3.8 stars Imagine your fav bookboyfriend coming to life? Thats what happens in this book. But they are not just normal people, the raven is Poe’s raven who can shift into a human, Heathcliff from wuthering heights and James Moriarty. They all found themselves out of the book into the real world one day and they dont know how they got there. Just when Mina was starting a new life, she becomes the main suspect of her best friend’s murder but Mina along with the guys finds out who the real culprit is. Soo.. i didnt think i ll be hooked to this book till the end and devour each page. So much suspense + romance + hilarious scenes. Oh god, i enjoyed reading this book so much. I was in full detective mode and tried to solve the case along the characters, it felt like i was watching a romcom/ crime movie or smtg. The way Mina and her guys solved the murder i was like DUDE YOU GUYS ARE SMART. 👏🏻😂😂. There were some funny scenes which made me laugh and then it was serious because Mina was suffering from smtg and she just wanted a normal life where she had her dream job but then she gets involved in the murder case and also 3 hot fictional characters. I like Heathcliff’s character, he was grumpy and he was her boss cuz he owned the bookstore. The way he behaved with his customers was so funny. Then there is Morrie who is ofc the smart one, he was flirty and confident. Then there is the raven aka Qouth who is a bird but can transform into a human. He is kinda broken cuz he thinks he is useless and has no purpose but he is a great artist and Mina helps him acknowledge his talent. Overall i really loved this book but the chemistry between them was lacking a bit, maybe cuz they are like fictional characters whom we already have read about in other books but also i liked their bonding. They helped Mina and didnt let her suffer. The whole killer thing was cool and fun to read, i legit suspected everyone and it was easy to guess who the killer is but also it was amazing to see how they solved the case.

First book in the series, A dead and stormy night is a delicious cocktail of literature, mystery, hotness and grumpiness. The dynamics between this improbable group is absolutely delightful, the sexual tension through the roof, the multiple influences from famous books delectable and the humor sassy. It's a little bit of Agatha Christie, of Conan Doyle, of Allan Poe, of Jane Austen, of Emily Bronte, and it's a real pleasure to read. For: + The RH fanatics + All the bookworm in the world + Little detective bees Is Heathcliff as a contemporary grumpy love interest panty melting? Fuck yes.

DNF. This seems to be becoming a theme for me lately. I found Mina obnoxious and whiny, the guys were blah--although the author told us all about their personalities and how we should feel about them, we are not really shown--and the "murder mystery" was eye rolling at best. This was such a fun book. I loved Mina and her quirky personality. Also her thoughts about the guys made me laugh so much. The girl has no thought filter and I loved it. The romance was really good and hot as heck. Cannot wait to see what's going to happen between Mina and her dark bois. To be honest, I had guessed the murderer pretty early on. The reasons were a little convoluted, but I was more invested in Mina's life story than the actual murder mystery here. Plus there's the whole phenomenon of the shop bringing literally characters to life--I want answers.

I really liked this. It's the second series I've read by this author and it definitely has similar vibes. There's a slight cheesiness (as was in her other series) which I occasionally find a bit off putting, but she's good at characterisation, which I can forgive a lot for. The premise of this book is really fun. I love the idea of book characters coming to life. Heathcliff, Moriarty and Quoth (shape-shifting Raven from Poe's poem) were intriguing characters and I really enjoyed their interaction I really liked this. The MC is dealing with her life imploding due to a betrayal from her friend and a dehibiliating medical diagnosis and she turns to the Nevermore Bookshop as a way to distract herself from her issues. I liked her narrative voice and she felt 'real' in her behaviour. I liked the punk rock vibe she has going on, too. There also looks like there's going to be some good female friendship representation, which is always a rare bonus in RH. I can't decide which of the guys are my favourite. I think I have a soft spot for Quoth, but Moriarty is so much fun. Plus Heathcliff is the altimate romantic anti hero, so it's all good really. Hopefully it sounds like the overarching plot is going somewhere interesting, so I'm off to read the next one!

