Bruce travelled as an itinerate preacher amongst the Aboriginal camps along the bank of the River Murray as it meandered through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Bruce faced many life threatening situations. He observed, ‘Fear is a warning system that God has built into us. We can walk in faith and still have the daylights scared out of us. A man is a fool if he is not careful.’ That fact that Bruce is alive today is evidence that he exercised care even though trembling within. As an ordained Pastor, Bruce continued to work from an open toolbox as a Jack-of-all-Trades. His motto was to reach the man in the street just as his Biblical counterpart Paul did in New Testament times.

As a young man Bruce was rather a maverick [like a wild horse] - a purposeless, unruly-at-times individual who could easily have chosen the wrong path in life. Circumstance and a burgeoning faith brought him to the Bible-studies group held weekly by the Christian Revival Crusade, where he relates how he fell in love with and eventually married his wife Gwenneth. Inspired and commissioned by a visiting evangelist, the couple, with their fellow-students Frank and Sylvia Groetz, take upon themselves to continue the mission to Aboriginal camps across the Riverland area of Australia. The Roundup of the title refers to the gathering of new, once-wild souls to God through the message and example of Christian life and Love. Although not for everyone this book is far from dry and 'preachy'. Gwenneth and Bruce are witty and egregious, always willing to poke fun at themselves and admit the path to faith is not usually a straight one - although it's a path to enlightenment for those willing to hear and heed the call. A very thought-inspiring story of true Faith and friendship.
