Do you like honored, charming thief stories? Nope, I’m not talking about Robin Hood or box office disaster of Taron Egerton (thankfully he got rid of tight pants and wore more colorful clothes to be a rocketman!) And of course I’m not talking about Steve Mc Queen’s Thomas Crown (and my grey cells already erased the images of Pierce Brosnan’s Thomas Crown) I’m talking about a brand new hero: Here comes MICHAEL MAVEN: This man hates women beaters, unnecessary violence and lives with ethical rules. We have a safecracker, charismatic thief on our menu: not so slowly cooked, fast paced, full of action, gore, grim and violent parts at your service. He is a thief but he has principles. He never hurts people and one day, he’s hired to steal rare coin, he hears owner of the coin and a very attractive woman are coming into the apartment. So he hides himself into closet. And surprise, the very attractive woman is also femme fatale and very dangerous killer. She kills the man and wants the coin for herself. Poor charming thief runs for his life but puts himself very deadly position and of course all of his loved ones are also in great danger now! This means he has to accept very thrilling job to crack a notorious cartel boss’ safe in Miami. Aren’t you still interested? Come on, it’s really fast pacing and entertaining reading! I visualized this as another sequel of Mission Impossible! Maybe Tom Cruise should be retired and John Krasinski takes over this role (with the very big height difference) We need a real action star because we don’t have a regular thief! We have super human, ultra lucky man who defeats grim reaper so many times! He can really kick asses, dodging bullets, saving his throat from being slushed and deals with very inhuman wild creatures (the worst kind of bad men you may hardly imagine) I didn’t expect something masterpiece or a big espionage, great scheme! This was easy, fast, riveting, entertaining page-turner! I insist it should be turned into a movie! The cliffhanger at the end was a smooth touch. So it deserves my four satisfying, heart throbbing, thrilling stars. Michael is the anti-hero with a heart and morals, he does not believe in killing anyone in the course of his 'work', a film buff, he channels his ill-gotten gains through the movie theatre he owns. He steals to order for his boss, Elizabeth Rose, so when she informs him of his latest job, to steal a rare coin, a 1343 Edward III florin, recently bought by Raymond Hemsworth, a wealthy American hedge fund manager, he begins his meticulous and detailed planning for the heist. However, it all goes to hell in a hand basket when Hemsworth unexpectedly returns home with a stunningly beautiful woman in tow. Maven hides, but to his horror, he watches the woman kill the hedge fund manager, proceeding to steal the coin from the safe. This is too much for him, but he underestimates her phenomenal fighting abilities as she gets away with the coin. The book opens in a shocking manner, with Michael drinking at his favourite Alistair's Pub, run by his closest friend, Jimmy, when a woman catches him unawares and cuts his throat. At this point, the narrative goes back 12 days, unveiling the events that led to the culmination of this horrifying moment. Maven goes into overdrive to find out who the woman is, deploying the expertise, resources and knowledge of Jimmy, Elizabeth Rose, and hires former NYPD cop, Jerry 'Doc' MacIntosh, now running a lucrative private investigation business. It turns out she is a deadly Ukrainian assassin for a major player of the Sinaloa cartel, Luis 'El Cerdo (The Pig)' Alvarez, a Chicago crime boss. With his family and friends under threat, Maven is forced by Alvarez to carry out the heist of a lifetime at the home of a rival cartel's boss in Miami, Florida. Maven is going to need all his wits and his close circle of friends to survive, knowing that even if he succeeds in the heist, there is no way Alvarez is going to let him live. Wick writes a pulsatingly riveting thriller, mired in the midst of the horrors of the murderous, torturing cartels that thrive in the climate of fear they create. Maven finds himself caught between the terrors of the infighting between the cartels, with the FBI, in the form of Special Agent Rebecca Browning wanting his help in putting Alvarez behind bars. The author has created a colourful and charismatic central protagonist in Michael Maven, a man that the reader will unquestionably root for, the oh so human ethical criminal. This is a wonderfully entertaining thriller with its nail biting tensions and suspense, set in great locations. I understand this is the first in a series, leaving me greatly anticipating the next in what promises to be a stellar series. Many thanks to St Martin's Press for an ARC.

In fact, the thief, a beautiful woman, enters the apartment while Michael is there, with the coin's owner. She proceeds to kill the innocent man, while Michael watches from his hiding place. When she takes the coin from the safe and attempts to leave the apartment, Michael can't sit idly by while she walks away with it. He has put a lot of effort into this night and will not let some random lady ruin it. A viscious struggle ensues. Michael, though shaken, believes the night to be a wash, until the night she finds him at his favorite local watering hole. Maven barely makes it out of that encounter with his life. Now he is on the radar of her employer, a sadistic drug lord known as El Cerdo, who needs Michael to perform a job for him. Unfortunately, Michael doesn't really have a say in the matter. He needs to do what El Cerdo demands, or else risk not just his life, but the lives of those he cares about most. Michael's new mission finds him in Miami, pairing up with the woman who tried to kill him, as well as other employees of El Cerdo. He has under a week to steal back a valuable notebook from the home of the head of a rival cartel. Safecracker is action-packed from page one. It truly reads like a movie and I found it to be quite addicting. I enjoyed Michael, as a character, a lot. He was rugged, charming and skillful; three great attributes for a leading man. While this isn't the type of book I would generally gravitate towards, I did have a lot of fun reading it and would recommend it to others. Thank you so much to the publisher, Thomas Dunne, for providing me with a copy of this to read and review. From the fantastic Epilogue, I am assuming this will not be the last we see of Michael Maven. I would absolutely pick up more books following his character if they are published.

