This was like a shiny new toy to me, it was a whole new take on shifters and their animal counterparts (is that the right word?) "It's mine now. As are you." His focus lingered on her mouth before dropping to the swell of her breasts." He obviously also has a short attention span when it comes to Lucy's body." I can't wait to see who's next in this series, I really loved the new outlook on embracing and being one with the animal inside you.

I can’t wait to read the next book. Opening Scene: Penang, Malaysia 554 days since the first outbreak of the Red Death I can’t let her die alone. The Review: Delve into a world steeped in tradition and superstition. After her parents died from the Red Death, Lucy Yeoh flees to Malaysia seeking answers. Being closed off from the rest of the world Malaysia is like a Paradise to Lucy, from the beautiful tropical climate to her stunningly sexy neighbor, Sheng. Only thing is he might be delusional, or crazy. Sheng, claims the Plague God unleashed the Red Death, and only a circle of Zodiac spirit animals can cleanse the plague from the world. He believes he’s the Tiger, and she’s the Rabbit, long furry ears and cute fluffy tail included. Li Sheng is the Chosen of the Tiger, and it’s his burden to restore balance to the world. He must gather the Chosen and secure their allegiance. He’s waited a long time for the Dragon to arrive; only to realize it’s the Rabbit spirit who has chose Lucy, not his anticipated partner the Dragon. The Rabbit is the weakest link in the Zodiac spirits, and Lucy is a temptation he could do without. Sheng can’t dismiss her, and the Rabbit proves to being uncooperative. His desire for her becomes unbearable and all he wants is Lucy. Sheng’s enemies close in, and not all of them want Lucy alive. Together they must learn to trust one another and fight side by side. Working together they must navigate a treacherous world where their hearts and duty are on opposite sides of the lines. And they must choose whether to sacrifice their burgeoning love to save the world, or find away to surrender to both. Notable Scene: The fluttering in her stomach spiked and then sank lower as he continued to stare at her, unspeaking. “I’m Lucy,” she tried in Mandarin, since maybe he didn’t speak English. “I just arrived from America. This is my uncle’s condominium.” The words rambled out of her before she slammed her mouth shut. Next, she’d be telling him about the private jet’s food and what movie she’d watched. Witch on that censor, Luce. He might not be a nut job but, by now, he likely concluded she was one. Especially since she continued to gawk at his muscular body. “Um, what’s your name? Should I go? I should probably go, right?” Pivoting, she winced at the desperate tone of her voice. It’d been so long since she’d chatted with anyone, and this new freedom was…even lonelier. “Don’t leave.” The smooth, sexy, accented voice stopped her retreat. A command? Sure sounded like one. Despite the stiffening in her muscles, she obeyed. She swiveled around, her eyes widening as the man rose with effortless, smooth grace, mimicking the tiger on his back. He kept on rising, stretching at least six and a half feet tall, his body so much bigger than what she’d pictured at first. Her foot inched backward. High, youthful cheekbones accented a robust, square jaw, obscuring her ability to tell if he was in his twenties or forties. His irises weren’t brown, but a deep, jet black, matching his straight hair. Longer pieces slashed across his eyes, and she curled her fingers into her palms to combat the urge to brush aside those locks. Ms. Slate has built a complex world, detailed with an strong solid plot. The characters are amazing be it the primary or secondary characters. I'm also proud to announce that Ms. Slate certainly has done her research. Some authors tend to skip it and then it isn't really authentic. Although a lot of Chinese words were used it was hard to follow. Ying Yang represents the primal opposing but complementary forces found in all things in the universe. Depicted as it is, it also outlines the necessity of balance in all things. There is more to the Red Death that meets the eye. The Chinese Zodiac Signs are to bring that is unbalanced back to being balanced. There is a council of Elders who want to see what way the scales will tip. There is the Matchmaker, the Empress and the Hai San (good guys) and the Ghee Hin their enemy. Lucy Yeoh lived in California until the Red Death spread through the world and killed a third of the population. It is called that as the red tears are cried at their last moment. Both Lucy's parents died although it isn't that simple. She gets sent to her fathers brother in Malaysia. She is picked up at the airport to meet with her Uncle. The Driver is exactly honest about his intentions. Li Sheng has the Tiger Spirit and is the leader of the Hai San Kongsi (Clan) so far for the good of the cause he has recruited the monkey, the ox and the rat. The Ghee Hin have the snake and the boar. Sheng has been waiting a long time for the dragon to arrive back to him to help in the cause. He thinks that Lucy has the Dragon Spirit but she is just the rabbit. But even the rabbit has it's strength. Lucy and Li Sheng's characters develop throughout the book individually as well as when they come together. They have good chemistry and banter with one another. I guessed one Thing but to be honest in the Grand sceme of things that doesn't matter because there were so many twists and turns to the plot. I could have never guessed the ending. This book is based on one couple and the next book will be based on a different couple. Each couple has their HFN.

