This is perhaps one of the top 5 examples of great BDSM romance writing that is realistic and that takes things at a pace which makes sense. As a masochist the pain thing for me is a sensitive subject - if authors get it all wrong I find myself disliking the story. This one got it right - I REALLY appreciated that every time there was pain Tom didn't float off into subspace --- in real life that's the fact. Some days you just struggle to get even close to that and others you fly like an eagle. Mischa as a Dom is someone who I would absolutely play with - because being a Dom is ingrained in his personality. He doesn't strut about like a peacock in the off hours - but he's capable of using the skills when necessary. He is solid, caring, and fair with Tom. I get at the beginning he was kind of portrayed as a Domslut - a new sub each and every time, just like napkins. However he changed and he was able to admit he changed and to give the relationship his all. As it turned out that level of commitment was very much needed. Also excellent here is the dialogue and the evolution of Mischa and Tom. Each goes on a journey that you get to see, fully explore, and embrace. The only thing that kept this from 5 stars for me (really it is 4.5) is that it was a bit slow going at times. On the one hand I loved that it went slow so it didn't feel rushed and on the other it could have gone just a bit faster.

Okay, so I read this ages ago and never got around to writing a review. But this is definitely one of my faves. It's chock full of BDSM goodness, including medical play, pain, and CBT. I think what won me over here was Tom's inexperience, and his previously unexplored need to submit. And Mischa is there every step of the way, guiding him, pushing him, testing his limits. Some of those limits are interesting: Tom doesn't necessarily get off on pain, but he definitely gets off on taking it because Misha makes him. To me, that's a fascinating dynamic. So check this one out, and see what you think. Highly recommended!

This is a strong pain bdsm story. From CBT to struggle, fight and restraint it runs the gamut of erotic pain. The story itself is pretty strong. It has it's own voice which was surprising since this is a TQ offering. I was very disappointed in the ending. It was very abrupt and awkward. It does not end where I think it should have. I do believe it's an HEA but others may feel it's an HFN. An epilogue or an extra chapter to get a little farther past the recovery mode they have entered into would have made this a 5 star read. NOTE: There are spoilers in the comments. If you are like me and prefer to be surprised with how far they will go with their kinks don't read the comments. If you want more info on the types of BDSM they engage in, I did outline it pretty fully in the comments for others that asked.

WOW! This was an amazing book for me. I LOVED IT! Mischa is an amazing dom. Lovely too. What he did with Tom blew my mind. This is a book that caused me to be horny from the beginning through the end. The D/s part was heady. I was in heaven reading how Mischa topped Tom. Tom is a totally sweetie pie. He's so adorable. Watching him delve into the SM side of BDSM was a total vicarious thrill for me. I devoured every little scene with Mischa pushing the limits and doling out delicious pain. Oh the sweet, sweet pain! Pain masochist alert! The pain in this story is just right. I shiver in delight at each scene involving pain. HURT ME, please. I was very angry (view spoiler)[at the literal gay bashing. I wanted to hurt those bastards. WTF. I can't stand bulllies like those mo-fos. Oh I was so angry!!! I was very impressed with Mischa's method to bring Tom out of his depression. This story was pure erotica and romance for me. It's one of the sweetest romance stories I've read in a very long time. (hide spoiler)] I enjoy Ms. Conwy's writing style. I connected with Tom from the initial contact. Tom was a more complicated grad student than I expected. Mischa is the embodiment of an ideal dom for me. Obviously it's unrealistic, but still, he's a fantasy dom in my book. I recommend this book to those who enjoy a BDSM lifestyle and m/m romance.

