Reviewing Black Hammer #1-13. Smallville superheroes meets Twin Peaks. This is a somewhat of a metafictional take of an event comic/crisis aftermath. In some ways, this comic is a refutation of the concept of "Superhero comics can never change--they always revert back to the status quo". Imagine a universe where heroes (with a significant canon and continuity) are allowed to die (and stay dead), to grow old---and have consistent characterization due to the input of primarily one creative team (Lemir and Orstrom). This would have been the perfect superhero book for me, 10 years ago when I first started, but unfortunately with the grand corporate narratives, IP Incubation and monoculture that superheroes now represent, its a little to late for me.

One of the best monthly comics still! Jeff Lemire’s ability to craft a well told Story is more evident in this issue as we learn of all the characters past and connect with them on an emotional level. Fantastic art continues to grace the pages, and an intriguing plot!

Really picked up the pace from the last issue. The build up to whatever is going to happen is certainly very good, lets just hope that the event itself is of the same quality of the rest of the series.
