But Kathy was determined to follow dreams, not customs. Her rash retort that she was going to travel around the world—before she was 21—set her on a path of unexpected experiences and discovery. Nice Girls DO Travel is the humorous memoir of a committed but naive 19-year-old girl who left Montreal in 1968. As she got into the habit of facing her fears, the challenges became less daunting, more exciting. Sometimes she slept in mansions, sometimes she slept in a car or a railway station waiting room. Often she was hungry and almost out of money. Never did she regret her decision to defy convention. Kathy returned home 18 months later as a confident woman. Her adventures and misadventures had taken her to Ireland, Scotland, England, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, through the Panama Canal, Fort Lauderdale and back to Montreal. This is a story of love and laughter, friendship and hardship and important lessons learned. It is the story of finding the way even in darkness. (Nice Girls DO Travel is a prequel to Anywhere but Saudi Arabia.)

At the age of 18 in 1968 Katie left her home in Montreal to travel the world. She spent the next 18 months of her life working hard, seeing new places, learning new skills, making new friends, having romances and discovering more about herself. While I wish there had been more details about what she was seeing, the book was largely focused on the activities that facilitated the travels. My favorite part was actually watching the friendship develop between Katie and Bonnie who met on the ship from England to South Africa. It was also very interesting to see life and travel as it was in the late 60's through Katie's eyes. For those who are squeamish there are some parts that are quite graphic. Without going in to too much detail some involve human injuries, but at times she worked at places where animals are slaughtered. So both human and animal blood. I received this book free from Goodreads giveaways which does not have an impact on my reviews.

Having read Kathy Cuddihy's excellent Anywhere But Saudi Arabia, I looked forward to reading about her life before Saudi, and was not disappointed. Thank you Kathy! Your book is great. I am starting chapter 7. The boat trip sounds amazing. Wondering if such a thing still exists? I am excited to continue reading. #GoodreadsKindleWin