3.5 Stars Good (un)Clean Fun! You know what I liked most of all about this book? No, not the copious amounts of kinky sex. OK, Ok it was kinda that. But more than that was the organicity of the conversations between Mischa & Tom. They're very relatable & felt natural. They both sound like real people, having a real conversation with appropriate reactions. I also love how they tease each other, have fun together; how blunt Mischa is just for the sake of making Tom blush. Then again I do have a 3.5 Stars Good (un)Clean Fun! I also love how they tease each other, have fun together; how blunt Mischa is just for the sake of making Tom blush. Then again I do have a weakness for the dirty talk so *shrug* what can I say? It sucked me right in. Tom takes to submission like a duck to water under Mischa's guidance. I felt like his struggles lent credence to the book as well in that he didn't turn into an automaton the second Mischa put on his Dom face. I like that he asks questions, uses his safewords, can't always articulate things exactly right but through it all he never comes across as whiny, simpering or annoying. He's able to maintain his identity AND submit to Mischa without compromising himself. They're equals outside of the bedroom or erm… playroom. I know his naivety might seem little far-fetched but I found it adorable. Mischa… what's not to like? Hot-check. Dominant-double check. Naughty-check check. Sense of humor-check. Not a psycho-check. Tom got lucky in that bar. I am just saying. I also liked the fact that he was just as insecure & nervous about the progression of their relationship as Tom; that he's not portrayed as aloof & always in control. The drawbacks to this are there's not a whole lot that actually happens. I mean, it's basically their relationship progression with a healthy dose (read lots) of sex. All good but if you're looking for depth… ahem. Second the sex is rote. It goes a little something like this: Tom hissing & whimpering at the burn then shifting the pain into pleasure with lots of "Ahhhhh… Sir… Please…" then there's some seeing white as they both inevitably come simultaneously followed by more whimpering from Tom when Mischa pulls out. The end. There might be some position variation but that's pretty much every single sex scene. Did I mention there's a lot of sex? Hot but still a girl needs a little variety. It's the spice of life you know!

This will be a difficult review for me, i will say this right off the top. I have also read a few BDSM stories and have enjoyed them as well. This one however, had kink I don’t find exciting or hot. In fact it kinda turned me off, which in turn turned me off to a great deal of the story. Mischa likes to inflict pain, and Tom loves to receive it, so while i have read this in other BDSM books of course, the intensity of it wasn’t my thing at all. But, i will say there was enough story to make me really like Mischa and Tom. I found them cute and hot and I so wanted to see them come together and find some happiness. What i also liked about this was the tender side of their relationship, the humor, the snarky banter. All of this kept me reading. Just when I thought I might actually not finish this book, something happened in the story to keep me glued. It felt like the author was listening to my wishes and gave me something to sink into. I am giving this 3 stars, because of the type of kink, but I enjoyed this enough to want to see these two good guys till the end….

I was in the mood to read kink and this delivered. This is one i am rating on pure enjoyment--it was Haaaaawt. Overuse of epithets was distracting, however, and character development didn't really strike for me until 3/4 into the story. Luckily, the first 75% held my pervy interest long enough to get there.

