Everything from the dollar to health care to food distribution and housing must be reconfigured. New Orleans is largely undamaged with alpha werewolf King is coordinating witches, food supplies, housing and security. Star and band have taken refuge in New Orleans knowing that her sister’s kidnapper will obsessively try to reclaim possession. Scottish dragon Lachlan follows Star to New Orleans. He will protect her at all costs. She is his mate. I loved both the hero for his protectiveness and willingness to let the heroine lead. The heroine is a bit naive but trusts her pack to do their jobs. My only issue was tracking all the secondary characters, especially at the end. Perhaps because additional help in the final battle came from the Darkness series which I haven’t read. In the end it didn’t really matter because of the hea, but like others have said - I hope to read King’s hea soon. Absorbing, creative and heartening. I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share.

Star’s sister has been abducted and she and her pack mates are determined to rescue her and head to their safe house. Star and Lachlan are both Alphas of their packs and complement each other well. With two strong protagonists, this story line was bound to be exciting. Their characters are compelling, well-drawn, charming, and at times, funny. Their characters were three-dimensional and their goals were clear. The secondary characters were well-rounded and enhanced the story. The internal and external conflicts were well defined and the stakes were high. The prose was well-written, entertaining and engaging. I loved the writing style. The plot twists were believable, but not quite as unexpected as I would have liked. The world building is terrific. There are a few steamy scenes in the second half of the book. Overall, this was a fun and entertaining book that has depth to it. Themes include shifters, witches, vampires and humans existing in the same world, romance, abduction, rebuilding lives, family relationships, friendship, greed, power and much more. I recommend this to those that enjoy paranormal romantic suspense with plenty of action scenes and some depth to the underlying themes. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series as well as other books by this author. Many thanks to KR Press, LLC – Author Collective 20 and Katie Reus for a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley and the opportunity to provide an honest review. "You don’t give me orders. You are not my alpha…" "…I could be your Alpha in the bedroom." Star and Lachlan were both extremely likeable characters both feisty, and Alpha's of their own packs, it takes but moments for Lachlan to realise that they are also mates. I found his attempts at courting her endearing, and although reluctant initially it doesn’t take Star long to fall for his charms, a mutual enemy needs to be taken care of first though before they can go full steam ahead on the romance front. "You’re a feisty lass." I really enjoyed this one, especially King & Aurora’s connection which simmered alongside Lachlan and Star’s story. I really hope they get their own book at some point, because I think Aurora deserves full attention as a main character, what with getting over her experiences in captivity, but I also think King has a lot going for him too, and I would like to get into both of their heads more as they travel the path towards a full relationship. "I’m sorry for all you’ve been through." I love Katie’s PNR offerings and this series has the potential to be as great as it’s predecessor, I am eager for more books! I'm so happy that we are back into this world again. This is a spinoff of the Darkness series and I love seeing some of my favorite characters again. Especially the ancient dragon shifters. Plus, they are so old, they come off a bit quirky in today's world. Lachlan's intensity right from the very beginning had me sold. Espec I'm so happy that we are back into this world again. He proved he would do anything for her. That's exactly what I'm looking for in a hero. What Star was a mystery for most of the book. I did guess it, but I will admit I doubted my guess a couple of times. That just made it more fun. She was cool character. I don't normally like Alpha females but she was strong without being in your face about it. Plus she had some cool powers. I loved it and I want more. I'm glad this is the start of a new series. There are so many characters still to explore in this world.

I am so excited that this author has decided to take us back into this world! Dragon shifters are my jam but Ms. Reus’ dragons are pure perfection. Lachlan was obsessively protective of Star and another great example of my type of hero. Star was labeled “Alpha” which can often turn me off a heroine instantly. Not so here. She was sweet and caring but able to make the decisions necessary to protect her crew. There’s a bit of mystery here surrounding this heroine’s origins. While it isn’t terribly hard to figure out, I was still anxious to verify if my guess was right or wrong. There isn’t really any relationship drama here as this story revolves around a villain and his intentions. This scenario is perfect to showcase the interactions between Star and Lachlan. With a quick pace, plenty of action, a touch of wit, and some amazing characters we’ll be seeing more of, I found this to be just what I needed to relax into another world. Lachlan helped save Star's sister and has the hots for Star. Star wants to give in but is afraid if he finds out what kind of shifter she is that it won't be good for anyone. Drama, action, chemistry, and lots more are in this book. Several peeps from the Darkness series make appearances and help Star's family (family by choice, not necessarily blood) in defeating the bad guy. King has the hots of one Star's family. I can't wait to see what happens next, and hopefully we won't have to wait until the last book to get King's HEA.

