Noddy without a hat is almost unthinkable but in this story he is not only without it but he inadvertently wears Big Ears' hat, which is red against Noddy's blue - and Big Ears' hat does not have a bell on it! The story begins with Noddy and Big Ears asleep after having taken afternoon tea. Noddy wakes with a start and realises that he has to pick up Tessie Bear in his car from Sally Skittle's house. Noddy's car starts rattling so Noddy without a hat is almost unthinkable but in this story he is not only without it but he inadvertently wears Big Ears' hat, which is red against Noddy's blue - and Big Ears' hat does not have a bell on it! The story begins with Noddy and Big Ears asleep after having taken afternoon tea. Noddy wakes with a start and realises that he has to pick up Tessie Bear in his car from Sally Skittle's house. Unfortunately as he dashes out he grabs the wrong hat and sets off. Noddy's car starts rattling so he calls at Mr Sparks' garage to have it seen to. But Mr Sparks is busy so Clockwork Mouse is assisting him. However, Noddy does not trust Mouse so he does the job himself as Mouse holds the hat. Car fixed, Noddy jumps in, drives off and forgets the hat. Mr Plod comes along and decides he will return it to its owner, which he realises is Big Ears. Meanwhile Noddy picks up Tessie but realises that he has lost his hat. He decides he will go back to Mr Sparks' garage to see if he has left it there. Big Ears is cycling to House-For-One, Noddy's house, when Sly and Gobbo, the naughty goblins, waylay him. But Big Ears rides over their toes and continues on his way. Shortly thereafter he passes Noddy who spots his hat on Big Ears' head. Noddy, therefore, gets his hat back but there is no sign of Big Ears' hat, which Mr Plod has taken back to Big Ears' house. And that is where Sly and Gobbo find Mr Plod, fast asleep awaiting the return of Big Ears. The goblins play another joke but things do not turn out quite the way they expect and they suffer accordingly while Noddy, Big Ears and Mr Plod settle down to a delicious cup of cocoa. BBC Children's Books have based this charming tale on their television series that was showing at the time of publication.