This book just didn't work for me. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it because of so many good reviews, but frankly, I think it reads like a 'BDSM for Dummies'. Tom's sincerity and openness is frightfully honest and Mischa's care even with his intensity is reassuring. And make no mistake, this is some intense S&M, but is it beautifully rendered. I had a weird reaction to this book, didn’t particularly like the beginning, devoured the middle, didn’t particularly like the ending either. I really want to chop the first 10 pages and the last 10 pages off the book and write something different. I really want to chop the first 10 pages and the last 10 pages off the book and write something different. The book started abruptly and ended abruptly but smoothed out into a building romantic tension between the two characters through the middle. Mischa has kept his life compartmentalized; he doesn’t do relationships. He’s a very successful investment broker. The type of guy he’d like to date doesn’t really fit him sexually, and those he is into sexually he never gets to know. Mischa’s a Dom and he has a one scene policy, “one boy one scene,” that’s it. Now he’s doing a favor to a friend to meet a sub new to the area is. He’s agreed to meet the guy at a bar and introduce him to the scene locally. Looking across the room he spots one guy who could possibly be his potential sub for the night. Tom is in the bar trying to cheer up his dead uncle’s husband when he catches the eye of the gorgeous man across the bar. When the man approaches his table he sees nothing wrong with a little flirting, he deserves a little attention after all the work he’s been putting in on his master’s thesis. When the man straight out mistakes him for a slave boy Tom’s more than a little offended…well offended and a little intrigued. He’s always had fantasies; this might just be the opportunity he needs to explore them a little. So the opening to this book was very much the literal equivalent of “Nice shoes, wanna fuck?” I think the reason this bothered me so much was because of the level of trust needed to truly give yourself over to a BDSM relationship. Tumbling into bed and allowing a complete stranger the level of pain and access that Tom gives to Mischa right off the bat just didn’t ring true to me. If you accept the premise though, I do like how the relationship develops between these two men. I really loved how Mischa appreciated Tom’s personality not just his submissive nature. These two had such a lovely balance between their dating life and their kink life. Tom really needed their sessions to be able to focus and calm down. The more trust he built with Mischa the further these two could take things. I liked the little bit of a brat that Tom could be on occasion; I enjoyed his spunk and quality of character. Mischa has heavy sadistic tendencies and Tom’s masochism is the perfect counterpoint. While I can’t understand personally how someone would want that level of pain, I could definitely see the back and forth here between these two. It’s not my personal kink, but it definitely works for Mischa and Tom. There was such caring behind the pain, no humiliation between these two. And Tom’s blushes were so adorable! I really felt like this was one of the better depicted BDSM dynamics I’ve ever read. I loved that their relationship was more free form, without obsessing over rules there was still a wonderful structure to their dynamic. Tom gave his submission at of want/need to please his Dom. He’d take what Mishca gave him whether it would make him float and lose himself in sub space or not. Pleasing Mischa is what ultimately makes Tom happy On top of that of course, the kinky sex here was fantastically HOT! There was such chemistry between these two it just steamed off the page. But as hot as the sex is, the further into the book you get, the more real emotions become the focus. I really loved watching these two move from lust into love. The incident ,(view spoiler)[the attack on Tom (hide spoiler)] really changed the dynamic between the two men and just enriched their relationship. Mischa was desperate to be able to help Tom deal with his trauma and yet he is so wonderfully patient. I appreciated that everything doesn’t get completely resolved, but I did feel like the story ended rather abruptly. I do hope that in the future books we get more of Tom and Mischa. I would love to see their relationship continue to right itself. All in all this was a fantastic BDSM novel with wonderful characterization. I would give this a solid 4.5 stars only losing ½ a star because of the almost rushed beginning and ending of the story. I really enjoyed this book immensely. If you’re a fan of BDSM novels and haven’t read this one, you should dive right in!

I thought this book was fascinating. The way it explores BDSM is very different from the way most books out there that I have read treat this topic. Partially, that is because it goes into pain play, but partially it is about the unique relationship Mischa and Tom build together. Also, while Mischa is an experienced Dom, he goes through just as much of a learning process as the new-to-it-all sub, Tom. It is very clear that Tom wants the things that Mischa does to him - there is no "coercion" except in scenes, when Tom asks to be coerced (a sort of "coercion play", I guess). Then, it's full steam ahead. Outside the bedroom, though, both are equal partners and both struggle to adapt to a new life as lovers. Tom is not exactly a professional sub. He is, in fact, so new to the "scene" that he isn’t even looking. But he is sort of curious even if he has no idea what he's in for, and Mischa's calm and collected responses to his initial questions intrigue him. I think he's lucky to have run into a somewhat responsible, if somewhat crude, Dom, or he might have been in real trouble. Mischa makes sure that the way Tom gets to explore submission, some of the more common BDSM kinks, and his particular fetish, pain, moves at a speed that Tom can cope with. Mischa has a lot to learn. He is rough, likes to play the tough guy, and thinks he's God's gift to subs. Initially, he doesn’t even respect them very much, and I don’t think he's ever connected to any of them emotionally. Luckily, Tom is the right guy to teach him differently – on multiple levels. And to think it all starts with a misunderstanding – that is really very well done! I really liked the balance between the time they spend as partners and the time they spend in their "roles". The book shows that they are full characters and real people, not just men with role-playing fantasies. This is a variation of a Dom/sub relationship that I would like to read more about. I certainly look forward to the sequels! If you like BDSM books that go further into pain play than most, if the psychology of the Dom and the sub interest you equally (since both have a voice in this story), and if you're looking for a hot read with some very, very kinky scenes, then you will probably like this novel.

