I'm a bit blown away right now. I feel like Camilla was in this box and Laurelin Page just came and broke down every wall of that box and said, now you may see her. And I did. I felt like my eyes were opened to who she really was in a big way. In the Slay series, Camilla was not a side character I gave much thought too. I know she had a background that supported her brother in his series, but that's where it stopped for me. This book made me actually see what an incredible character she is. I know she had a background that supported her brother in his series, but that's where it stopped for me. This book made me actually see what an incredible character she is. It just felt so unexpected, all that pain she was hiding behind, the way she hid from life. I felt pulled in by her emotions so much that I could put my self in her shoes. I'm not one for reading about a sad tale like this but I got sucked in so quickly that it made her happily-ever-after so much more important to me. That's where Hendrix comes in. He was crucial to Camilla turning that corner. His character isn't as delved into as much because this is all about Camilla. What you do learn is enough to know just how much he needed her as well. You really felt his craving to make her his and to be the one to bring her that happiness. This book really speaks to what an exceptional writer Laurelin Page is. I'm amazed with how much depth was portrayed in a novella. The words used in this had impact and meant something. This was a wonderful addition to the Slay series.

Even with the short amount of pages the characters evolved so much and just created a perfect story, for lack of a better description. Everyone deserves a Hendrix Reid knocking around her swollen heart, pushing her, loving her, mending her broken soul. Slash is unique and torturous, and a snapshot into the spirit inside all of us, yearning to outrun our pasts and live and love in the present. Of course, the story has Paige’s signature carnal delights—shocking and passionate coupling that digs deep, expressing so much more than warm writhing skin. There’s Camilla, a fragile heroine on the cusp of an inevitable unraveling, and Hendrix, a rakish man with a tongue made of spun sugar and a huge heart buried under propriety and profession. However, with Slash, Laurelin Paige has moved her sexy little novella to a different level. She's created something very special. I LOVE THIS STORY. Slash begins with a clever photographic framing. Each chapter quotes precise terms for capturing and relating art, and the story unfolds under that rubric. That’s how Camilla Fassbender lives, under her own precise terms. As written she appears in control and of one shrouded mind, but the truth, as she admits to herself and us, is that she’s human. Her photographic career is a pretext to shield her shame and guilt. From the opening words, we KNOW she is going to come undone. What I didn’t know was how much I would love Hendrix, his deep affection and healing heart. This is how a recovery romance should read, with Laurelin’s ruminative flourishes and shocking tenderness at the least likely moments. The story has an animalistic feel to it, as though Camilla is caged or uncaged, all building to the “juxtaposition” lol and it works. Slash is a true romance and an absolutely superb piece of writing. Camilla’s story is jarring and ugly. This story is beautiful and inevitable. This is a sensual story, that begins with what you can see. But it doesn’t stay there long. Hendrix’s voice is a character here, and OMG does he have a way with words that sooth and ignite. I love that Camilla exists and we can watch her bloom beside a man who blesses her with patience and reverence, and at least nine hours of orgasms. Perfect! The true success of Slash is not just in its ability to relate the grim truths that live inside countless women, it’s in its heart. Whether she’s writing about trauma or happiness or the filthiest moments her lovers demand, Paige lends a realness and emotional joy to the weight of her words. That’s why the darkest parts of Slash work, and why the healing feels so real.

Camilla. We already met her - and heard most of her story - in her brother's books. She's a single mom. With a lot of baggage from her childhood and marriage. And even though we heard a lot of what happened to her in the previous books, I still felt that this novella was way too short. With lots of back-in-time chapters and a lot more about Hendrix. He didn't happen enough in this short book for my tastes. I also did not like those many photography details at all. Way too much of that for such a short story. This would've been a great love story. But it was just too short for me. And also ... when a book has the acknowledgements in the front - and I have to read everything in the front - and the author thanks her god in a whole little paragraph.... that's it for me. Sorry. I can't deal with that sh*t. I think I need to stop reading Laurelin's books - this god-thanking is just destroying any reading pleasure I might have gotten while reading. If you have to thank god - and you really don't in a romance - please do it in the back. That way I can at least try to enjoy the story first - and be mad at you later. SLASH was a cute, sad and sexy little view into the life and the start of the happy end of Camilla Fasbender. Read the #SLAY series to find out more about her! 💜 💜

For me, this felt and read more like a Camilla growth journey than a romance journey of two people. Yes, it’s a romance, but it is much more than that. The story touched me deep in my soul. The depth of what they have doesn't really shine through until almost the end, but it's brighter than a flashbulb. The way Hendrix revered her was exactly the delicacy I mentioned that she needed. Someone who would replace the memory of each scar with tender beauty and affection. He was perfect for her.

