There are parts of this story I really enjoyed but there were also parts that I didn't. Most of you who have read my reviews know that I have a really difficult time with man-whores (which the hero had been) especially if they are still up to no good once the hero meets his heroine or they begin a relationship. It isn't until we're close to the end that we learn the truth about this situation so for me, I would have enjoyed this book so much more had I know the truth from the get go or at least in the first 25%. It gave me a sour taste in my mouth when we kept hearing about his son by an old girlfriend. Other than those problems it was a pretty fair story and the ending I loved. It did seem to drag along in places causing me to lose my focus. It is questionable as to whether I would recommend this book. I will honestly say that I wouldn't read it again.

Compared to the last few books that I've read by this author, I have to say this was a pleasant surprise. I liked the book a lot. It is a must read. Raffa and Chloe's fathers --one an Arabian King, the other a Greek Tycoon-- had been best friends for years and they wanted that their children marry. The two had never seen each other before. It was duty and his own preference for an emotionless marriage --having seen how love caused hurt and destruction-- that made Raffa agree to the marriage. Twen Compared to the last few books that I've read by this author, I have to say this was a pleasant surprise. Twenty-two year old Chole had two reasons for agreeing to the marriage -- one, she loved Raffa's father, Mallik, who had been more of a father to her than her own father, and second, she wanted to be accepted by her Greek father whom she loved but who always kept her at a distance. Her parents had been divorced when she was five and had gone to live with her American mother. She was hoping by fulfilling this wish of his she'd be accepted by him. Surprisingly, there seem to be not even an iota of attraction between Raffa and Chloe and their marriage like the blurb says was a cold one. Few months into the marriage, Chloe took off to the city and concentrated on doing charity work for the kingdom, which again I found surprising considering the marriage was to make Mallik happy. I didn't get how she'd achieve that by living separately from her husband. Nevertheless, now, six months later, she's been called to the palace by Raffa because his father has cancer and slowly dying and he wants that the two of them work on providing an heir to the throne, so that his father at least leaves the world knowing that there's an heir on the way. Besides, there was a half-brother Raffa hated, who intends creating trouble for Raffa in his claim for the throne. Knowing how much she loves his father, he threatens to divorce her and marry someone else who is willing to provide him with a heir and she caves in to that threat because she knew their divorce would lead to Mallik to an early death. I felt Raffa very cold at the beginning. I especially didn't like the way he spoke to Chloe or his aloof behavior with the twelve year old boy, Amit, who is supposedly his son from a broken love-affair. Whereas Chloe, considering all that she's gone through with her father, she has now decided not to let anyone dictate to her starting with her husband, who is used to issuing commands and having them instantly met. She demands a separate suite of rooms for herself and tells him he needs to take prior permission if he needed to see her. The author may have been trying to portray Chloe as independent and spirited, which she was, but at times her behavior also came across as impulsive and contradictory to me, especially pertaining to her love for Raffa's father. He was only used as a catalyst for them to marry the first time, then second time to consummate their marriage then conveniently forgotten. Except for the beginning scene where Chloe tells Raffa she was with his father and that one scene later in the marriage when Mallik gets a heart attack, there was no other interaction between the two. I understand both Raffa and Chloe were afraid to let their emotions get involved lest they get hurt, but I didn't like the cool detachment between the two with him visiting her for few hours at night for sex or they making appointments through their personal staff whenever they wanted to see each other instead of direct approach and it carried on till the end, even after they'd warmed up to each other. This maybe the modern way of romance, but it didn't sit well with an old-fashioned romantic like me, who likes warmth, a touchy-cuddly feel between the MCs and invading each other's space while they're married or getting to know each other. Especially, when the two of them had a such powerful chemistry. Having said that, the sex was steamy and passionate. Moreover, Raffa started making attempts to spend time with her taking her to places in the Kingdom that he knew she'd love and they begin to share secrets and stuff about themselves with one another. A month into the phase II of their marriage, Chloe is upset to find she's not pregnant. Raffa tries to make her see the point that it could take time, but she doesn't listen and to hide her grief she takes off to the city for a week. She returns with a renewed belief that it'll happen and until then she'll enjoy every moment she has with Raffa. He too, is beginning to worry that the closeness that they've developed may vanish once she's pregnant, which is why he's not too excited about her getting pregnant. Then, when at a function, seeing his half-brother getting friendly with Chloe, Raffa is seized by jealousy and possessiveness. And, he realizes she's getting under his skin. (view spoiler)[Meanwhile six-months later when she still doesn't conceive, Chloe decides to discreetly have herself checked only to find out that its very unlikely that she'll conceive, leave alone carry a baby to its full term. She's terribly heartbroken by the news. I could feel her pain there. Moreover, she's fallen in love with Raffa. Unable to tell him, the truth she leaves him. My favorite part of the book was when Raffa calls her and tells her to come back. “Chloe, that’s fine,” he said, gruffly, wishing he’d had the foresight to discuss this with her before that moment. “So it’s taking a while to conceive. This doesn’t matter, habibte. You do not need to run away month after month. It will happen for us – and that baby will be the heir I need.” Silence met his pronouncement, so he continued. “You’re upset, and I understand that. You expected we would conceive before now.” He swept his eyes shut, hating himself for being relieved when they hadn’t. Hating himself for being so selfish that he’d actually relished the prospect of another month of trying. “But it’s only been six months. Soon, Chloe, we will have success.” Her sob was so faint he thought he’d imagined it, but no! He knew all her sounds, all her soft, gentle noises. “What is it?” He softened his own tone, taking a step closer to the window and pressing his forehead against it. “Have you changed your mind? You don’t want a child now? You’re not ready?” She was young. Too young for the responsibilities he’d thrust on her shoulders. “It’s not…” her voice, God! It was tortured. He ached to pull her into his arms. Hearing her grief and knowing he couldn’t comfort her, it was his own form of agony. She seemed to shake herself, for when she spoke again, it was with more steel and resolution. “We’ll divorce swiftly; I want nothing from you except my freedom. That will leave you able to marry someone else and continue … with … begetting an heir,” she finished unevenly. Raffa wanted to growl, he wanted to shout until the palace shook. He wanted to shake someone, something, punch a wall, anything! How could she possibly be thinking these things? Let alone saying them? “Do you think you are so easily replaced?” Once again, in her grief and impulsiveness, she completely forgot about the dying man the very reason she'd agreed to resume her marriage. In the bargain she didn't even get to say goodbye to him when he died. (hide spoiler)] Nevertheless, I was moved by their conversation, could feel Chloe's pain and was floored by Raffa's words “Do you think you are so easily replaced?” I loved the angst that follows and also how things progressed from there on. The epilogue was awesome too. Overall, it was a nice, angsty read. The next book in the series is about Raffa's close friend, Apollo, who happens to be Chloe's older half-brother, who has also always kept her at a distance like their father. So, looking forward to reading it.

