She dated many men she met along the way but never settled her heart for love. On her twenty-eight birthday, Suda opens the letter and this one sends her home to Colorado. Suda finally come back to face her sister Evie and her first love Camden whom she left brokenhearted many years prior. Evie has a lot of resentment toward Suda for abandon her all alone. Camden is still hurt and beyond angry – he cannot understand how Suda could discarded their relationship like yesterday trash. Suda is ready to settle and start to put down roots. It’s will not be an easy feast as she needs help from her sister and Camden. She has a lot of hurdle to overcome because the people that know her the best are not totally convinced Suda will be ever be content with this new life. The one person Suda must try the hardest is Camden who not only her business investor but also the person she still loves deeply. I do feel for Suda though – she can’t help who she is. Suda made some hard decisions and she had to live with the heartache as well. Will Suda finally find a way to spread her wings, find her HEA, and still plant roots? Ooopfs, this one is full of angsts, slow burn, emotional and passionate. What the Hearts wants is a heartfelt, gorgeous story about a young lady self-discovery, family, friendship, forgiveness and second chance romance. Unique and unforgettable!

Audrey Carlan is a new-to-me-author and her writing style and pacing was pleasing. A plot centered around family, the strong bond between sisters, a journey to find oneself and a second chance to mend a broken love are among my favorite draws. And the addition of the Native American cultural aspects were probably the best part of this book for me. A wonderful addition in adding a deep and meaningful layer to the storyline. And the addition of the Native American cultural aspects were probably the best part of this book for me. A wonderful addition in adding a deep and meaningful layer to the storyline. Sadly, even though there were parts I found interesting and entertaining, there was a greater number of dislikes. I apologize upfront for the rambling review that follows, but I had a really hard time with this one getting my feelings down in words. Her mother’s last words to Suda Kaye Ross: Fly free. And fly she did all over the world for a decade – before finally returning home. This book started out with a bang with its unique hook, but the more I read the less interested I became. My feelings regarding Suda Kaye were very conflicting. I liked her and then I didn’t like her very much at all. Even in the end, she just didn't fulfill my expectations. Camden was a supertastic hero and I thought he got the short end of the stick with Suda Kaye. This wasn’t quite what I expected – and a lot didn’t fall into place for me either. In a planned seduction, a young and inexperienced girl gives her virginity to long-time boyfriend, and then immediately takes off for parts unknown without giving him any kind of warning after swearing her love for him -- gone for over a decade without so much as a word between them. That’s just not right – mean girl in the making. Maybe it was just me, but I thought her sexual escapades with a different guy in every port were a little over-the-top. I definitely didn’t like how she flaunted them at every chance she got in front of Camden and her sister, Evie. Suda Kaye was all over the place with her feelings – and not very genuine it seemed, causing this reader to doubt her commitment to long-term relationships! I found the ongoing episode between Cam and his current Barbie Doll scamming fiancée to be frivolous page-filler and maybe something that could have or should have been left out altogether. The one real relationship where he felt something genuine for another woman that lasted a year during Suda Kaye’s absence received barely a nod. In my opinion, it added nothing to the storyline, and the time could have been beneficially spent on Cam and Suda Kaye’s second chance. The two bros who worked as carpenters in Suda Kaye’s new “Gypsy” store were an interesting pair – complete opposites of the other. Bringing a little action into the story, they drew my attention and I would like to know more about them – perhaps after Evie gets her story with Milo and one I’m highly anticipating. Overall, I found What the Heart Wants to be a middle of the road read – and one I’ll admit was more than a little disappointing. I had fallen in love with both the cover and title, and the hype had me over-excited for this book's arrival. I'm well aware that I'm in the minority with my opinions, but it just didn't sit well with me from almost the start.

This was a beautiful story. It was heart wrenching at times, it had well developed characters, moved at a great pace, and touched on a lot of subjects that I know little about so also very educational. I hope that there will be more books in this series.

But while he is engaged he flirts with the heroine and says things like they can remain friends, for now, implying there will be more to their relationship soon. During their 10 year separation, both are with others. He was in a serious relationship for a year. She flitted from place to place and was intimate when she felt like with whoever. No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine but a contractor does kiss the heroine and the Hero sees it. Breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series. HEA. But I would doubt her commitment given how fast things move in their relationship.

