But Elisa is also betrothed to a cruel older man named Sir John Garingham. When Sir John dies after falling from a window following the murder of a priest by her wastrel father Anthony, it looks like a simple case of death by misadventure. However, suddenly Elisa finds herself in the dock after apparently admitting to pushing her husband to his death on their wedding night, and she is sent to the notorious Holloway Prison to await her trial. There she is terrorised by the vindictive Matron who is set on destroying her spirit. Who is there left to save the virtue of the generous-hearted Elisa? And will Elisa show she really can act when her life depends on it? Christina Britton Conroy’s heart-rending Beauty’s Doom continues to chart the roller-coaster fortunes of Elisa aka Elly as she exchanges the drama of the stage for that of a prison cell and the courtroom in the fourth book of His Majesty’s Theatre series.

Just when Elly has escaped being married to her despicable fiance (who wants her only for her inheritance) and begun to rise up again in her Edwardian theater with her other charming apprentices, she is arrested for the fiance's murder. The scenes of her imprisonment and trial as lawyers and friends fight for her life are truly gripping. Up very late finishing this one! A marvelous series for lovers of the Edwardian period.