4.5 stars ⭐️ I enjoyed this one. The backdrop and setting of the culture and legends regarding the country was very well done as usual. Raffa and Chloe was one power packed couple. I loved how she always defied him and matched him for word for word. I also loved how he wasn’t shy to apologize when heroine called out on his actions. The palace, the secondary characters, their shared past regrets all give the story more spice. This one was particularly high on angst and steam. Epilogue was sweet. Raffa and Chloe married at the behest of their fathers, who were best friends. A marriage that was just duty suddenly became a focal point as the Kingdom needed an heir. Interesting story that kept me engaged so a solid 3 stars!

2.5 "low suds" Stars C.C has a “formula” she sticks to for many of her HP-ish-Sheikh books. I don’t want to say they are tame, but lack the OTT dramatics I like in my soapy-smut. The Sheikh’s are usually broody; opposed to love, (cuz it makes them weak) but not really cruel. They don’t cheat, or color outside the lines, and there’s typically no OW drama… makes for a super safe read, but a smidge boring for a drama whore like me. He has no time for indecision. There is plenty of angst and secrets as two people who barely know each other try to come together to create a future. And struggle they do within themselves as well. What was essentially an arranged marriage presses at the seams and Chloe has to attempt to become pregnant amidst the stress and turmoil. Chloe was a wonderful heroine who did not bow down to Raffa and take his word as law, despite her insecurities, and she had Raffa tied up in knots as well. A hero with his own insecurities and a heroine determined to stay strong regardless of hers, made for an enjoyable read.

Estranged and knowing nothing of one another the conflict between the characters oozes out of the pages. The journey to get to know each other is a rocky one. Raffa is insecure and quite often cold, and Chloe is strong, hiding her feelings and determined not to show weakness to her king. Chloe’s hopes of being able to provide her husband with a baby dwindle away and her fear of being replaced if unable to produce the much-needed heir sets in. Do they work it out? Or does the lack of a baby result in the kingdom unraveling? You'll have to read it to find out.

I really enjoyed this book. Chloe grew up playing in the palace. Her father was best friends with Raffa’s father. When she agreed to marry Raffa was the 1st time Chloe’s father was ever proud of her. It started out that Chloe and Raffa only married because they were asked too by their fathers. Everything changed when Raffa needed an heir. You could feel the passion between the two. In the beginning, I wanted to come through the pages and give Raffa a piece of my mind. Chloe and Raffa were married, the marriage was arranged by their fathers, mainly for political reasons. We enter the story at the point where they were married for a year but it was a marriage in name only, with Raffa’s father terminally ill, he is next in line to rule his country and he needs to line up an heir to secure his future and the future of the country, enemies may try to turnover his rule without doing so. Chloe was happy with the distant relationship they had and was not ready to consummate the marriage, but Raffa, the alpha male that he is gave her an ultimatum, so she abided. They may not have married out of love there is a great chemistry between them and they start to look forward to their physical meetings to make an heir. I loved how this story played out, from how both fought the feelings they started to feel for each other. Also liked how he saw that he needed to treat her bettering work on getting to know each other more. He was a hardened man, out on a mission to do his duty for the country, Chloe felt like she was just a means to an heir. Lots of drama and emotions in this story, including family drama and angst. I was impressed my Chloe’s strength to do the right thing for Raffa and the future of his country. I was vey happy with the way things turned out for them in the end. Clare Connelly thank you for this great story and the emotional rollercoaster ride. I listened to the Audible edition, Meghan Kelly is a fantastic narrator and voice performer. She brings these characters to life, gives each their own voice and personality, as well as heart and attitude. She did an amazing job with the accents, I loved her portrayal of the Sheikh, gave Raffe a voice of not only an alpha male but one of a determined ruler. Also loved her take on Chloe, she allowed you to hear her strength. Great job on all other characters including Amit, the 12 year old son. Meghan Kelly is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to, thank you for another great listen🎧

Trite sheik tale This novel was devoid of any editing causing some issues for the reader! At first, it seem to drag but the ending redeemed this rather trite love story! An arranged marriage that ended happily, of course....we would hardly expect otherwise?

Chloe was an amazing h . She called out the H on his cruel behaviour. I also liked the H. 4 stars.