If you love dragon shifters like me you'll understand why I jumped at reading this. It did not quite meet my, admittedly ridiculous expectations but I did enjoy reading about Star and Lachlan. Here are some points I noticed and wanted to point out: - Both main characters are supposed to be alphas of their pack. I didn't feel that either of them actually had what it took to be alpha of a pack in terms of leadership but they were still quite likable. -Another thing that bothered me a little: while Lachlan was an ancient who'd woken only a year ago from thousands of years in hibernation, his language was modern. Yes, this is PNR but I still expect a little bit of realism. -I loved the mystery around Star's animal although I guessed it quite early on. -The romance was as expected quite insta. I knew it was a shifter romance with a mating concept when I went in so I can't really complain about it. This new series ties into Katie Reus's DARKNESS series which I haven't read. Although you can definitely read this book as a standalone without feeling lost you may benefit from having read this author's other series. I may have loved ANCIENT PROTECTOR a little more if I had been familiar with the world. With all that being said, this was a quick, action-filled read that had me entertained while I was immersed in this world of shifters, vampires, witches and magic. If you are looking for a new PNR series to try, give this a whirl!

This is the first book in the Ancients Rising series, and it’s a spin-off of the Darkness series. However, you don’t have to read the Darkness series to fall in love with the characters and world of Ancient Protector. Star is a fantastic protagonist and leader, always thinking of her people before herself. She is selfless, strong, and powerful, and she’s well-respected. She is also a mystery. However, you don’t have to read the Darkness series to fall in love with the characters and world of Ancient Protector. Star is a fantastic protagonist and leader, always thinking of her people before herself. She is selfless, strong, and powerful, and she’s well-respected. She is also a mystery. There are many types of shifters – dragons, lions, wolves, and more, but Star’s shifter identity remains a secret through most of the story. The reveal is fantastic, and I loved finding out what she was. I knew it would be something powerful and rare, but I was surprised nonetheless. Lachlan is a wonderful complement to Star. He is an ancient dragon, newly awakened from hibernation. He has suffered much loss in his life, yet he still has hope. He is fierce in battle and protective of those he loves. Additionally, his views on women and equality are progressive and unexpected considering he is ancient and a clan leader. His devotion and loyalty to his people, Star, and other allies in the story is admirable. Plus, he’s a super-hunky and powerful alpha male! What’s not to love? The sisterly bond is one of my favorite aspects of the story. Star and Aurora have a beautiful relationship, and it is clear that they love each other very much. Star devotes more than a year of her life trying to rescue Aurora from the evil clutches of a greedy dragon shifter, and Aurora struggles emotionally after being held in captivity. Star is patient and encouraging with her younger sister and pushes her without being bossy and overbearing. They understand each other well, and they have both been through a lot. They are a wonderful support for each other, and I enjoyed the progression of their relationship. And, of course, there is the love story which is intense and strong. Star and Lachlan have a deep connection from the start, and though it is a bit insta-lovey, it still had a slow-burning feel. Lachlan knows from the first meeting that Star is his mate, but Star takes some persuasion. Used to keeping people at a distance, Star seems hesitant to let Lachlan get close. I liked that Lachlan had to work a bit to win over Star, and I liked that, though Lachlan is a possessive and dominant leader, he admires and supports Star’s leadership and independence. He is not looking to change her or control her. He wants a partner. The ending felt a bit rushed in comparison to the rest of the book. However, with the way things ended, I have a feeling that we’ll see more of the couple in future books. Some things were left open, like the relationship between Aurora and King, and, hopefully, those stories will be expanded upon in future books. I want to know more about Star’s crew as well. Those characters weren’t as dynamically developed as Star and Lachlan, but their personalities were still unique and interesting. Overall, this was a fun and well-paced story with great world-building, an interesting plot, and a wonderful romance. Thanks so much to Netgalley and KR Press for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. https://onebookmore.com/2020/06/24/ar...