This is an unusual take on the BDSM theme. We have a hard-core Dom with sadistic tendencies & a novice sub without a true masochistic bent...yet they work so well together! The sadism was a bit hard to take at times but the genuine trust & caring that they shared seemed to make it okay in the end. I liked the way that Tom wasn't humiliated or subjugated by Mischa. For me, I find books where the humiliation of the sub is an integral part of the scene, harder to read than this book was. This book was a really satisfying read & I found the ending perfect (not so for other reviewers) I like the fact that the book ended on an upward swing to something better rather than tying up all the loose ends. Life can sometimes be messy without a neat resolution of problems so this ending made for a more 'realistic' conclusion for me. Having said that, I would love to read more books with these characters. Does Toby get his HEA? Does the carpenter-sub (can't remember his name) find his perfect Dom? What does Mischa do to Tom to further stretch his boundaries? June 2013... Having read this book at least 4 times now, I thought it was time to update my review ... this book is awesome in its kinkyness ... Mischa is an über Dom with a depraved imagination ... the kink in this book is entirely about submitting to pain & Tom rarely gets to fly even tho' he does get off on the kink ... I wouldn't recommend this book as your first foray into BDSM, but it is a wonderful read ... one of my favourites although I'd struggle to call it a 'comfort read' ... highly recommended (along with the free shorts associated with these two characters) P.S. The carpenter sub is Andy & his story is beautifully told in Alphabet Soup

3.5 stars. Competent m/m bdsm romance with serious amount of kink. Mischa is a 40 year old investment manager and hard-ass Dom who picks up 26 year old graduate college student Tom in a hotel bar as a result of mistaken identity. Hmmmm, ok. I'd give this 5 stars for the book being what it is: Ideal. Great! Applause~applause! Highly recommend! As far as the story goes? Loved the characters, enjoyed the dynamic between them. La~la~la romance, perfectly executed BDSM scenes(for the most part), balance between the two, add HEA... should have been a slam dunk. I just... I... sorry, I got bored. GAH! Sorry. 5 star quality, my selfish personal enjoyment meter gives it a 3.

There are a lot of really good things I could say about A Russian Bear... unfortunately, there are just as many negative things I could say about it. At one point, I put it down for a few weeks, read something else, and eventually finished it--if I'd truly hated it, I wouldn't have bothered picking it back up again, but I definitely didn't love it. The set up was brilliant (I bought it because I read the first chapter and thought it was great). And I liked the boys, at least for the most part. M There are a lot of really good things I could say about A Russian Bear... unfortunately, there are just as many negative things I could say about it. Mischa didn't really come off as a Dom to me (and overall the BDSM doesn't work for me in this one). The Doms I know aren't attached to their leathers, don't need them to feel "big and bad." I also do not understand Mischa's policy "one boy, one scene, no reason to bother with his name, never going to play with him again anyway." I've seen that in a number of books, but have yet to run across it in real life--not that I know every single Dom out there (far from it, in fact), but it would have felt more real if Mischa simply preferred not to form attachments for X reason, even if X reason was the old tried and true broken heart/bad relationship in the past. But let's face it, there are only so many BDSM players out there, how can anyone decide that they're not going to play with the same boy more than once, *ever*? Even a bisexual male would quickly find himself out of play partners in the local community after a while. Overall, this is not a book I would recommend to my friends, especially the ones who enjoy a realistic BDSM read. That said, I would happily try reading other genres from the author. The writing is solid and the story, while flawed, is decent.

Loved this story, and this couple. I almost feel like it's a tutorial for BDSM, that's how informative I think it is. Having said that, it may feel a bit slow for some people, and it did drag a bit in parts and feel somewhat repetitive. I would say just stick with it. Even though I felt it could have ended many times before it did, I appreciated the additional scenes/situations. I loved the insightful approach to BDSM, the characters, both individually and together, their interactions and their journey. They made me laugh out loud, smile, get teary eyed. Very well drawn and three dimensional. I love a kind, caring Dom who knows when to be stern and Dom-y and Mischa was exactly that. Tom was a strong, intelligent sub who wanted to please his Dom. Loved them! I think I already said that lol. Off to the next in the series. I want to see if Andy gets a Dom! Could be Toby? Dun Dun Dunnnnn.

