This book was originally published in 1899 so it’s 110 years old this year. Even so it presents arguments for vegetarianism that seem quite relevant today. One can even hear echos from it in arguments made by modern day animal rights activists such as Earthling Ed, and James Aspay. The difference is of course that they are vegans while Salt was a vegetarian. Still I think Salt would approve of their arguments because it sounds as if he felt vegetarianism would eventually be replaced by diet with This book was originally published in 1899 so it’s 110 years old this year. The difference is of course that they are vegans while Salt was a vegetarian. Still I think Salt would approve of their arguments because it sounds as if he felt vegetarianism would eventually be replaced by diet without any animal products. One part of Salt’s argument does not often pop up in modern debates about veganism or vegetarianism, and that is his references to cannibalism. His point is perhaps valid, but that argument is not often used today. The other difference is his references to eggs, and dairy that wouldn’t go down easily with Earthling Ed, or James Aspey. Other than that they seem to be coming from exactly the same place despite the time that has passed since Salt was fighting for the rights of animals. And that’s the thing in a way. How little has changed is in a way what I found most interesting about this book. How much of these arguments that were debunked in Salt’s time are still used today against vegetarianism, or perhaps more these days against veganism, just because that is more controversial.

This book is more than a hundred years old, but the logic poured into it, is still valid and relevant... at least for the most part. The book makes very good arguments backing up vegetarianism as the right moral choice focusing on the animal rights movement, which back then, must have been a lot less widely considered as an important issue. It tackles many common claims made by "flesh eaters" against vegetarianism, sadly the majority are still currently used. I wonder how the author would assess the progress made since he wrote the book to this day. I am specially curious about what his thoughts would be regarding veganism and how many people adopting that lifestyle, sometimes do it from an emotional standpoint and not from a logical one (which is not necessarily a bad thing). He was all for dietary revolution, and vehemently defended his views through his books, but now he would probably be considered on the pasive side on the spectrum of activism.

This book was mentioned in Gandhi Before India which I had read a few days back and really wanted to go through Salt’s book to understand the logic for vegetarianism first hand. The book seems to have influenced Gandhi’s dietary habits and was quoted very often by him. In fact Gandhi not only followed the book’s recommendations but also emulated the conversational style used by Salt in his first book Hind Swaraj. The book is quite old and now modern research into vegan has provided more credibility to the vegetarian diet, but still it is good to know that the whole vegan movement is not a modern phenomenon but has been advocated for a long time.

It has dispelled some of the most ridiculous arguments I had against vegetarianism that I thought were pretty rational and logic. Really recommend this book.
