Needing a hit record sooner than later, his manager suggests up-and-coming singer/songwriter Jauri Tutuola. He jumps at the chance thinking she will be an easy ride to the top of the charts, but what he doesn't anticipate is her taking him on the most thrilling tour of his life as she makes him confront his past and make room for her on his stage and in his future. Surrounded by a music industry full of clones, Jauri “JT” Tutuola wants to break new ground and do things her way. She vows to no longer let anything keep her from the spotlight, especially not her deeply melanated skin, her bushy hair or her “creative genius” label head. She initially dismisses Orrin as just another distraction until he begins to show her that making music and making love don't have to be mutually exclusive. The Soundtrack Series follows Jauri and Orrin, two star-crossed lovers determined not to let anything thwart their attempts at staying on beat even though their jam session has many interruptions over a span of fifteen years.

I was already a fan of Tanzania Glover, but this book just moved her up on my list of dope Black women writers. In Music to My Ears, she wrote characters that I love to hate and with her talent, she still managed to make me feel bad for them and root for them, all on the same page. These characters, though living a lifestyle that is so different from my own, still had experiences that were so realistic and relatable, I felt like she might have pulled scenes directly from my memory to write them. In Orrin, I saw a man I've run into over and over again in my dating life, when I was determined to make the bad boy love me and only me. In Jauri, I saw myself, ten years ago. Working like I had something to prove to anyone but myself. The ending was incredibly satisfying to me, and I may be in the minority with that, but it completed the story perfectly. I am excited to read the next book in this series! Keep up the good work, Tanzania!

I loved how this story brought up the topics of colorism, featurism, self-esteem, plastic surgery, childhood trauma, grief, superficiality, drug abuse, alcoholism, fame, love, the entertainment industry and so many more deep topics in a relatable way. There was never a dull moment in this story. Orrin was a troubled man but when he was in love he loved hard. His napoleon complex and hate at first sight with JT was everything! Orrin's issues weren't fully exposed but he gave me child star with major issues vibes every time he made a mistake or when a chick he slept with popped up. Normally I get upset when the main characters don't get their happily every after with this well written story I was very satisfied with how the story ended. I really sympathized with all of the women Orrin dogged, Janelle and August. I liked the last part of the story and how Jauri didn't only blame Orrin for the fall out but she owned up to her own mistakes and the red flags that she completely ignored. I also liked how Jauri was so talented and still needed work. Jauri wasn't perfect but she was a good girl that deserved to be chosen and appreciated. I hope Jauri gets her win in the next installment!

Jauri is a strong woman and she is only human and to give Orrin a chance and for him to let his insecurities mess up a potential lifetime relationship is crazy. Then you have a woman like August that settles being a second and third option. It's hard to love someone that don't love themselves. Loyalty, love, betrayal and laughs were all in this book. Every writer do not deliver a great book, but this one here is 5 stars all the way. Tanzania thank you!!

Well, this was a doozy--a very entertaining doozy, but a doozy nonetheless. We see her finagle her way through the industry politics and extraneous bullshit while trying to get her first album debuted. Along the way, she comes across veteran singer and former boybander Orrin Greenwood and romantic roller coaster of a relationship ensues. Jauri: I really took to Jauri. Despite the nonsense she dealt with, both personally and professionally, she handled herself pretty well. Sis has a spine of steel and I admired that. There's something about a heroine that makes a mess, cleans it up, and learns from it that really speaks to me. Orrin: Now this mfer here...listen, if I knew this fool in real life, I would've beat his ass many, many times over. (view spoiler)[It's why I don't particularly blame Jauri for nearly knocking his black ass off the damn balcony. (hide spoiler)] Though Jauri repeatedly called him a fuckboy throughout the story, I don't think that's a strong enough word for this idiot. It was nothing but a never-ending conga line of bullshit with this dude. I mean, yeah, I get it: he was a child star that dealt with some heavy bullshit in his career and only really began to deal with it once Jauri came into his life. But after a certain point, the trauma excuse only goes so far and only explains so much. This fool just ain't shit. But damn if his fuckery didn't make for some good reading. Overall:This story was one hell of a ride and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I liked the real celebs that the story celebs were named after and I loved that there was actual soundtrack that accompanied the events of the book. The supporting cast was fun and added a great backdrop to the foolishness that was Jauri and Orrin's relationship. I'm really looking forward to more of this mess. 5 stars.

Wonderful!! I loved this book and the play on real life celebrities (Dre aka Drake, Raven aka Rihanna, Bianca King and her husband Jax aka Beyoncé and Jay Z...etc) this book was loooong but so interesting I found myself stuck reading it. Orrin...my God!! He was so aggy lol. I really felt like he had ultimate male ego like, he was sooooo trash!! Jauri is a character that I definitely see as myself. In fact there was a point in my life where I wanted to write music but felt it was too much pressure Wonderful!! AMAZING This cannot be this author’s first book...it was amazingly written! The character development and storyline was extremely engaging...kept me interested the entire time. They were so beautifully flawed. I could not put it down even when I got sleepy. I am eagerly anticipating side B!!!

Truly Impressed For this to be the author’s first novel, I’m truly impressed! This book took me through soo many emotions with Jauri and Orrin! Lol As a lover of music and Chicago, I was in heaven. And since I’m a hopeless romantic, I’ll be looking out for the B-side!

Full disclosure: this is my best friend’s book and she dedicated it to me so no she’s not getting anything below five stars! Seriously though this isn’t even the type of book that I read.