New to me author Audrey Carlen swept me away with this wonderful tale of second-chance love. Well, love that endured for ten long years. Suda Kay and Camden both stole my heart and took me on at beautiful trip with their unending love. Suda Kay was a wanderer, just like her mother. Fly Free was her motto and went wherever her heart or the letter from her mother took her. She was a bird with a wingspan as large as the earth and they never got tired. Until the last letter when she was told that it was time to go home. Be with Evie and let her heart now rule her soul. So, she does. Evie is thrilled yet wary that her sister isn’t just going to flit into town and flit right back out again. She’s hurt, she’s vulnerable and yet she hopes that this isn’t just a visit. She will support her in any way that she can except for the one that that Suda asks for … investing in a project that may or may not take off in their town. She has an idea that could help her and would involve and little more work and commitment from Suda. She hopes this is what keeps her where she belongs. Camden is taken aback, furious and extremely surprised that the client that they are interviewing is his Suda Kay. The woman who flew away and never looked back. He loved her, wanted nothing more than to spend his life with her, give her whatever it was she needed but she just left. Now she’s back and his life is turned upside down. Is it for good, is she going to fly away again, is she here to win him back? So many questions and she refuses to answer them. He can’t move forward, and he can’t stop thinking about the past. Until everything finally comes together, and he has no choice but to trust her and his instincts. I love the way this story flowed. From beginning to end, you had no choice but to turn page after page and hope that tears wouldn’t be flowing down your cheeks. Sad tears, happy tears, tears of joy. Ms. Carlan breaks your heart and then puts it back together again. I loved the camaraderie between Evie and Suda Kay even though Evie would get really moody at times. I loved the banter between Camden and Suda Kay once things settled down. Their loved was palpable and shined through whenever they were together. The supporting characters in the book just made everything so much more enjoyable and brought the story together. From the Indian culture to sizzling sex scenes, I couldn’t have been happier with the way this story was told, with the way it was written or with the way it ended. If I could have given it a 10 star review, I would have. Audrey Carlan has my attention and I am looking forward to reading more from this amazing author. What the Heart Wants showed us how to dream, how to love your life and your family, what unconditional love means and how to know when to grab onto that love and those dreams and never let go. Luckily for us readers, Suda Kaye's love life isn't the only relationship nourished from the roots up as Audrey Carlan does a fantastic job of bringing raw beauty to the love of sisterhood! Her writing style draws me in every time, there's just something about it - the familiarity, the love of feeling connected, the humor, and the unashamed intimacy. What the Heart Wants is genuinely unforgettable. Our story begins in the aftermath of Suda Kaye's mother's death as she embarks on what ends up becoming a decade long adventure around the world, experiencing more than most could ever hope for in a lifetime. On every birthday, Suda and her sister Evie open a new pre-written letter from their mother, designated for specific times and milestones in their lives. As she reads her latest letter on her 28th birthday, she knows that it's time to return home. After coming back to her sister, Evie, in Colorado, Suda Kaye decides it's time to dig in settle down. Although her sister isn't the only person, she runs back into... queue, her first love, Cam. Four days. That's all it took for me to devour every.single.page! It would have been much sooner, but, you know - the life of a mom and wife came calling... and sleep. Yet, when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. The heartwarming stories of Suda Kaye, Evie, Cam, the loveable Bryants, elder Tahsuda, and Milo were a joy to read. Although fictional, there was something bittersweet about the realistic feeling within What the Heart Wants. Just make sure you read the author's note at the end as there's much insight on the inspiration and sheer amount research put into this novel. Quick question before I go, have you heard the song "No Place" by the Backstreet Boys? Parts of this song remind me of What the Heart Wants in many ways; Suda Kaye has traveled the world, but there just ain't no place like home! I am very much looking forward to reading Evie's story in the upcoming sequel To Catch a Dream. The preview at the end just makes me all the more interested in the 'Ross' sisters! I would recommend this book to everyone because literally, everyone should experience What the Heart Wants. This story makes you think: the road taken vs the one not taken, old loves and new chances, coming home again. It's about family and love and connections. Connections within relationships that do not need to be tended everyday to be there when you reach for them again. I want to read this book over and over again and discover nuances I missed in previous read throughs. All the stars!!

The deep connection with her sister, Evie, was simply wonderful and what I think we all hope we find. As was the influence of her mother and the truly special connection with her even in death. But it was the reconnection with Camden that just brought this story full circle. The way their attraction leapt off the page to me, even when Cam is frustrated with her that did me in! These two were passion personified. I mean holy hotness Audrey!! I loved Camden in all his alpha, “you left me but damnit I still love you” glory. I love that he both fights his desire for Suda Kaye but can’t stop himself around her at the same time. But it’s when he finally owns that his life isn’t complete without her that he comes alive. I love a second chance story; there’s just something that hits me in the feels about them. What the Heart Wants was all of this and more. It was as much about the love between Suda Kaye and Camden as it is a story of coming home, finding your place and your inner home.

It is such a lovely story, which I will definitely have on my to reread list in the "make me smile and cheer me up" column. Suda Kaye has been on the adventure of lifetime, but now decides it time to go home. No one there can really trust that after ten years of travel she will really settle, so there is a sadness about them waiting for the shoe to drop. This is so beautifully written and lived out, that I could feel the desire of Evie to believe her, of Cam to think there might be a chance she'd stay, but they can't quite. I loved the boutique being created, the fun with the constructor, and the craft items that she creates to sell. It was a wonderful marker of her arrival, yet her remaining a flamboyant and free person, marching to her own beat, but building a business around her skills and to bring happiness to others through beautiful things. As for the romance, well it had been 14 years in the making/waiting, but with the complication of a fiancée and her crazy sidekick, things don't go smoothly, until they do ... and we get to see that maybe 10 years apart was the making of them, not the end at all. I do hope that we get Evie's story too - as the Porter / Milo issues need to be explored