This love story is one of teacher, trainer and eventually a fabulous lover. Honestly, I can't wait for the next book in the series, which thankfully comes out this year! There is a lot going on and I have to say that this is a very different take on shifters )if they are actually shifters). I really liked the Asian background and all the descriptions, it was like I was there. The story has a lot of action and some awesome fights, you won''t be bored for one second. And the romance part in the story was perfect! It was not a rushed, fall in love right away (insta-love) kind of thing, it was at a good pace, didn't feel slow, just right. I also have to say that all the characters were super cool and likable and I fell in love with quite a few and cannot wait to see if we will have more stories with some of them as main characters. Lucy was the perfect heroine, she was not a weak character even though she didn't quite have the strongest of the animals. I really liked the descriptions of the transformations, the author takes you into the mind of the character and shows you what they can see and what is happening to them while they are changing, it was really cool. This is really an awesome story and I will definitely recommend to all my friends.

However, his plans come adrift when he realises that Lucy carries not the Dragon but the...rabbit! Sheng make a great alpha. It is so nice to have a hero who does not fit the stereotypical hero/shifter mould. He is alpha to the core, but carried a sense of vulnerability and a sparking sense of humour. Lucy, to timid and submissive, but with an inner core of strength that even she does not reckon she possesses. When they join forces they become an unique and well balances force of nature, one that I totally fell in love with. The characters are well fleshed out, revealing themselves as the story develops the same as one person reveals themselves to a new acquaintance. Though the revelation of the Zodiac Spirits they harbor is a bit more than one could expect in the 'real world'. The interaction between the Spirits and their hosts is as fascinating as that of the human characters with each other. The balance that must be struck, the trust and commitment necessary for the two to coexist is explored and explained in such a way that you find yourself merely accepting that this is simply the way things are. And, at times, forgetting that this is only true in good books such as this and not every day life. This author's debut novel, I for one will be anxiously watching for more from her in the future, more in the Chinese Zodiac Romance series in particular, but any others she might decide to write as well.

My favorite part of this book was the fabulous originality of the storyline. Not only was it set in a location that is uncommon for romance novels, but the idea of using the Chinese Zodiac was brilliant. I love shifter stories and all things paranormal, so I knew it would be up my alley, but I was drawn in immediately by how richly the author detailed the settings and by how sensually she set up the meeting between Lucy and Sheng. Their love story was hot and intense, yet it was believable. Char My favorite part of this book was the fabulous originality of the storyline. What drew me to this in the first place was this whole concept of Chinese Zodiacs. And Chinese mythologies have always intrigued me. And so I was really impressed with the theme that this author came up with. It was like a really nice change from your usual mainstream supernatural elements. Now we come to the plot. I do feel that this book had much more potential to be able to deliver a nice plot with the theme it possessed. I had been expecting a better story but the plot was sadly lacking to me. It wasn't as though it wasn't engaging but just wasn't satisfying. Same was with the characters. Throughout the book I didn't feel any special affection for any of the characters. They just existed. As in I liked them but I couldn't fall in love with any of them and that's just sad because I really look forward to falling in love with characters. Then obviously the sex. I obviously knew there was going to be a lot sex in the book and it won't disappoint you so if you're in for a steamy ride you can dive into this book with eyes closed. But you know all this sizzling attraction was a tad bit, I don't know..unrealistic. I mean, you know your those werewolf books where the characters get all hot and horny just by looking at their mate for the first time..? It was like that except for the warewolf bit. I don't really think it's possible to get all wet and hard just after two seconds into the conversation. Is it? Not that I would know, now. But it's not as if I am really complaining because I've got to admit the book was hot. And considering it was my first book of this year I decided to give it extra half a star, you know just to a nice start; even if the book wasn't really all that great, it wasn't all that bad either. :)

Steeped in the rich mythology of the Chinese zodiac, this unique tale of magic and love carries undertones of a unique dystopian world. I recommend it for fans of paranormal and steamy romance.

