Tony Jankowski was a thug. Thrown out of his North Jersey home by an Italian mother who can’t take his bad behaviors any longer, he moves to a bustling town at the Jersey Shore where he drifts until he is imprisoned for drug possession and theft. After prison, Tony finds himself homeless, living in a tent in the woods by the Garden State Parkway, surrounded by the huge wea Tony Jankowski was a thug. Thrown out of his North Jersey home by an Italian mother who can’t take his bad behaviors any longer, he moves to a bustling town at the Jersey Shore where he drifts until he is imprisoned for drug possession and theft. After prison, Tony finds himself homeless, living in a tent in the woods by the Garden State Parkway, surrounded by the huge wealth of the beaches of the Jersey coast. An aspiring writer, Jankowski keeps a journal to chronicle his experiences as a homeless man. During his journey, see through Tony’s eyes the challenges of having no place to call your own. Tony witnesses both the best and the worst of human nature as he interacts with the merciful, ignorant, and the violent of society. He forms close friendships he never allowed himself to have during his previous life as a troubled young man and rediscovers his faith in God during his struggle to survive in the America of the twenty-first century. Ultimately evolving into a kind, sensitive, caring young man who leaves homelessness and begins a new life with the help of friends and a network of churches and advocates. All profits from book sales will go to Just B.E., a wonderful ministry providing the “basic essentials” to the homeless of the Jersey Shore.

I live at the Jersey Shore. My family believes in helping those in need and often we can be found helping the homeless in our area. They really do live in tents here since there is no shelter. Although, knowing what city shelters are like, I'm not sure if a shelter would be a place our homeless would use. With that being said, "I Am Tony," is an accurate fictional story about life as a homeless person at the Jersey Shore. Tony's experiences with the churches and food pantries could be 100% real. I found myself rooting for Tony - to stay sober, to understand God's forgiveness and of those he hurt, and to maintain hope in the darkness. James was such an endearing character - soft spoken, full of God's love, patient, and a calming presence during difficult times. My heart ached for him. I loved that the story was a bit personal narrative and part journal entries. Tony's story kept me turning pages wanting to see what was going to happen next, where he was going to end up, if he was going to make it. I do not want to give any spoilers away ... just know this is a story of loss, change, hope, perseverance, and most of all kindness.