It was great to finally get more information about Camilla. She had a couple of rough periods in her life.... when she was with a foster family, and when she was married. She is somewhat an introvert who lacks the self-confidence to allow herself to shine bright. Enter the handsome photographer she previous met one time several months prior, and now he's pushing himself back into her world. While the attraction is there, she is afraid to move forward after everything that has happened in her past. He is a patient man though and willing to let her go at her own speed. He is a good man who is willing to do what it takes to get the person he wants. If you have read the Slay series, you will enjoy this book as much as those, but if you have not, this is a nice peek at what you can look forward to in that series. It's a short (about 100 pages or so,) read that will give you a little taste. Though, this book, while it does have some of the steam this author is known for, it is a little tamed down in comparison. It does have a heavier subject matter, and if you are new to the series, you don't find out all the secrets until near the end. There is mention of domestic abuse, that may be a trigger for some sensitive readers. It's written from her POV only. It's a well written story. It does have a slow build up, despite the two already 'knowing' each other (if only for the one night.) There is a darkness to it and a bit of sadness, as she goes through her inner dialog. Due to the subject matter, and the sexual content, this is suitable for mature readers.

He’s every bit of the practiced and patient photographer of wildlife that he’s built a renowned career on. Camilla is absolutely fascinating to him in every way and with his experience in observing wild animals, he approaches her with caution and confidence, knowing full well of her tendency to pull out the claws, run away and avoid exposing vulnerability. I loved how Hendrix knew exactly how much to push and when to stay present. Camilla’s history is raw and heartbreaking, but Hendrix sees the beauty of her survival and how she’s now thriving. Hendrix is a fine example of a man who can show women like Camilla how worthy and wonderful they are. Great addition to the Slay world.

We met Camilla Fastbender in the Slay series. Her's is not an easy story. It's full of pain and suffering. One brightside from the pain is her son Freddie. Finally though, she is finding her happiness, thanks to fellow photographer Hendrix Reid. “I want to kiss every place on your body you’ve been hurt. I want to kiss those places so many times that you remember them for that instead of anything before.” I was in tears as she told him of her pain and her scars. Scars he found beautiful. Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I often wonder how writers can say so much in the limited pages of a novella. Take one look at Laurelin Paige’s newest offering, Slash, and you realize it’s a master class in the form, much like the course taught within her story. Take one look at Laurelin Paige’s newest offering, Slash, and you realize it’s a master class in the form, much like the course taught within her story. Page after page, you find the heartrending, complicated story of Camila Fasbender, the sister of Edward Fasbender, Paige’s hero in her Slay series. The profession of truth that litters the pages of Slash overwhelms you in a way that feels both traumatic and essential. If I could give this novella a different title, it would be “The Persistence of Patience.” In that patience, Paige elaborates on some essential truths about life. What I know from reading Laurelin Paige’s booklist is her ability to create these alpha men who consume their heroines. Donovan Kincaid is still my FAVORITE alpha hero in all of romancelandia. Yet, her hero in Slash is nuanced. It could be that we aren’t treated to his point of view in Slash. Quite honestly, it doesn’t feel necessary. What you learn quickly from this story is the erotic nature of patience. Hendrix Reid’s capacity for waiting is his romantic superpower. Paige has crafted him with equal amounts of empathy, persistence, and intuition. These qualities might seem to emasculate him; they don’t. Instead, they match brilliantly with her heroine who requires the capacity of these qualities. Camila’s characterization is profound. Her being epitomizes trauma. And it feels necessary to read her story. The messages of Paige’s Slash reside in Camila’s portrayal. How do we live an abundant life after surviving it for so long? How do we become vulnerable so that we can be “seen” in our totality? How do we honor both the small and big moments of our life? How do we see our scars as more than their trauma? Over and over again, Paige’s articulation of Camila’s pain resonates and pushes against the scars of her readers, and it makes for a beautifully wrought, intentionally drawn story of healing. In her afterword, Paige explains that parts of Camila’s story didn’t need to be told in the pages of her novella, and I agree because the depth and gravity of Camila in this small space are pained enough that this shortened story form allows you, as the reader, to breathe through the difficulties of her story. Any longer, and I think it would feel like punishment, and her romance might be overpowered. Instead, the way that Hendrix loves Camila through her journey towards becoming vulnerable plays out exactly as it should. I found myself grabbed by Paige’s prose, thrown into Camila’s story, and upended by her truth. This is the art of Laurelin Paige’s Slash. Paige says it best in her Author’s Note: “When the world feels fragile and broken and unsure, I needed to believe that fragile and broken and unsure is still beautiful.” That is the essence of Camila’s story. It is also the truth that love will see you through your pain. Paige’s Hendrix shows us how to love broken people, how to love humanity. Underscoring this axiom is the art of Paige’s writing. And one can’t help but wonder if Slash isn’t an apt representation of Paige’s own art, rife with anointed words, carefully composed characters, and a story that reminds us that we all bear some hurt and there is a fellowship in that knowledge. That it simply takes someone else “authentically see[ing]” us to be “free.”

