appreciated. Therefore, when the receipt of a threatening letter revealed that her speculations were a reality she faced the knowledge that her life and those of her loved ones was at stake. Power Struggle is more than a story about a detective trying to solve a case. It demonstrated the emotional upheavals officers of the law face while trying to carry out their duties. Not only did Madison had to deal with a psychopath determined to kill her she had to deal with a mother who did not approve of her career choice and who blamed her for the danger facing their family. In addition, she also had to deal with the emotional challenges of being in a relationship with a fellow cop. Tensions and fears were high and the character’s emotions leapt off the pages. I understood Madison’s need to protect those she loved, no matter the cost. She acted reckless on occasions, but I could not fault her. One never knows how they would react to danger until they are facing it. Although I did not start the series from the beginning. I can see based on my limited knowledge that Madison has come a long way as it relates to her personal relationships. Knowledge of the villain’s identity from the outset did not make me enjoy the story any less. What made intriguing was waiting to see what he had planned for Madison. I curious to know how his plans for Madison tied in with his current spate of murders. Was he working for the mafia or has he gone rogue? The suspense laid in the fact that Madison had no clue as to the villain’s next move. Waiting to see what his next move would be, kept me on edge for most the story. The author’s impeccable writing style had me glued to the pages. Her attention to details and the manner in which she presented the story made it easy for me to connect with every aspect of the story. She pulled me and kept me entertained to the end. Conclusion/Recommendation. Overall, this was a good story and one I recommend for fans of police procedurals.

I thought a book about the Russian mafia was going to have a lot of violence in but Carolyn Arnold surprised me with how she told the story of the murders but didn't go into too much graphic details as I don't like books with too much violence. It was more focused on the main cop character and as she someone I liked from the beginning of the book I was rooting for her to catch the villain and not get hurt in the process. When something goes missing from the polices evidence room I was on the edge of my seat wondering how it happened and couldn't put the book down until I found out more. Also a family member is brought into the conflict and its touch and go whether they are going to survive which had me gripped. My first book by this author and I liked her writing style the words she uses are not over complicated so it was a great read in bed when my brain is winding down after a long day. I am definitely going to read some more of the Madison Knight Series. This was number 8 in the Madison Knight Series and although I had not read any of the other books I didn't feel too lost as though I couldn't relate to the characters or understand what was happening. It might have been useful to know a little bit more about the killer as he is from her past but it isn't a necessity to read this book.

Although this book can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the first set of books as this is book eight, just to get an understanding of Madison and her life and how she gets caught up with the Russian hitman Constantine. Great book by Carolyn Arnold, can’t wait to see what comes next.

I recently read Arnold's latest book in the Brendan Fisher series and I absolutely loved it. Arnold's work is definitely on par with the top writers in crime and this book was no different. Arnold does a great job of giving the reader enough information as you read along of how the events in previous books relate to this one. This was such a page turner; fast paced and exciting throughout. Although Arnold gives the reader plenty of scene setting from the synopsis, there is so much more packed in there. As Madison works a homicide and has her suspicions on who the killer is, everything that goes on with the other characters, working the ins and outs of the case, keeps you guessing throughout. The almost only constant throughout the book is that Constantine is back; but how, why and what he wants is a complete guess until the end. I had no idea how and where this book was going to go which is what I really love in a great book. I don't to try to guess myself too much, I really enjoy finding out and being led through. The book has a very realistic feel as well; Arden has definitely done her research which is another really great aspect for me. Sometimes, crime books can feel a little bit over the top or unrealistic to follow. I really enjoyed the characters in this book as well. They felt very relatable and I did feel a bit sorry for Madison at times. With everything that's going on with her family and friends, she does seem to have quite a tough time of it from them all. It was good to see this side in a police procedural, rather then just getting on with the crimes. Overall, this was a great book. I am really hoping to go back and read the other books in the series. Anybody who likes a good police procedural should pick up a book by Arnold. I cannot recommend it enough!

