Enlightening, Interesting, Informative, Powerful, and Comprehensive I really enjoyed this book. The concepts of lagom from the Swedish and hygge from the Danish have both become popular worldwide according to the author and it is easy to see why. They were full of a lot of good and useful information. They were written in a way that made them easy to understand. They are concepts that can easily be applied to your everyday life. I appreciated the practicality and applicability of these concepts. Enlightening, Interesting, Informative, Powerful, and Comprehensive I really enjoyed this book. They were full of a lot of good and useful information. They were written in a way that made them easy to understand. They are concepts that can easily be applied to your everyday life. I appreciated the practicality and applicability of these concepts. I have always been a firm believer in the importance of balance in this life. Lagom is an amazing way to maintain a balanced life in every aspect of it. Whether discussing food, home, work, exercise, hobbies, loved ones, or the environment, lagom proposes easy to implement solutions for living a better and more balanced life. This can improve all aspects of your health while also help the health of the earth. It can help you save money, be less cluttered, and find more time for things that you enjoy. Hygge is about learning mindfulness so that you can live in the moment and this makes it easier to notice everyday joys. It is about slowing down and finding time to enjoy the little things in this life. It is a mindset that allows you to make time to relax, pursue what matters most to you, and find more happiness. It stresses the importance of making things simpler which can aid in happiness. It has a 21-day challenge where you can begin to practice its principles to see if you can find ways to fit it into and better your life. Both lagom and hygge are amazing concepts that I am going to try to adopt in whatever ways work for me. That is part of what is so wonderful about these books. Anyone can find value within them and apply them as they see fit because it is a personal thing. It is such a joy to learn from other cultures and countries. They were great reads and I recommend them for everyone especially people who want unique ways to improve their lives.

This collection of books was a quick and informative read! They are written using simple, easy to read language without talking down to the reader. These books are about changing your mindset and approach to life, an admittedly abstract concept, but there are so many concrete examples given that none of that seems daunting. The author emphasizes how these concepts can be different from person to person, and that it’s okay to not have a universal definition for something. These books are about changing your mindset and approach to life, an admittedly abstract concept, but there are so many concrete examples given that none of that seems daunting. The author emphasizes how these concepts can be different from person to person, and that it’s okay to not have a universal definition for something. Lagom is a word with a universal understanding, and that is good enough. It is adaptable, which is one of the many reasons this author is likely to see success with a broad audience of individuals. The only criticisms I have of the book are that there were a few typos, and some sentences that I had to take more time to read and understand, likely just because the author is not a native English speaker. This did not detract from the overall experience, however. It should also be mentioned that there were several places that I felt were written just beautifully, and really helped to give a deeper understanding of the concepts of both hygge and lagom. I really appreciated that the books made sure to emphasize that adopting these principles as a part of your life is not an overnight process, while highlighting the benefits of beginning to integrate the ideas shared in the book with your everyday life. Furthermore, the examples given were applicable to a wide variety of people, making the book marketable on a widespread level. These books note how improving your own life view can be a positive influence on others, something very important to keep in mind as you approach each day. A favourite line of mine from the hygge book is how the author says “we are meant to complement one another”. It’s such a simple statement, but it is very impactful. Just like people complement each other, hygge and lagom work hand in hand as well. Lagom, a view on life and way of living, paves the way for hygge, a state of being. These books make it clear that being happy with “enough” is not settling, but rather finding ways to be content and appreciate the life you’ve been given. The author seamlessly ties so many ideas together, like mindfulness practices and appreciating nature, for a cohesive, informative read. From larger lifestyle changes like de-cluttering your house and beginning a new lifestyle routine and changing how you shop for groceries, to simple things like learning how to appreciate the small moments with those you love, this book covers all aspects of hygge and lagom. You’ll be surprised at how simple and easy it is to incorporate these principles into your life.

Pro I like the ideal of the book, I believe people in general are always looking for ways to achieve a balance of sorts, rather it’s in our work live or personal life. I enjoyed the detail explanation of what Lagom means and how to live life according to this principle. I thoroughly enjoyed chapter 5 because it gives me a chance to apply what I learn from the book when I go shopping. Chapter 7 is great because the author gives you recipes, easy recipes, that can help you achieve this lifestyle. Con The explanation of what Lagom is and how it relates to the Swedish doesn’t require two full chapters. I think a short explanation of what the term is would have been sufficient enough and then we should have went straight to applying it to our lifw Overall, if you love a short read that helps you achieve balance in your life, this is the story for you. Don’t be surprised when you achieve it. I give this book four stars The Danish Secrets of Happiness: Hygge, how to be happy and healthy in your daily life The cover of this book is really fun and sort of takes me back to being a child. I like the different images on the front cover too, because it lets me know, the content inside the book will be about different things. This book speaks about Hygge and the state of being happy. Pro I enjoyed this book way more than “A Swedish Guide: Living Lagom To a Balanaced Life.” Immediately the book dives into how one can go about achieving everyday happiness. The book not only focus on changing your mindset to achieve this desire result, but it speaks about colors, and even candles, which all can play a role in achieving Hygge. In addition, the author goes a step further and list ways to achieve Hygge in the work place, with your significant other, family, traveling, season and even with hobbies. She didn’t leave no stone unturned and I appreciate that. Con No cons from me, this book was that awesome. If you’re serious about living a happier life, and need guidance in all of your areas, this short book will definitely help you achieve this. I give this five stars.