Wow!!! holy guacamole, Audrey has taken her writing to extraordinary heights with this new title! The story of Suda Kay, reading her mother’s words and throwing life she knew it behind her was incredible! I was NOT expecting this story to play out this way, but it blew everything I was expecting away and then some. I’ve read and re-read every title she’s written and this is on a level of its own. I was captivated by her relationship with her sister and her lover Camden. This novel has you feelin Wow!!! holy guacamole, Audrey has taken her writing to extraordinary heights with this new title! A lovely story about second chances- second chance romance and second chance family. Suda Kaye left Colorado when she was 18, inspired (or compelled) by a letter from her deceased mom. She left behind her sister Evie and Camden, a good guy. She travels the world- all over the world- and then, 10 years in, comes home. Things aren't the same as they were when she left. You know they will, don't you- because Suda Kaye didn't bond with any other man while she was out and about. Thanks to Edelweiss fo the ARC. Nicely done characters and good storytelling made this a pleasant read.

Suda Kaye takes after her mother with her wandering/exploring heart, so when she opens a letter on her 18th birthday from her now deceased mom, she can’t resist following in her footsteps to go explore the world, leaving her sister and boyfriend behind. Ten years later, the letter on her 28th birthday suggests it is time for her to start to put down roots. She returns to her sister’s house and is trying to figure out the next phase of her life. Little did she know she would run into Cam, her first and only love who she had left behind. This is a touching story that pulled me in from the beginning as Suda Kaye works on what is next for her, in addition to dealing with Cam and Evie’s (her sister) feelings of loss and somewhat betrayal from when she just picked up and left them without warning. This book had a different feel than what I typically see in an Audrey Carlan book, but I really enjoyed this heartwarming story (with some typical steam mixed in) and could barley put it down. I am also now looking forward to Evie’s story.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I like the author, but this book is not my cuppa. The female character was lusting after and planning to sleep with another guy even after she reconnected with Cam. Also, whenever she would recall a certain place, it's always connected to a sexcapade, instead of the place, people or culture. She didn't reflect on what she learned from her experience or talk about the connections and friendships she has formed, only guys she bedded. Looking forward to the story of her sister, Evie.

She is brave and jumps in head first and goes for it all always! I was enchanted by Suda Kaye from page one and I wanted her and her vibe in my life. From the get go, I felt like Suda could be my sister, or my friend or my confidant. Audrey Carlan brings the magic in this sexy women's fiction novel. The journey is brilliant, magnificent and poignant in a path of self discovery for Suda Kaye. The words that Ms. Carlan writes are so powerful and full of life that Suda will forever be etched in my heart. As I was reading, I was a champion rooting for Suda Kaye to find her way, to make amends and to find the one true love that she was looking for. I found all of this and more. She is the most endearing character, who can make you laugh out loud like no other or make you want to drop your jaw to the ground with how forward and comfortable in her skin she is in. Her passion for life propels this story to one of the greats in my list of books. And the lessons of love that Suda Kaye gets from her one true love Camden, leaves me with a desire to find a man so well suited to love Suda Kaye like Camden. He is so perfect, noble and authentic in his passion for the woman that he loves. The secondary characters add to the richness of this book so much. Evie, the big sister who has a bit of a chip on her shoulder, but a love for her sister that is awe-inspiring. Toko, who is the grandfather who all of us want to have because he is wise, loving and stable in his love and guidance for his granddaughter’s. Read this book. Trust me, you will fall head over heels for it just like I did. I am elated that I got to go on this journey with Suda Kaye. As an avid Audrey Carlan fan and reader, I think this book takes the cake and will wow you beyond all expectations. Dare I say that this series may just be my new favorite of this dear author of mine.

Suda Kaye has been following the advice she receives from letters that her deceased mother left behind. They have always encouraged her to live out her dreams and experience life as much as possible. Her last letter is just the opposite. She needs to return home but when you have been gone for so long things are just not the same. Suda Kaye returns back to her sister Evie and there is tension between the two. Suda is trying to get back into the fold of her family. To make matters even worse, she has to confront her former lover, Camden. Whew! There is so much to unpack in this story. This is just much more than a second chance romance. There is love for self and sisterly love. I got so much from this cute story. It started off slow but it hits with such an emotional punch. Learning how the two sisters would find their footing with one another is such an emotional rollercoaster. The relationship with Camden is more of a slow burn for me. Camden is very angry that Suda just up and left him years ago. He thought what they had was so much more and the shock of having her back in town makes him cold. It takes some warming up but he eventually can’t deny the chemistry between him and Suda. Sometimes distance and time doesn’t dim the love between two people. Suda Kaye definitely learns that flying free is not necessarily meaning leaving home. She puts in the work to show she is ready to give into what the heart truly wants. I definitely recommend this to fans that need a warmer story with an emotional punch. I hope Evie gets a story next. ~ Samantha