Best Twist Ever Holmes is one amazing writer!! I fell in love from page with our down on her luck MC that is hoping to score a job at Nevermore bookstore. After one wonky interview she scored the job which will change her life forever as the story unfolds. I was totally riveted as it all played and I loved the idea for the male characters. With so much fun stuff in this one I cannot wait for book two!! A total must read!! I loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

I'm part of the facebook group from Steffanie Holmes. I get her newsletter. I obsess over all the pretty covers and the awesome blurbs. And yet I had never actually read anything BY her. Somehow her books got a little lost on the wishlist, surfacing once in a while, but then pushed aside again. Shame on me. But, the moment this book landed on my iPad I couldn't wait any longer and had to get started. Because everything about this book screamed my name. Loudly. And the book did not disappoint. But, the moment this book landed on my iPad I couldn't wait any longer and had to get started. Because everything about this book screamed my name. Loudly. And the book did not disappoint. Even better! I think it was much and much and much better than I had hoped and wished it would be. And that already started with the writing style. Holmes has an amazing style that fits the story and the characters so well. It's not too complicated or flowery and yet not too modern and casual either. There's a certain beauty to it and it doesn't mean it's harder to read. It flows. It works. It's perfect for this book and this world. On top of that this book has an amazing plot that's gripping from start to finish. At first there's the whole mystery of the bookstore, getting to know the characters and finding out more about them, who they are and what makes them tick. And then there's the murder mystery, perfectly balanced with the characters getting to know each other even better, growing towards each other and slowly forming a wonderful bond. It are therefore the characters who truly steal the show. It already starts with Mina. Without info dumping, we get to know her pretty well. We learn about her past and her future and we mostly get to see how she deals with her current life. As someone who got disabled later in life, at 18, too Mina's emotions, her denial and her struggles felt so real, even though a different part of our life is touched. And then there were the three guys. I loved how real they felt, how vivid they were, even though they also stay some kind of mystery. I can't wait to get to see more of them and learn more about them. I really wish I had started this series sooner, because it has everything I was looking for. Intelligent characters, a gripping plot, a good romance and a very nice build up. Is it next week already?

Ooh, this was a lot of fun This was such a novel premise (pardon the pun) that even moments where I wasn’t enjoying the story so much - yes, I’m looking at you Mina’s mum - still didn’t put me off this story. It’s almost as annoying as insta-love in books. Still, Grimalkin was adorable, and the uncovering the mystery of Nevermore has tempted me into picking up book 2. 4 stars ⭐️

I suppose it's good if you're completely unimaginative but still want to think about what it would be like if the douchebags from some of the books you read in high school came to life and fell in love with you. I suppose it could have been worse and the book could have been about a high school girl stuck in the bookshop with Harry Potter, Edward from Twilight, and the tiger from Life of Pi.

Literary lovers unite! And I do mean that because James Moriarty, Heathcliff, and Poe's Raven are the main stars here. As I was reading this, I kept expecting to be disappointed, annoyed, and exasperated. It was a pleasant surprise when I found myself enjoying this immensely. She was a great girl to like. There are so many mysteries surrounding her though, none of which were resolved in this installment. The author also made her intriguing with the addition of an insidious, genetic condition that will eventually lead to permanent blindness. I'm very much looking forward to uncovering all the secrets behind her character. How delightful that infamous characters were involved and they all had individual and unique personalities. This is something I greatly appreciated. They were all so yummy! One complaint: The perpetrator of the little murder mystery was obvious, and I was surprised that Mina was so oblivious about it. Because of this, I took a star off because it wasn't suspenseful enough when I already guessed the climax. I really liked that the author decided to make this series a murder mystery though since all the characters bring something different and entertaining to the table. Overall: what a surprise this book was. I could see myself rereading this in the future. I would definitely recommend it to those who like slow burn, murder mystery, literary characters come to life, RH, and book stores. Happy reading, Goodreads fiends.

A sassy and independent FMC who was backstabbed by her best friend, Ashley, after finding out she was going bling and three hot-as-sin males who just so happen to come from three classic novels. Mina starts to work at the bookstore managed by Heathcliff, and together the four of them need to figure out why the three guys came in the "real world" and who killed Mina's best friend. Oh, and another problem... the police seems to think that Mina killed her best friend because Ashley backstabbed Mina metaphorically, while Ashley was backstabbed literally!