I got the book from the author and Paranormal Romance & Authors That Rock in exchange for an honest review. Trancing the Tiger is the first book in the Chinese Zodiac Romance series. I am happy to announce that Rachael Slate confirmed that she will be releasing two more books of the series this year! I guess that just by that comment you can guess what my opinion about the book is but I will say it anyway: I LOVE TRANCING THE TIGER! :) Trancing the tiger is a story about a millenary fight between good and evil. The spirit of the Chinese zodiac animals have been granted by the Jade emperor to worthy hosts, pure souls that will join the other each other in order to fight demons and other evil spirits that are causing harm to the humanity. The whole story is being told by our two main characters: Lucy and Sheng. Our heroine, Lucy knows nothing about this mythical side of the world and even less that her family is much more entwined with it than she wishes but after The Red Death, a horrible disease that takes the life of thousands of persons, leaves her an orphan her whole reality is changed in the blink of an eye. Since her first day in her new home, she is being pursued not only by Sheng, a sexy and intimidating man who also happens to be her neighbor, but also by a gang of mysterious men because they believe she host the strongest of the zodiac spirits. Sheng has been the host of the tiger for years. In the absence of the dragon, he is responsible of finding and gaining the alliance of the rest of the host in order to complete the cycle and finish with the Plague God, the spirit that unleashed the Red Death. When Lucy arrived to Malaysia, he expected to find his biggest ally, the one to whom he could transfer the leadership of his allies. What he didn’t expect was that the dragon turned out to be the rabbit, the kindest and most docile animal in the zodiac. He was pretty disappointed since the tiny beast wouldn’t help him in battle but he will learn that life is full of surprises. My favorite character was Sheng. I loved that possessive, overprotective and passionate attitude of his. I am not afraid to admit that I melt every time he kissed Lucy. She is one lucky girl! But there were times when I wanted to shout at him to be man enough to admit his feelings and stop fighting them because she is a host. I also wanted to scold him for underestimating Lucy just because she is a rabbit. Who said that a small animal couldn’t be useful? She is an intelligent and cunning young woman that gained the interest, respect and love of pretty much everyone that meets her.Lucy is an amazing character too. After everything she has been through, she does her best to be understanding, strong and reliable to the people in her life. She has a hard time accepting that she is a host and things get even worst when she realizes that her father might have hidden much more than the fact that a zodiac spirit lives within her. I would really love to share my favorite part of the novel with you all but it would be a huge spoiler. I will just tell you that it has to do with Sheng acting all overprotective with Lucy. Also, I want to warn you all that not only do this book is a total page-turner but also has a minor cliffhanger. However, I assure you that it won’t stop you from enjoying the story.

There are a few, exceptional traits that I loved about this book. The first one is of course how invigorating this book is when I compared it to other shapeshifting novels. If you are a reader of this genre, this is one book that you have to add to your list of books to read this new year as it is sexy, adventurous and sinfully addicting! Another win about this book was the chosen writing flow of the author. From the first page to the very last I felt like I had been swept away into a new, exciting conquest that I hadn't experienced before. So as if it is not already apparent I loved how Slate penned this book! Overall this book has something for both romance and paranormal readers alike. I'm hugely impressed by Slate's debut and I will continue to watch this author grow as Slate is certainly one to watch!

Lucy is one of those people who will go to the bitter end to get the answers needed and make things right. She is someone you want behind you and Sheng is oh so Alpha- very lickable and oh so yummy. Together they make a great couple who work together to seek the answers. Lucy needs the answers or she might loose something she has come to love very much. I couldn’t put this story down. The author has a great storyline and it is unique using the Chinese Zodiac spirit animals. All the characters in the story kept me glued to the pages and I needed to know everything so kudos to the author for making me stay awake until I read until into early morning hours :-) I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Slate and I have to say, since this is her debut story, I cannot wait to read more from her, in this story’s world. The characters have me hooked . They need to have more of their story told. My rating: 5 stars *****

This story is crazy! And amazing! I actually don’t read much romance (unless you count chick-lit, but then the love story is only about 50% of the story) and I’ve never read any fantasy stuff, so Trancing The Tiger was a whole new world for me. I loved the overall vibe, which oozed passion in a dark Asian setting. I found the descriptions seductive and imaginative, and from a technical perspective, the writing was exceptional, especially considering that the author is independent. All the characters had well defined and distinct personalities. I don’t normally go for tough heroes, but Sheng really appealed to me. And Lucy was easy to relate to as well. I’m not sure if I’m a complete convert to the genre (I prefer quick light-hearted reads) but this book definitely kept me intrigued until the last page. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of sizzling romance in a fantasy setting.

