The Floating Theatre tells the story of May, a girl who in order to save others, must risk her own life. Based in the 1830s it tells of slavery, love, friendship and courage. The Floating Theatre had me gripped from the start, with believable characters and twists & turns throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and i will be reading more by Martha Conway for sure.

Entertaining but the end was rather unbelievable - someone holds one kind of opinion but at the end they suddenly offer a completely different one without a clear reason why they've changed their mind. The first part of this book was really engaging and set up the characters and setting well. The complexity of the issues involved were beginning to be explored. The last third of the book was disappointing. The ending lacked lustre and everything resolved without emotion or detail.

It was an innovative way of depicting the issue of slavery as the setting in along the border of the North South divide. Also the variety of opinions and outlooks you get from the characters and their changes of heart are also well depicted. Overall an enjoyable book.

Enjoyable read with well drawn characters and a relatively light read given the subject matter (slavery). The idea of a novel set on a floating theatre on the Ohio River was original. Overall a good read with a happy ending.