Wilhelmina Wilde read the ad for an assistant position in the 4-story tall Nevermore Bookshop, surprisingly one of the largest secondhand bookshops in England. She had spent many hours of her childhood there. Now reading the ad, a normal person would walk away from it without question – but Mina needed a job and she loved books. What could go wrong? Mina had attended New York’s infamous Fashion Institute, and when she graduated, she got a year internship with her favorite designer. At about that same time, she also noticed a blur in the corner of her eye, making her trip down stairs and knock things over, and she had pounding headaches day and night. Her good friend Ashley took the opportunity to betray her, telling the boss who promptly let her go… which is why she had to come home. She went to the bookshop for the strangest interview she had ever had. As she decided it was hopeless, she got up to leave, only to be told to be there by 8:30 or the raven in the shop would get her first paycheck! Going home, Mina finds her mom moving machines into the living room. It’s her latest get-rich scheme, selling these things that vibrate the pounds off will make them big money, she says. Then she tells Mina that Ashley has come to England for a visit! Mina cannot tolerate this horrible news – but Ashley hates to read and would never come inside a bookshop, so maybe it will be okay. Arriving on time for her first day at work, the bookshop was locked. When she knocked, neighbors poked their heads out the windows and complained of the noise. But finally the door opened – not by Mr. Earnshaw, her boss, but by a handsome man who introduced himself as James Moriarty. Then the man deduced that she grew up in this village, had just come back from America, New York in fact, and answered the ad. She was amazed! Even Mr. Earnshaw didn’t know all of that information. And when she then learned her boss’ name was Heathcliff, from Wuthering Heights, she couldn’t believe it! And Poe’s raven, who turned out to be a shapeshifter – he was also a flatmate of theirs! But when her boss finally tells her about a curse that brought them all out of the pages of books, she was stunned. Worse yet, Ashley shows up and is murdered. Of course Mina, her ex-friend with a reason to hate her, is accused of killing her. Can she and her friends track down the real murderer? And when did Mina start thinking of them as “her boys”??? I really enjoyed this story! It was quite different from just about everything else I’ve read. It was funny, and I loved the interaction of the characters. I definitely recommend this book because it’s unusual and has a good story line. I would so love to have my favorite characters come to life! What an adventure! (Suggestion to the author: please drop the underscores throughout the pages – they are distracting and irritating; and they do not accomplish what you intended.)

A DEAD AND STORMY NIGHT by Steffanie Holmes is the fist book in the Nebermore Bookshop Mysters Series. This is the story of Wilhelmina 'Mina' Wilde. Mina lost her job thanks to her suppose to be best friend. Coming back home she finds a job working at a bookstore. This book store holds a mystery that is starting to unravel. Great start to a very excting story. Can't wait to read the next book. A DEAD AND STORMY NIGHT by Steffanie Holmes is the fist book in the Nebermore Bookshop Mysters Series. Elementary, me dear Fascinating and down right cheeky novel about love, loss, mystery and the power of the written word - literally. The main make characters are come straight from classic literature, Heathcliff if Wuthering Heights, James Moriarty of Sherlock fame, and Quath..., Poe’s Raven. Somehow, someway, they emerge from the dust if their stories to roam and tend an aging bookstore, Nevermore. And now they just band together to help their new assistant beat a murder charge! Somehow, someway, they emerge from the dust if their stories to roam and tend an aging bookstore, Nevermore. And now they just band together to help their new assistant beat a murder charge! Great premise, great characters, poor mystery. The mystery in question, murder most foul, felt a bit like a side note instead of the crux. The story is really about the store, what it does and the joining if this strange and mismatched quartet. Pros: -Flows well - Characters, ALL of them. - Engrossing subplots - Romantic tension written well - Moriarty... I always liked him better than Sherlock. Cons: - minor editing issues, does not detract - Murder mystery felt superfluous - FMC needs to grow a bit, she makes impulsive and immature decisions.

I’ve read two books from this author, the first being Briarwood which I didn’t like and the second Shunned, which I did like. I would say this one is my favourite. It revolves around books, the characters are well written and it’s fun with a little murder mystery. I felt sorry for Mina, I’m curious if there is a way to save her. Three guys. Well two and a Raven. One is brooding, one is a charming evil genius and the other poops a lot. I wanna see Moriarty meet the mother. Looking forward to reading the next one.

This was actually wonderful and nothing like I’ve read before. The only reason it’s four stars instead of three is because sometimes it felt hard to connect to the romance because the plot was going on. Overall this was great!
