Backstory is given by the author, but there is an underlying, interconnected conflict running throughout all the books, which is developed and slowly resolved as the series progresses. For this reason, this reviewer does NOT recommend the books of this series as standalones. To avoid possible spoilers, it is also recommended that the books be read sequentially. Wow! Wow! Wow! Fabulous addition to the series and riveting continuation of the story as our teenage Dust accepts his destiny and becomes a remarkable young man! I know The Dust Series is technically categorized as a teen/young adult post-apocalyptic science fiction saga, but it's really an extraordinary adventure suitable for any age. Two of the things I love most about Smith's work is the fact that her writing crosses multiple genres and appeals to readers of all ages. Yes, some of her books are incredibly sexy, but Dust is a sweet, coming of age story filled to the brim with danger, drama, action, adventure, suspense, intrigue, and blossoming young love. I've been a fan of S.E. Smith's work for years and devour everything she writes. Smith is a truly gifted storyteller and master wordslinger with exceptional world building and character development skills. I never tire of her all-consuming storylines, unique worlds, and vividly depicted characters, but the Dust Series may be my new favorite. But I digress, let's talk about Dust. Dust: A New World Order is an intelligent, imaginative, well-researched, well-crafted, fast-paced, easy-to-follow, full-length novel with no sex but does contain a sweet blossoming love story for coming of age young adults and some instances of violence. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with multiple perspectives. The dialogue is smart, well executed and flows effortlessly. Usually, it's fairly obvious whether a story is character or plot driven but in Dust, it's pretty much a toss-up. I loved the premise, plot, and conflict Smith developed for this series, but it's the incredible cast of engaging, well-developed characters that captured my heart. They literally explode from the pages, demand your attention, and hold you prisoner from the first page till the last. I was immediately smitten with the two protagonists: a courageous, kindhearted fifteen-year-old (but now sixteen) hero named Dust and a feisty, resourceful sixteen-year-old (probably seventeen by now) heroine named Sammy. The story chronicles a group of survivors struggling to live on a post-apocalyptic world after fragments of a comet destroy most of Earth and its residents. Only a small percentage of the population lived, but those who did manage to survive the initial blast and deadly radiation are now facing anarchy, danger, deplorable conditions, as well as hunger, and some have even been altered in varying degrees. Dust has undergone a surprising and somewhat frightening change which has given him certain powers, but Dust is not the only one who has changed. The ill effects of the radiation has affected more than just the humans of the world. In Book One, Dust: Before and After, a dangerous new enemy rose from the destruction whose powers also grew and, like Dust, continues to evolve. Dust's parents were killed, leaving him alone, confused, and afraid. After barely surviving his lonely existence for almost a year, he ventures away from his home and meets the lovely and very resourceful sixteen-year-old Sammy and her seven-year-old younger brother Todd, who also have no other family. But sometimes family can be more than just blood. Sometimes, it's the people we choose and Dust, Sammy, and Todd decide to choose each other. The three team up and embark on a danger-filled journey of life and death. In Book Two, Dust: A New World Order, Dust, Sammy, and Todd travel across the country to Portland, Oregon in search of Dust's aunt and uncle. Our young heroes meet more survivors, some who become friends and some who become treacherous enemies. Nevertheless, they bravely continue on their way to Portland, struggling to avoid old enemies while trying to evade new ones. But all too soon the lines between friends and foes become blurred. New friends turn into dangerous deceivers, interested only in their destruction, while old adversaries become potential friends. Dust's new abilities continue to evolve but come at great cost and sacrifice. Once again, it will take more than just good intentions and hope for Dust, Sammy, and Todd to survive. It will require keen intelligence, skill, determination and most of all, loyalty to each other in order for them to defeat the mysterious new dangers stalking their every move. Can these three young innocents and their friends maneuver through this new world maze of deceit, death, and destruction to find a way to survive and somehow defeat their enemies? We'll see! No spoilers from me but I will say this....Handsome, courageous teenage hero-check! smart, resourceful teenage heroine-check! A sweet blossoming romance-check! A large cast of fascinating characters-check! Dangerous, malevolent enemies and plot twists galore-check! Heart-pounding action, gripping adventure, spine-tingling suspense and heart-stopping danger at every turn-check! That and a whole lot more! Did I like this story? No, I LOVED it! It's bloody brilliant! I was simply in awe of the adaptability of this courageous trio of young heroes. It just warmed my heart. Would I recommend this book? You bet and I am for ages 12 to 112! Will I read this author again? Absolutely, just as soon as she releases her next book! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! I laughed, I cried and shook my fists in anger, but by the end, I was happy, satisfied and well entertained. I was glued to my chair, white-knuckling my ereader, my heart fluttering wildly and gasping for breath as the pages flew as quickly as the time. Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

I know that this series is young adult but I am really liking it. I like everything that S.E. Smith writes and tend to read all of her books at least once but usually twice a year. I feel that I need to keep everything fresh in mind in preparation for whichever book comes next. There are several surprises in this second book. There are also more survivors, some that I like and some that I don't. Forget what you might have thought about the cause of the Changed. S.E. Smith I was taken in and amazed by Dust last year. But I have been blown away by Dust: A New World Order (Dust #2). Blown away!!! I could not put this book down and admit I laughed, cried, yelled "NO!" and held my breath only to release it again. A must read for anyone. Characters I hated, I fell in love with and vice versa. Action packed full of twist and turns.
