Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City HBO Series Tie-In Edition

Availability: Ready to download

Through most of the 20th century, Atlantic City was controlled by a powerful partnership of local politicians and racketeers. Funded by payoffs from gambling rooms, bars, and brothels, this corrupt alliance reached full bloom during the reign of Enoch "Nucky" Johnson — the second of three bosses to head the Republican machine that dominated city politics and society. In Boardwalk Empire, Nucky Johnson, Louis "the Commodore" Kuehnle, Frank "Hap" Farley, and Atlantic City itself spring to life in all their garish splendor. Author Nelson Johnson traces "AC" from its birth as a quiet seaside health resort, through the notorious backroom politics and power struggles, to the city's rebirth as an international entertainment and gambling mecca where anything goes. Boardwalk Empire is the true story that inspired the epic HBO series starring Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, and Kelly Macdonald, with a pilot episode written by Terence Winter (The Sopranos) and directed by Martin Scorsese (Shutter Island).

I have never seen the HBO series based on this but I do have family that lives across the bay from Atlantic City. We used to spend our vacations on Ocean City NJ and once during our trip at night the grownups would go to Atlantic City at night. When I saw there was a book about the history of Atlantic City I knew I had to read it. And I was not disappointed. This book does exactly that, a straight up history of AC without any tangents or unnecessary side stories. When I saw there was a book about the history of Atlantic City I knew I had to read it. And I was not disappointed. This book does exactly that, a straight up history of AC without any tangents or unnecessary side stories. We get a story about how AC almost never happened, to the introduction of the railroad, and the rise of the Republican Party that ruled for decades, using kickbacks and bribes, but also taken care of the people. To the corruption scandals that finally caught up with them, to its massive decline, then fight for legalized gambling and its rise from the ashes. Unfortunately the original book was printed in 2003 so the writer was lauding the arrival of Donald Trump and that AC was on the cusp of greatness again. However in an afterword 5 years later he details the decline of AC again though no mention on how Trump also helped the decline as well. AC is now no longer the shining city it used to be, but it’s still fun reading a straightforward history filled with colorful characters and more. Well worth it.