And the wait and anticipation were so worth because Lachlan and Star are the perfect couple to kick off this new adventure. Smoldering? That was a thing, right? Because he had it in spades. “What happens if she doesn’t agree to go with you?” King asked. “Then in a week and a half, I shall kidnap her.” An what a journey it is, there is no slow build in this one, we jump right in into some kickass action! The opening scene snags us right in and I couldn’t stop reading in after that start. I absolutely adore the way we where presented to this new gang of supernaturals and I’m also beyond psyched to see again some of my fav Darkness peeps, like Cynara. Lachlan and Star, are the definition of fated mated, and if you follow my reviews you know that is my favorite trope, so these two couldn’t have been more amazing and perfect together. Both are so complex and passionate, loyal and strong, a true pairing of Alphas, and a match made in Heaven. Lachlan was the epitome of Alpha, in all his OTT protective and possessive deliciousness, and I adore every second of it, specially how unapologetic he was about how he felt for her, so swoon worthy! “The skies are free. If you want to follow after me, be my guest.” “I will.” His dragon would follow her to the ends of the earth. “I can carry you in my claws or you can ride on my back. Either way is acceptable.” “Your back it is.” “For the record, I would like you to ride me in other ways while we are both naked and—” He was glad she hadn’t known how to ride him. It meant that she had not flown with a dragon before. He would be her first. He also wanted to be her last. I don’t know how Ms. Reus does it, but I’m always in awe at the incredibly realistic – even in its supernatural nature – world building and enticing characters. Badass action scenes set in an enrapturing adventure, hilarious banter, deliciously smoldering chemistry in all the couple interactions, as well as smoking hot sexy times, all this topping of an epic love story. Every single time without fail, and Ancient Protector is the example, I’m not only completely immersed in the main couple’s love story, but also craving to know about every single one of the side characters, as well as rooting that we’ll see their own tales. Yep, this series is already utterly and deeply addictive, and I’m so here for it. That’s right, not only do I want the rest of the dragon’s story, but I NEED Aurora and King’s story ASAP!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 I dinnae care what you are. You’re mine, love. As my first read by Mrs Katie Reus, so also my first foray in her paranormal’s’ universe. As she has a note about an other series, I do suppose this one is related too with some of the visiting characters. My only reservation is I would have liked to know more about the fall period as the book is set before and after this changing event. Star and Lachlan are both two very likable characters, and while Star’s true identity is kept a secret until the very end, I figured it out very quickly. Star while young for a paranormal is a warrior in the soul, she acts like one and her team sees her as one. She bosses them around but always with purposes and rightfully. Lachlan is no young dragon, after millennia in sleep, he awakens from his chosen hibernation to a very different world from the one he once knew. Yet, it does not change the kind man he is. While Star refuses any entanglement by fear to seen only for her second half self, thus she tries to avoid Lachlan’s persisting courtship, scared of the consequences if she let herself fall for someone. When he knows he would readily to sacrifice anything for the one woman who brought him back to the living. It was a very entertaining and fast paced read, as most of the action took place in a short span of time. I loved the many species, and while I have checked who will be figured in the two next books, I hope Aurora/King and Axel and whomever will too have their story. 5 stars for this first in a series. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting my request for an arc of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion. Lachlan and Star’s relationship left me feeling warm and fuzzy. I also liked getting to know Star’s crew of misfits. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them in the books to come. I actually can’t wait to read the next book already. I’m hoping it will be about King and Aurora.