I had not heard of Hygge or Lagom before reading this book, but now I am fascinated. This is not another run of the mill self help book, it takes a wide, all encompassing approach that takes the reader by the head and leads them towards building a happier life. It is well written and engaging with a highly readable tone that allows the reader to feel they can come back again and again. It is well written and engaging with a highly readable tone that allows the reader to feel they can come back again and again. Hygge – ‘the quality of coziness’ than engenders a feeling of well being is complemented extremely well by Lagom – the principle of balance and things being ‘just right’. Two concepts that sit comfortably side by side though each aspect could easily be read as a standalone book. The author takes a well rounded approach that leaves no stone unturned. Every aspect of life is explored, from home decor to work and relationships, there is no opportunity to feel adrift or lost, the author has everything covered. What is remarkable is how, as a reader, I was not overwhelmed by the challenge of achieving happiness, a flaw that so often occurs in self help books. The author invites you to start small, appreciating the smell of the flowers, taking enjoying in a hot chocolate with the family. The book is full of small, practical tips that can be steadily applied. As a reader I felt I could change my life one step and a time, rather than going for a complete over hall. It is full of reassurance as well which helped me see that improving my life would not be selfish, nor would I be being lazy. Some steps felt familiar; the need for mindfulness and getting out in nature, but they were given a fresh perspective and at no point does the author lecture or dictate. The book is well structured, with easy to read chapters that would be easy to revisit should any aspect need refreshing. One of the highlights was the 21 day challenges for both Hygge ad Lagom. These did not feel like a test, but a nudge in the right direction. Once again the author thinks of everything and finishes the challenges with a section about life beyond the 21 days. After reading this book I came away feeling that a life with happiness was achievable and well within my reach. I would highly recommend this book and look forward to reading it again and again as I strive for Hygge and Lagom.

This short and enjoyable book summarises perfectly the Scandinavian principles of Hygge and Lagom, and gives honest and practical advice for how to implement them within your own life. Hygge, the Danish practice of warmth and cosiness, is a lovely concept to read about, and it taught me how to take pleasure and relaxation from the cold wintry evenings. It also preached the values of gratitude, simplifying your life, cutting out negativity and embracing comfort – more importantly, allowing yourself comfort without guilt (Something I struggle with!). Mindfulness is something I try to practise already and this book gave me some more ideas of how to implement it. Unfortunately, in such a busy and modern life it can be really difficult to narrow our attention to one aspect. Phones ringing, music or TV on, kids shouting, a million jobs to do - it can be so difficult to just stop for a moment and take the time to smell a cup of coffee and thoroughly enjoy the first sip. This book not only gives ideas for how to achieve the wonderful state of Hygge, but it encourages us to consider WHY it is so important and what it is that we can get from it. I always considered Hygge to be about your environment but this book taught me that there is a mental element to it too. You can Hygge up the way you think, using many of these principles to sort out your time, finances, food, clothing, parenting and relationships. The second volume in this pack is about the Swedish principle of lagom. I hadn’t heard of lagom before but I love the concept! It is about everything being balanced and satisfying. Never too much nor too little. It’s about accepting when you have done enough, when things are complete instead of breaking your back to strive for the constantly unattainable. The Swedish philosophy even encompasses food and this book outlines some wonderful recipes that are deliciously ‘lagom’. The book is well-written and at certain points I loved the author’s wording – ‘enjoy the intricacies and colours of your loved one’s eyes.’ However, the book could do with a thorough editing as there were quite a lot of grammar errors/inconsistencies, though these did not in any way impede my enjoyment of the book.

Lifestyle Advice from Scandinavia This book gives readers a small glimpse of how life is like for Danish and Swedish people. This can be used in every part of a person’s life such as home decor, food, clothes, relationships, job, personal health, family, and friends. Simplifying things and making the surroundings more comforting are the main points to achieving hygge. In the second book, Living Lagom: A Swedish Guide to a Balanced Life, it shows the reader how to obtain balance in their life. The term lagom has many different meanings and therefore, has many different ways to achieve it. Thoresen encourages readers to not stress over perfection, but live a sustainable, health, happy, and balanced life. Like to story of Goldilocks and the three Bears, not too much and not too little. Moderation is key. I will say that one of my criticisms of these books is that some of the information was redundant and could have been summarized better. There were also a few typos but they were not a distraction while reading. An interesting bonus is that each book has a 21 day challenge the reader could do as well as simple Danish and Swedish recipes to try out.

This book was fantastic. I think this is a book that everyone should listen to, because we live in a world that promotes a chaotic lifestyle. It is very hard to enjoy a chaotic lifestyle so this is a very good guide to how to get off the go go go crazyness. I especially like the Hygge material and will definitely be applying my notes to my life. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