This book ended up being so sweet... Esp. liked Mischa, what a great character. I never really found I connected much with Tom - the story is told more from Mischa's pov though it does switch around a bit. Not crazy about the ending though, I think it would have been better if it had just ended (view spoiler)[before Tom's attack (hide spoiler)] . This book ended up being so sweet... So many words are coming to the front of my brain but I just can't pick one to describe how much I've enjoyed reading this book. Mishcha's and Tom's relationship is such a positive example of how a bdsm relationship should play out in real life. Reading the scenes were so spot on that I felt like I was participating. Conwy's story telling is so good that it made me want to smack Tom's ass. His ass gets smack a lot and it's so lovely. Both Tom and Mischa were very relatable charaters and their story felt real to me. That in itself speaks volumes about quality story telling. Can't wait to read more from this author. If no ones posted a warning yet, this story isn't for the fant of heart. Loaded with bdsm, enema's (fucking loved them), anal, violence, and my favorite toy, the male cock cage 😍 🤤

~May have slight spoilers.~ "To Mischa, life is simple. Doms are Doms and subs are for fucking, flogging, and bossing around. Until he meets Tom, that is. Tom is deeply offended when the stranger in the bar takes him for some kind of slave boy. Well, offended and more than a little excited by the thought of surrendering to Mischa. Mischa being Mischa, their meeting results in Tom losing his virginity in a way that's hotter than even his wildest fantasies." Mischa being Mischa, their meeting results in Tom losing his virginity in a way that's hotter than even his wildest fantasies." Above is just the first half of the book description, but I think says more than enough. I really liked this novel; through it I became very attached to both Tom and Mischa and what the out-come of their relationship would be. I found Tom to be very endearing and stubborn but just what Mischa needed; the same is to say about Mischa he was just what Tom needed, dominate, commanding, someone to push him--and also stubborn. This is my first book by C.B. Conwy and is not going to be my last, I will be buying the second Russian Bear book--soon hopefully. I will also be looking for this book in Hardcover though I bought the Ebook I think I would very much like to hold the book in my hands when I read it again, which I know I will. The only thing that would have made me like this novel more is if there had been more too it. In parts we get the 'in the passing weeks' or 'in the last couple of weeks', I would have really liked to explore those missing weeks with the two characters. Other than that though, I loved it and miss Mischa and Tom already! I think I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the M/M genre and Erotica/BDSM and is looking for an entertaining and investing read.

This is a D/s story that doesn’t take itself seriously. Mischa thinks to be a badass Dom, but he is more a big teddy bear waiting for his owner; 41 years old and independently wealthy, Mischa apparently doesn’t need anything and anyone, but he is alone. One boy, one scene, no names was always his rule until he doesn’t meet Tom. Tom is a virgin 26 years old graduate student; gay but inexperienced, but he meets Mischa by accident, he takes the chance to experiment some of his wildest fantasies; af This is a D/s story that doesn’t take itself seriously. One boy, one scene, no names was always his rule until he doesn’t meet Tom. Tom is a virgin 26 years old graduate student; gay but inexperienced, but he meets Mischa by accident, he takes the chance to experiment some of his wildest fantasies; after all Mischa, as I said, is not at all the dangerous man and Tom has the impression he will be safe with him, and so it’s. Now when I said that this story doesn’t take itself seriously, I was not implying that the BDSM side of the story is light; on the contrary, that is probably what sometime put me off. I’m not really a huge fan of the lifestyle, and more or less, I can find it intruiguing if there are not much pain/pleasure games. In A Russian Bear the pain/pleasure games are what the story is all about: Mischa likes to inflict pain on his sub, through the physical pain of the sub he receive his pleasure. Even if it’s not the “usual” pain, whips, wax or similar, it’s maybe even more intense; no blood involved, but the type of pain that goes directly to nerve endings. But if they can go in deep and itense during the scenes, they are mostly private show, to be performed inside the wall of their home, and once the scene ends, Tom and Mischa go back to be a balanced couple, where Mischa maybe is wealthier than Tom, but not for this reason he is the one in command. Tom is a perfect example of top from the bottom, he has Mischa wrapped around his little finger, and it’s even worse, since it was not even Tom’s intention, Mischa did everything by his own. There is plenty the idea that BDSM is a way to release stress, Mischa has an important and stressful job, managing big sum of money for other people, and he needs something to relax; in his less payed, but nontheless important job, also Tom needs a way to release stress: while Mischa likes to be still in command, Tom instead wants to let it go and being taken care of. I think that, even if better payed, Mischa’s job is mostly a one man show, and Mischa resents the loneliness of it; when relaxing he also needs the human contact, and more time goes, more this contact has to be personal, and a “one night stand” sub no more fit the bill. On the other hand, Tom is a College TA, people depend on him, young students seek his lead and advice; when the weekend arrives, Tom wants to let it everything goes, and being again a carefree young man who only seeks pleasure. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003ZK55WU/?...