Ancient Protector is the first in the new paranormal romance spin-off series Ancient Risings by Katie Reus. This series is a spin-off of her Darkness series. You do not need to read the Darkness series to enjoy this book. I have not read it, but I believe several of the characters from the other series make an appearance in this book which would be a treat for fans. The book is well written with great character development. It has lots of action, with dragon fights in the air and more to keep the story interesting. Okay another hit of a series, I'm predicting! This is the opening book to this series and as sci-fi series it takes me a bit to get into it but I was pretty hooked almost from the beginning of this one. You'll love the characters and the descriptions of each person and who and what they are. Supernaturals abound in this book and I cannot wait to read more. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

She's not sure why he helped her but she's thankful but when he finds her while they're in hiding and says he wants his date now, she doesn't trust him. I can understand why she doesn't trust him after hearing what all she and her sister have been through especially with dragon shifters. But he more than proves that he can be trusted and she let's him into her circle where he worms his way into her heart little by little. When Oscar comes after her sister again, it's Lachlan and the another alpha named King that help them. This story had me on the edge of my seat. The action was great, the romance was so sweet and heartbreaking at times that it really made me feel for them. They had been through so much over the years. Star and Aurora have spent their whole lives protecting and hiding what type of shifter they are and while I tried to figure it out, I couldn't find out until it was revealed to me. It was a really fun twist that had me smiling. I really liked the interaction between King and Aurora and hope they get their own book in the future. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series now. Disclosure: I was given an ARC via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Katie Reus has gotten me back into reading shifter romances in a big way—particularly dragon shifters. And I couldn’t be happier. Ancient Protector is the first book in her new Ancients Rising series, which looks promising. I loved the action, suspense, romance, worldbuilding, and how the importance of family comes through so clearly in the story. Like Reus’ other books, the novel is full of secrets, twists, turns, and surprises that will keep readers glued to the pages in suspense dying to find Katie Reus has gotten me back into reading shifter romances in a big way—particularly dragon shifters. And I couldn’t be happier. Ancient Protector is the first book in her new Ancients Rising series, which looks promising. I loved the action, suspense, romance, worldbuilding, and how the importance of family comes through so clearly in the story. Like Reus’ other books, the novel is full of secrets, twists, turns, and surprises that will keep readers glued to the pages in suspense dying to find answers, including what kind of supernatural Star and Aurora are, why Star and Lachlan share a strange connection and sense of familiarity, and why Oscar is so determined to possess Aurora? Ancient Protector starts out low key enough with our heroine Starling (Star), a world renown singer/rock star preparing for a concert and celebrity auction at a powerful Alpha dragon’s estate. But it was more than just another performance for Star and her band. It was the fruition of a years in the making plan to rescue her sister Aurora, who has been kidnapped by Oscar and has been held prisoner at his estate for a year. Lachlan is an alpha dragon recently awakened from hibernation and drawn to Star first by her beautiful voice, which calms his dragon and brings him peace, and only more intensely as he learns all he can about her. For reasons he can’t explain, he seeks her out at the auction and bids on her. When Aurora’s rescue appears it might fail, Lachlan helps them escape by joining them in the ensuing firefight with Star’s pursuers. Several weeks later the world changes for supernatural beings and humans as wicked dragons kill billions of humans and supernaturals and wipes out much of the world while attempting to take it over. Star, Aurora, and her band flee to New Orleans, which was not totally destroyed by the dragon attacks and is being rebuilt by an alpha wolf and his pack. Once he’s able to find her, Lachlan follows them there just to be near her. Vividly lush description brings the devastated world and the characters off the pages and to life. The novel has a diverse cast of characters, who are well-developed, as are their motivations and interactions with the other characters. Star’s band is a group of misfit shifters who have known each other since childhood. They are ride-or-die, which is why they are more than willing to sacrifice and put their lives on the line to rescue Aurora. More than a band—they’re family—a central theme in the novel. Lachlan went into hibernation after losing his mate. He never expected to have a second chance at having one, but he cannot stay away from Star, especially when someone attacks her. Much to her displeasure he declares himself her protector and won’t leave her side. Star