3.75 Stars Before the Slay Quartet had even concluded, I'd always hoped that Camilla would get a story of her own. I'd say that out of all of Laurelin's characters, she's the one who deserves a happy ever after the most - she didn't have a good childhood after the death of her parents, and she had an even worse marriage where the only good thing that came from it was her son, Freddie. I'd say that out of all of Laurelin's characters, she's the one who deserves a happy ever after the most - she didn't have a good childhood after the death of her parents, and she had an even worse marriage where the only good thing that came from it was her son, Freddie. When it was shown in the epilogue of Rising that she does get her own happy ending, I just about lost my mind in excitement at that news, and question after question was racing through my mind; Who is this man who's given her this happiness she so rightfully deserves? How did it happen? Why him? What did he do to win over her well-guarded heart? Now I went into this novella ready for a romance. I was ready for sex, and I was ready for love. What I wasn't ready for was what we actually got - a story that's not just a love story between a man and a woman, but rather a story of self-love; of growing comfortable in your own skin, letting go of the past that tears you down, and embracing the future that promises to lift you up and keep you free. Here we follow Camilla Fasbender as she agrees to teach an advanced photography course for a few weeks after her brother, Edward, convinces her to give it a try. However, she soon regrets accepting this job when she sees that one of her students is Hendrix Reid - a well-known wildlife photographer who Camilla had a one-night stand with months prior. She knows that he's not here to learn more about photography - he's a professional himself - but Camilla is not ready to open her arms and her heart to something serious after her disastrous marriage. But Hendrix is used to being patient when it comes to getting his shot - in more ways than one - and he's willing to wait however long it takes for Camilla to not just find the strength in herself to move on from her past and find her future in him, but to realise that he'll take on the pain of her past with her, and give her the happiness she dreams of having. I not only wanted more of him. I wanted more of me. The witty, confident me that I was with him. The me that he saw me to be. Were they one and the same? I wasn't sure, but I wanted them to be. And he was the reason I'd seen the possibility. If you've read the Slay Quartet, then you know what Camilla has been through in her past, and so it should come as no surprise whatsoever that Slash is not just a romance story where there's a little drama, pure romance, and a satisfying HEA. No. Slash is an emotional and intense story to read that does touch on some heavy topics that can be sensitive to some readers, so I have included a trigger warning below just so you're prepared for some of what is to come - in case it is a trigger for you. However, I must say that Laurelin did handle those topics well. I didn't think she would and maybe to some readers she won't, because when it comes to those topics, everyone has different experiences and opinions on them (myself included), and so not everyone will read this book and think that those topics were handled with justice. But in my eyes, Laurelin touched on them so gently that, even though the last two or so chapters were incredibly hard for me to read, I never felt triggered in any way whatsoever, and that only had me loving and respecting this author all the more. But it's here where I find myself stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to my thoughts and feelings on this novella, because as much as I absolutely adored this story and found it to be a brilliant, romantic, and gripping read that sucked me in from the very first chapter, I can't ignore the fact that I was not enjoying the pacing of this novella whatsoever. I don't know about everyone else, but I just felt as though some scenes and conversations could've had more to it, and that, at times, they were cut off too quickly and too abruptly for my liking, which made this story feel a little choppy to me. I also struggled to connect with Hendrix at first too, and I felt as though we weren't getting enough from him for me to really appreciate him not just as a love interest for Camilla, but as a character all of his own, which is why I've rated this novella 3.75 Stars. But putting those aside - which're just my own opinions and something not everyone will agree with - Slash was amazing as it was, and I just know that I'll be thinking about this story for days to come. If you loved Camilla in the Slay Quartet, then I truly don't think you will be disappointed with all that Laurelin delivers here for her and Hendrix in this novella. It's a quick story to read, is beautiful and memorable and incredibly impactful, and I cannot recommend it enough. Seven months earlier Camilla Fasbender met Hendrix Reid at a photography convention but ran out after a one-night stand, never to see Hendrix again. Teaching a photography class at the local college, Camilla will come face to face with the man who has starred in her fantasies and dreams, the man currently enrolled in her photography course Hendrix Reid. As Hendrix tries desperately to rekindle their romantic involvement, Camilla struggles with demons from the past, demons that continue to control her daily life. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Hendrix and Camilla, and the potential fall-out as Camilla reveals the truth as to why she feels the need to run and hide. SLASH is a fast paced, haunting and spicy story of revelations and reconnections; a second chance romance about a wounded woman struggling to move on with her life. He’s a game changer is a number of ways and the only person who sees through her carefully constructed facade, slashing through her lies and her secrets and refusing to allow her the space to push him away or even remove him entirely, which will prove exactly what he wants to be for her if she’ll only see beyond all that she’s been through and focus on their future not her past. Since I met Camilla, Edward’s sister, in the Slay Quartet, I had more than enough of her backstory to understand why she led the life she did and why she kept everyone at arm’s length. What I wanted more of, which is difficult in a novella, is the ins and outs of who Hendrix Reid was/is and just how well these two mesh together in what they offer one another. But I’ll just believe, like all of Laurelin Paige’s couples, that Camilla and Hendrix get everything they want and need in their life together. 4 Poison Apples