I think the first thing that I should say is that if you are not into medium to heavy BDSM, this is not for you. I didn't not know it was going to be as heavy as it was when I started reading it. I think that I have probably read heavier but was in the right frame of mind when I did so. I wanted to read this because I was interested in the ‘love conquers all’ aspect mixed in with some kink. I was disappointed when the actual incident didn’t happen until the book was almost over and by that time everything just fell flat for me. There is a lot of sex going on but you need to know that this is a sadist / masochist relationship. I am definite not a guy but there were scenes in this that made me clutch my legs together. The actual scenes where they truly make love are ‘fade to black’ scenes where the scenes with kink were vivid. I did like this for the most part, barring some knee crossing moments, but didn’t feel that I connected fully with the characters as was intended. I think that this might have to do with my comfort level and it getting in the way all of the time. It did have all the elements that I enjoy in a book. The characters slowly fall for each other and build a relationship over time. Both are capable smart people who generally make good choices. The kink just overwhelmed me…a lot.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I really liked this book, which suprised me since I'm not usually too comfortable reading BDSM-stories. Even though this one was more kinky than I expected, I really liked it and I found Miscah's and Tom's relationship really touching. They were just right for each other. It was really hard for me to read about how they tried to deal with everything after Tom was attacked and how hard it was for both of them. I kind of hoped I could skip it and just go on, but that part was really important, since the matter had to be dealed with and the writer had to show us that everything would be okay. They would and could work it out. I think that the story ended at the right moment. They had finally climped over some major wall and they were happy, though they still had a lot of work ahead of them they knew they would be fine. I was really touched (and of course turned on) reading this book. I really enjoyed it!! It deserves more than 5 starts!! <3

I was surprised that I enjoyed this book. It was heavy reading because the BDSM was very much full of pain. However, the two MC's were so perfect together and the glimpses of the softer side of Mischa were thoroughly enjoyable. Like others I didn't care for the abrupt ending, however I know there's a sequel so I'll definitely pick that up to see where the couple goes. Yes, I know it's the prequel to Alphabet Soup but I loved that one so much that I had to go back to the beginning and refill my cup with Mischa and Tom. Love these guys! And yes, please read the sequel if you haven't already. It picks up just where this leaves off and it's wonderful.

Not for the faint of heart. This book treads on the heavier side of BDSM and the first half of the book is mostly sex, sex and more sex with oodles of pain. Each sexual encounter between Mischa and Tom goes a little further into the BDSM world. Some of the scenes were quite intense and I found it fascinating to read. I wasn't bored at all. Past the halfway mark, I was pleased to see a plot finally emerging from the string of multiple encounters between Mischa and Tom. (view spoiler)[ Mischa and Tom Not for the faint of heart. There's a definite sense of a "To be continued" to the book. I'm definitely willing to read on to see how Mischa and Tom fare though.

Somebody please tell me why I waited so long to read this book...oh yes, wait I remember, I wasn't quite as kinky then as I am now *grin* I loved this book! There is a great and lasting relationship being built, with all the ups and downs that it involves. The pain and the kink is a fantastic bonus, lol, but not the be all and end all of this book. And that is why it is going on my favourite lists and I'll be reading it again in the near future.