wants to be cold and uninterested in Lachlan but excites her. She’s also been having strange dreams of herself with a faceless man in the past, that feel real. King, the alpha who has taken on the burden of rebuilding New Orleans is intriguing. He’s young for an alpha and seems burdened by the responsibility that he willingly took on himself. Nevertheless, he’s committed to achieving his goal and never shirks his responsibility despite push back from supernaturals and humans making things more complicated and difficult for him. King is immediately drawn to Aurora, who is having some trouble healing and readjusting to life after her year of captivity. She is also keeping something important from her sister. The world-building is gradual, as the author adds pieces bit by bit without information drops that slow down the pacing of the story. Although, some information was mentioned by characters about how the world in general was faring now, I would have liked just a little more specific detail about just which parts were totally destroyed and others that escaped that fate like New Orleans. I think it would increase the stakes in showing just how small the world has become to make humans, and all manner of supernaturals—witches, vampires, wolfs, dragons, and other shifters—have to live and work together to rebuild the world and for their very survival. With all the tension and competing agendas, lifestyles, worldviews, and power grabs likely to occur between the different species—not to mention the personal baggage of the induvial characters—I cannot wait to see where this series takes us. Ancient Protector gets the Ancients Rising series started with an exciting, amusing, suspenseful, action packed, steamy romance about the things we will do for family, the importance of family, and the courage it takes to risk it all for a second chance at love. Review posted on Got Fiction? book blog This book is a spin-off from her Darkness series and I’m so glad! I wasn’t ready to leave that world behind! Buckle in, this review will be long. Some background: At the end of the last series, dragons were outed to humans. This then prompted all the other Other to come public as well. Vampires, shifters of all kinds, you get the idea. This book starts slightly before, then takes place a few months after. Star is a pop star. Not just a pop star, the pop star. The biggest. And she’s getting ready to play a very important show. She’s auctioning off a date with herself for charity, but the show is about more than her career and more than the charity. One dragon bids on her and he bids a huge amount of money. She almost wishes she could stay and have that date but she has another mission in mind. And it doesn’t involve the sexy Scottish dragon. Her sister was kidnapped by a different dragon and has been held captive by him for about a year. This show she’s playing is legit, but for Star and her bandmates, it’s a rescue mission. They’re retrieving her sister Aurora and nothing can stop them. Not even a huge dragon and his clan. Not even two huge dragons and their clans. Lachlan is an ancient. He’s recently come out of hibernation and when he heard Star sing, he knew she was his mate. He plans on finding her, but first he needs to learn about this new world he’s woken into. When he hears Star will be performing at a charity event, he knows that is his chance. Moments after he bids on Star, she bails. He follows her and while she’s escaping, they both wind up showing their powers, thus outing themselves to the world, which winds up collapsing shortly after. It takes him almost two months to make it back to his mate’s side, and he knows how to get close to her. He wants his date. Fast forward a couple of months or so and while the world is grappling with not only what it means that humans are not alone, but that someone tried to take out all major cities and governments, and we see Star and Aurora settling in New Orleans. A wolf shifter (one you’ll recognize from the previous series) has started to rebuild New Orleans and to try to organize the area. However not all Other are okay with him running things. There is unrest amongst some groups, and Star for the most part is just trying to get back to normal. But her new normal is about to change. Star is floored when her sexy Scottish dragon appears in New Orleans asking her for a date, and yet she finds she can’t say no. In fact, she doesn’t want to say no. The two of them have major chemistry and while Lachlan is making no bones about wanting Star, she’s running scared. Meanwhile…he still doesn’t know what she is. He’s assuming she’s some sort of shifter, or even half-demon, but no one knows. No one except her closest friends. And while he doesn’t care, I loved seeing how she confounded everyone, even him. I enjoyed watching Star figure herself out. While Lachlan is ancient, thousands and thousands of years old, Stars is in her twenties. She’s Alpha of her pack, but she’s also Alpha with a capital A. Even Lachlan’s brother can’t hold her gaze for long, and he’s almost as old as Lachlan. There's a lot of mystery surrounding Star. But Star has always been about protecting her identity and that of her sister. With her sister slowly healing, maybe Star can start focusing on herself and what she wants, not just what’s best for her pack. I don’t want to ruin what Star is, or what’s been going on in the background, but this is a great start to a new series and I for one can’t wait for more. I’ve peeked ahead and it looks like Lachlan’s brother will get the next book. You guys, we need more magic in the world, and Katie Reus is making that happen. Keep an eye on this series, you’re going to love it. ***Review copy courtesy of the publisher via Netgalley