I loved this heartbreakingly beautiful romance. I have wanted more about Camilla after meeting her in the Slay series. She had worked hard to get back on her feet, leaving the nightmare of her past behind her with the help of her brother, Edward, and to build a good life for her son, Freddie, and herself. But the scars from her tragic past still haunt her, making it impossible for her to open herself up to love again. Until she meets Hendrix, a sexy american wildlife photographer in Paris. He is engaging and passionate and he made her feel witty and brave. Their heated discussions led to an explosive night of passion that they both wanted more of. But Camilla can't be vulnerable for anyone again, and runs out while he is asleep. Now he's found her again, and he's done giving her space. He enrolled in the photography class that she teaches and he wants her to know he is here to stay. He see's her intelligence, humor, and passion behind her scars. He is used to laying in wait for the perfect shot in the wild, so he is happy to wait patiently for Camilla. Camilla is both scared and excited about being pursued, but after so much pain, it is hard to come into the light and be completely exposed. This story was so beautifully written, making me feel all Camilla's emotions and struggles to trust and find strength in her vulnerability. Hendrix was so sweet and swoony in the way that he cherished her and helped her to feel whole again. I really wanted a HEA for Camilla, and this emotional, passionate, and steamy romance made me completely happy!

If you have read the other books, you know a little more but if you haven't that's fine too as you don;t really need the information in order to be drawn to the story. I love how human both of the characters are. I tend to mention in this in all of my reviews, and it's when I really can relate to a character, or characters, that a book grips me and when I am unable to relate that I find myself disengaged. No disengagement happened in this story, not at all. The push and pull between the characters, the way they related to one another, how drawn together they were while both not sure what the other wanted or would allow. All of it kept me turning pages and not wanting to put the book down. I enjoyed and recommend this title, for readers who are new to the series as well as for those like myself who have read all of the previous books.

Slash is a spin-off Novella of Laurelin Paige’s Slay Quartet and all I can say is wow. Camilla Fasbender, the sister of media mogul Edward Fasbenderm hasn’t had the easiest of lives. She had so much baggage which slashed my heart, but I became frustrated that she wouldn’t (or couldn’t) let some of it go after years of therapy. Maybe that will seem mean after you have read the novella, but it was how I felt. When Camilla and Hendrix met, they were enamored with each other. His patience with her and for her was remarkable, and he made me swoon. Hendrix was just an all round good guy which is what she deserved, but we don’t learn too much about him. His love and patience for Camilla mended my slashed heart. She took the first steps into being brave, into feeling and believing that she’s beautiful inside and out, but I wanted her progress when all we received was a snapshot of the progress. I wanted more, but I know that’s not possible since this is a novella. I enjoyed this novella and recommend it if you have read the Slay series (you can read this even if you have not read the Slay series), and if you haven’t read that series I encourage you to try it. *I received an advanced copy of this ebook for my honest review.*
