'Enchantress Lanka' is a mesh of sensual experiences, a feast for the senses that tells of the hustle, bustle, and marvels of Sri Lanka ('Pendant dangling from India's slim earlobe/ Tear drop trembling forever on Asia's chin'). Verses are here swaying in a dazzling dance all along, and the swirls can only leave your head spinning with fleeting dreams about such faraway land. Here's the thing with Devika Fernando's poetry: she not only exposes how mysterious, intriguing, seducing and alluring such 'Enchantress Lanka' is a mesh of sensual experiences, a feast for the senses that tells of the hustle, bustle, and marvels of Sri Lanka ('Pendant dangling from India's slim earlobe/ Tear drop trembling forever on Asia's chin'). Verses are here swaying in a dazzling dance all along, and the swirls can only leave your head spinning with fleeting dreams about such faraway land. Here's the thing with Devika Fernando's poetry: she not only exposes how mysterious, intriguing, seducing and alluring such island is (the heat, the landscapes, the people, the noise, the weather...) she does so, above all, with a boisterous language, a lavish cacophony of metaphors and intricate vocabulary those richness equals only the images it serves to evoke. The author indeed has a powerful command of the English language, which makes for a breath-taking read - 'The Sea', 'Serendib's Serenade', 'Return Home', 'Namo Namo Matha', 'In the Afternoon', 'Rain Song'... It's very difficult to pick a favourite out of all those resounding little masterpieces! I have never set foot in Sri Lanka; but I can say one thing for certain: reading Devika Fernando, the whole island smiled to defy me! Beautiful.

Unlike Novels Or Stories Poetry Is Never Easy To Review Or Even Analyse As It Is Next To Impossible To Figure Out What The Poet Was Going Through When They Captured Those Poems. That Way Poetry Is Far More Personal And Thus A Lot Of The Finer Nuances Can Be Missed Out To Several Factors Both External As Well As Internal As The Frame Of Mind That Led To The Poems Coming Alive Cannot Always Be In Sync. Looking Through The Same Prism ‘Enchantress Lanka’ Is Different Reading For Assorted People. As A Unlike Novels Or Stories Poetry Is Never Easy To Review Or Even Analyse As It Is Next To Impossible To Figure Out What The Poet Was Going Through When They Captured Those Poems. As A Matter Of Fact Even The Poems All 26 Of Them Are Capturing Different Facets Of Sri Lanka Also Known As The Pearl Of The Indian Ocean. As The Poems Have Been Penned Over The Span Of An Entire Decade, A Lot Has Changed From The Readers Perspective Thus It Required A Lot Of Going Forward And Backward To Create The Right Aura To Get A Proper Feel Of What The Poetess Devika Fernando Must Have Been Going Through When Those Pearls Flowed From The Heart Of The Poetry Onto Paper. In Such Circumstances The Finer Nuances Can Well Be Missed If One Is Not On The Same Wavelength As The Poet. Perhaps That Is One Reason Why This Anthology Of Poems Moves At An Erratic Pace...The Poems Are Either Very Good And Touch The Very Core Of The Heart At Times And At Other Times So Slow Paced That They Almost Seem To Drag Their Feet & Actually Tempt The Reader To Shut The Book And Move On. But Then Close On The Heels Another Gem Follows And Faith Is Once Again Restored To Plough Along Hoping The Gems Shall Be Consistent Before Another Hiccup Follows. There Is Indeed No Doubt That Since Devika Fernando Has Sailed On Two Boats Her Perspective Is Laced In Nostalgia But At The Same Time Offers A Western Outlook To The Same Situations When She Was Out Of The Country When Events Changed The Face Of Her Motherland In A Series Of Events. Some Of The Poems That Really Touched The Very Core Of My Heart At Times Even Disturbing & Rattling The Conscience Include ‘Enchantress The Sea’ With Which This Anthology Opens. In A Single Poem Devika Fernando Puts Across The History Of Her Motherland Island From The Moods & Emotions That Changes The Perspective Almost Like The Tide That Constantly Swing From Low To High With A Spell Of Calmness. Then There Is Geometry, Mysterious Maidens, Return Home, Sri Lanka, Trading Traditions, It’s A Hard Life, When It Rains It Pours, Multi Faced Lanka, Be Who You Are Amongst The 26 That Complete This Anthology Of Thought Provoking Poems Of Devika Fernando!!!