I’ve read a few of the Madison Knight mysteries and have loved them! I’d really like to go back and read all of them! Even though they can be read as a standalone, I know I’m missing stuff. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if I read all of them in order. Carolyn Arnold has recently turned into one of my favorite police procedural-type books. She writes so gritty… it’s exactly what you would expect from hard detectives that are way too overworked. In Power Struggle she packs it full of suspense with these hide and seek thriller. Knight is searching for one messed up assassin! Knight shows a bit more of her human side in Power Struggle. She’s battling this twistedly-brillant assassin and it’s personal this time. She’s more reckless than ever and she has this carelessness about her that’s putting her (and her family) on a dangerous line… but man, it makes a superb suspense novel! Arnold writes perfect characters that we can all connect with. She really creates a real person in Madison Knight. I think we can all relate to how she handles some of these situations… her nightmares and the PTSD makes it so she’s more human than super cop! Arnold weaves a terrific story that unwinds bit-by-bit right in front of our eyes, she gives us these little teases and we think we might have it… but it’s never quite right! I loved the villain… I know, silly, but a good bad guy is hard to come by! Arnold had me flying through the pages with how consistent and fast-paced it was! I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I will leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

Carolyn Arnold has written a spellbinding cop vs bad guy mystery and it is definitely worth reading. This is what I would call Crime Fiction and it’s very well done. I enjoyed the interplay between the cops and their superiors. Maybe even more so, she seemed to draw a very good picture of them through her writing. Having a feel of what a character looks like makes every read a more enjoyable one. In the long run I did have a few moments that made me want to tell Maddie to “buck up” but I have decided that this is my own upbringing and not reality. Arnold’s book is probably a good description of reality. Nor have I ever been faced with the possibility of losing my life as well as endangering other’s lives. I don’t think we can really judge an author in this sense of a story. Who can know how being that afraid might feel? Fortunately, very few of us. This was definitely a good book and one to put on your “wish list” of reading. I hope we see a “Detective Madison Knight series” begin. Madison’s plucky and I liked her.

I absolutely loved this book. I hadn’t read any of the previous books in the series and I kind of feel like I’m missing out. Not in the sense that you have to read it in order, just in the sense that the author lacked so much information into one book that I want to read more! I completely agree with the fact that you could start the series with any book, but I imagine if you have a preference to read events chronologically then you’d probably want to start with the first book in the series. This book has so many great aspects to it; there’s plenty of drama and the suspense that will leave you eager for the conclusion of the book. The author had me on the edge of my seat waiting for what was going to happen next. The tension in the book built perfectly, starting from the beginning of the book to the end. The cast of characters that this author has created is relatable and realistic. The book didn’t seem long while reading because the story was so engrossing and fast paced but it was actually about 450 pages – so I wouldn’t consider it a short book. Overall I gave this book 4.5 stars and would recommend it to anyone who like a good suspense read. **4.5 Stars - I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

From here Constantine becomes brazen and lets his presence be know making her fear for not only her life but her loved ones. This is an action packed, thrilling read that has you feeling the fear, frustration  and  relief that Madison is going through, throughout the whole story. This is book 8 in the Madison Knight series, and whilst it can be read as stand alone, I did feel I had missed so much of what had gone on previously, though there is some back story.

This is book 8 in the series featuring Detective Madison Knight, but I found it worked very well as a stand-alone read, even though there were references to earlier cases. She gets police officers assigned to watch all her family and then meets her sister Chelsea to explain. Then Yasmine is murdered and next Chelsea goes missing. Plenty more to follow in this great story. A gripping story which left me wanting to read more of the Detective Madison Knight series. Disclosure. This post is a review of an e-book I was sent for free. All opinions are my own.

This is the second book I have read from this author and the first in this series. While there are some references to the prior novel in regards to Madison's relationship involving Constantine and her vengeance for revenge; I felt that this book could still be read as a stand alone novel. The momentum that I was feeling in the beginning dissipated. This is because there was a lot of conversation happening and not much else. If I had built this relationship with the other characters and a strong bond with Madison, I probably would not have minded it as much. Yet, I struggled to stay in the moment. However, if you can stick with the storyline a while longer, it does start to pick up momentum at the half way point. Madison got stronger along the way as well for me. This is a good read.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Although she’s not sad to see that he’s dead, she is concerned because his murder looks the same as one by Constantine. He nearly killed her the last time he was in town and she’s afraid that he’s going to try to finish the job. And then she finds out that’s exactly why he’s back… Power Struggle is full of suspense and action. Madison and her family are in danger and her situation seems impossible. I’ve read several of Carolyn Arnold’s books and have enjoyed them all and this one doesn’t disappoint.

This is the second book in the Madison Knight series that I've read. After reading the last one, I said that I must go back and read more. Madison Knight almost died ten months ago at the hands of Constantine Romanov, a hitman for the Russian mafia.