Let me say this is not my usual type of book, and I was a little worried when I received the ARC of this book that I wouldn't like it. I couldn't be more wrong. Not only is it a story of love, but also mystery...and it gives insight into another culture and their beliefs. Love Sheng and Lucy's story and can't wait for the next one in the series. Great job Rachael!

I am not what you call the "typical" romance novel reader as I tend to read books on design and technology. This year I committed to branching out of my reading comfort zone and what better than to read Chinese Zodiac Romance? I have to admit that I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to others. The story is compelling and the pace is good. Also, I liked the interspersion of zodiac mythos without falling on a long, rambling monologue. Also, I liked the interspersion of zodiac mythos without falling on a long, rambling monologue. I was also glad to see that Lucy (the main character, Rabbit) was not relegated to "damsel in distress" tropes but easily held her own. The characters were very much fallible to their own thoughts vs. images of perfection. It shows the author is confident in her writing to not fall into the Hollywood tropes of women and the male character (Tiger) even questions his own thinking and controlling himself. I hadn't read "romance" before so there were a few times when I was like "wait, what the...?" but I felt that it was genuine and not some hyper-stylized view of sexuality/romance, but was portrayed in a real way that I (being male) thought "yeah, I have felt that way too Mr. Tiger". So overall, I rate this book very highly. The author did a great job and established a high bar for me for romance books.

I loved this book. I have always reached for fantasy romances, and Ms. Slate did not disappoint. She created a vivid world facing a pandemic. The feisty heroine uncovers her destiny alongside a hero who is simultaneously larger than life and vulnerable. Lots of hot sex, but none of it gratuitous. I was pulled toward the HEA, which was believable and satisfying. I'm glad books 2 and 3 in this Chinese Zodiac series will be released in 2015.

Trancing the Tiger is a great read and a definite page turner. A unique story that's based on chinese zodiacs with clever twists and strong, sexy chemistry between Lucy and Sheng. This book does a great job with the world building aspects as well as character development. Looking forward to the rest of this series. Definitely an author to watch!

Rated 5+ Stars One of the most fascinating and engaging PNR’s I’ve ever read. I believe it’s best known for its originality. The story takes place in Malaysia. It’s well steeped in Asian traditions, the supernatural & vivid descriptions of area surroundings (temples, gardens, sculptures, etc.). It included hosting zodiac animal spirits (like shifters, in a sense), serious suspense, undertones of dystopia, real friendship, good vs. evil, an abundance of loyalty, action-packed scenes, and heavy stea Rated 5+ Stars One of the most fascinating and engaging PNR’s I’ve ever read. First things first: What a great book Trancing the Tiger is!!! I love PNR books, but strictly speaking, this one doesn't belong to the genre; it is more of a plunge into oriental myth and tradition, a journey into the mysteries of sexual attraction, a study in the univesal struggle for power. I'm impressed by this new author's debut novel for its flawless plot and totally captivating characters; both the good and the bad guys are well portrayed and feel 'natural' in their diverse roles. Which is another of Ms. Slate's many writing talents. The story starts on a sad note, but soon develops into a mesmerizing experience for both characters and readers. You cannot help but love Lucy Yeoh, as much as you cannot but feel attracted by Sheng Li. I so enjoyed the arm-wrestling contest between them, it is a perfect build-up to their explosive, highly sexual relationship. The skilful addition of the Chinese Zodiac spirit animal mythology makes their bonding together much more meaningful to them as a couple, and to the world too. The sequence of events is well planned-out and it flows so seamlessly that Trancing the Tiger is a truly impossible-to-put-down novel, leaving you wanting for more. I sure want more!! A Chinese Zodiac Series comprises also By the Horns and Reining Him In books, both coming in 2015. Goes without saying, I can't wait for the next books to be released.