Lachlan is an ancient dragon, alpha of a clan in Scotland, recently awakened from his hibernation. He bids a million dollars for a date with Star at a celebrity auction and follows her to New Orleans where he intends to woo her and show her he’s a dragon worthy of mating her. Ancient Protector is the first in a new paranormal romance series; however it is a spinoff from, or rather continuation of, Ms. Reus’s wonderful Darkness series. In the conclusion of the final book in that series, Darkness Rising, the world was turned upside down when dragons fought to dominate the world, killing millions and alerting humans to the presence of supernatural beings. Ancient Protector kicks off the Ancients Rising series with a romance set in this new world, with supernaturals and humans working to rebuild. Ancient Protector works as a first-in-a-series and can be read without having enjoyed the Darkness series. The romance between Star and Lachlan is a fated mates situation, which is par for the course with Ms. Reus’s world. However, there is a twist (which I won’t spoil) that adds to their story, making it unique. I enjoy that they take the time (albeit short time) to develop a bond and friendship even though they are drawn together. Star is reluctant to trust Lachlan, so he earns her trust, making their connection more powerful and meaningful. While the story is entertaining, I was a bit shocked at how easily everyone is adjusting only weeks after the devastating events from the previous series. While we don’t ever see the world from a human’s POV, I’m a bit surprised that everyone and everything is pretty good, and the world is not dark or apocalyptic. However, it works for the series, especially if one is not familiar with the previous books. My biggest “issue” is that the author makes us wait until the climatic scene of the book to reveal Star’s “inner beast,” dragging out the mystery to a point that it becomes distracting to the story (and I’d already figured it out). Overall, Ancient Protector is a promising start to a new series and an enjoyable addition to the Darkness world. This new spinoff looks like it will focus on a new group of characters, but there are several familiar ones, too. My Rating: B- Liked It, but I had a few small issues Review copy received from Netgalley Originally posted at That's What I'm Talking About

As usual, this author gives us an unwavering, jealous-possessive, alpha protective hero who will do anything for the heroine, which makes him absolutely perfect in my eyes. Ancient Scottish dragon shifter Lachlan sensed a special connection with Star, the famous singer leading lady, even before he laid eyes on her, folks. Not surprisingly, a big reveal is made near the end that was pretty obvious was going to occur. It certainly helped confirm why. Star also happens to be hiding a special secret of her own that comes in verra handy more than once throughout fight scenes with other villainous dragon shifters. The story centers around a rescue then bringing down a bad guy so the main couple can move on to a HEA, which a common backdrop for this author. I’m assuming the next book will continue with Star’s sister, Aurora, and King, alpha wolf shifter king of the New Orleans jungle, starting a relationship in the next sequel. But who knows. They might just end up conveniently pairing up as a sub romantic plot couple. This author has proven she can juggle more than one couple at a time in her story lines. I’d actually like to see Ms. Reus venture out of her normal routine scenarios featuring animal shifters and/or personal security team characters to other areas (i.e. doctors, lawyers, firefighters, etc.). I do always enjoy her back and forth banter and love connections between characters you truly like and want to wind up together. I did lower my rating for what I considered a plot hole regarding the connection we were expected to just go along with regarding the hero's love history. I understand the hinted at concept, but just felt it was thrown in so we wouldn't question who he loved the most. Oddly, I can't fully explain why it bothered me. It just did. I feel a little guilty I wasn't just relieved. Likely because I needed a better explanation of "why/how". I hope I've confused you with these statements, because I don't want to give away spoilers. Not to worry though, because you will quickly pick up on this element very early on in the book. I have not read any books of the previous Darkness series this one spins off of and the author did a good job explaining the pertinent information. Fans of the previous series will apparently see some familiar faces based on what I saw on Goodreads. I was captivated by this rich, intricate world of all kinds of supernatural beings and hybrids. The characters all have quirky and interesting personalities to go along with their various shifter traits. It was a fun escape for me and I am looking forward to the other books in this series...and I am hoping we get some more with King too.