Great action thriller! Michael, our main character, is a thief by profession but also manages to be honest and ethical in lots of other ways. I really enjoyed getting to know his quirks - although he has the typical hard exterior, his level of intelligence and thought processes reminded me of an Ocean’s Eleven type escapade. Having followed into the family “business,” Michael Maven is a safecracker who has never met a safe he couldn’t crack, he is an artist who takes pride in his work, but the night he witnessed a murder would send him into a world of murder, mayhem and sadistic drug lords who will stop at nothing to have their way. Now a pawn whose life is only as good as his ability to crack a safe, Maven will have to use all of his talents to stay one step ahead of two powerful crime bosses and a beautiful assassin who has him in her sights. I loved the action, the dialogue, even the more grueling parts, but most of all, I loved the characters. Michael proves there is honor among thieves, believes there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed, but knows when to play the game, especially when his life is on the line. Fabulous bad guys, truly rotten and vile, an assassin who is as much a victim as a killer and a twisted storyline to die for! I see an amazing future for Ryan Wick and his brilliant storytelling! The book starts out in a startling way--with Michael dying from a slit throat on the floor of a NYC pub. How did this come to be?? The story then backtracks to twelve days earlier when Michael is the midst of a home burglary. Later he meets with the woman who arranges the fencing of stolen goods for him and she tells him about a very rare coin, a 1343 Edward III florin, which is momentarily being kept in a wealthy man's safe in a NYC apartment, the theft of which should be a breeze for Michael. And it is...until the unexpected happens: the man returns home early, bringing a sexy woman with him. It looks as though Michael will have to endure watching the couple engaging in sex but the beautiful woman is not what she seems and Michael finds himself fighting for his life. One thing leads to another in this action-packed story and Michael becomes entangled with some very despicable people and is given an assignment he cannot refuse. I'm not sure I really liked this character--as I said, he's an an antihero, a lifelong criminal following in the family business, but he does have certain scruples. His involvements make for an exciting read, but be prepared for violence and gore. Action movie script material here for sure! There were a lot of peripheral characters that I had a hard time keeping track of but it didn’t take away from the storyline for me. There were also a lot of historical references that could set this up for prequel and it certainly ended on a great note for a sequel! Safecracker, aka Lawbreaker on the copy I received, is an accomplished debut novel - and hopefully the start of a series - about an honourable thief forced to pull off an impossible burglary for a Mexican drug lord. I’m generally avoiding new authors on NetGalley while I get my shelves under control but I had received a nice email from the publisher asking if I would like to read it... I am so very bad at saying no, but have no regrets! I am so very bad at saying no, but have no regrets! I’ve rather overdosed on American thrillers recently, and am a bit weary of psychotic gangsters all trying to outdo each other for barbaric sadism, so didn’t enjoy it as much as I might’ve, but that’s not the book/author’s fault so it’s not affecting my rating. Michael Maven is a professional thief based in New York, who has been commissioned to steal a rare coin from an investment banker. Surprised in the act by the early return to his apartment of the mark, with a beautiful woman, he hides in a cupboard and is shocked to witness his murder. When he realises she too if after the coin, he tries in vain to stop her - and then she comes after him. Barely surviving, he tries to track her down but instead finds himself forced by a vicious gangster to commit another burglary - or everyone he cares for will be killed. This started brilliantly, with Michael describing having his throat slit in his favourite bar, so I was immediately hooked to know how he manages to survive. Unfortunately after this is resolved the pace drops off a bit and it follows a fairly typical heist plot line. The last quarter ramps up the action however and I liked the ending, with an epilogue that presumably leads us straight into a sequel - which I’d definitely be keen to read. Michael is an engaging hero, and there’s a good support cast of interesting side characters. It is fairly violent and there are some pretty unpleasant torture references if you’re of a sensitive disposition. It’s well written and not overly long. My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC which allowed me to give an honest review. [If anyone can explain the significance of the last four lines, referring to the cuckoo clock, either without spoilers in a comment, or in a DM, that would be much appreciated!]

Expected publication date: August 11, 2020 “Safecracker” is the debut novel by screenwriter and director, Ryan Wick. It is very evident from the beginning of this novel that the writer is familiar with Hollywood movies, because “Safecracker” comes in hot and stays that way, playing out just like a summer blockbuster. Michael Maven is a professional thief, known for his stellar safe cracking skills, honed in childhood at the hands of his parents, both thieves themselves. His latest job, however, will take Michael to a new level of danger and espionage. He has been contracted to steal a ledger, from a Mexican drug boss. If he doesn’t do so, everyone Michael cares about will be killed. And if he does…..well Michael is sure he won’t survive the journey home. This is not a novel I would’ve picked up on my own, as it is normally not my cup of tea. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the pulse-pounding, heart-in-my-throat, edge-of-my-seat action that ran through this entire novel. There was never a dull moment, and Wick writes so well from the protagonists’ point of view that I was actually cheering for the thief throughout the novel- I wanted him to succeed. “Safecracker” is well-researched (let’s hope Wick’s research was legit and above board) and his characters are well developed. A gripping action novel, where the ending tied up all the loose ends but still left a hint of something more (this novel is the first in a series). For a debut novel, “Safecracker” is a stellar hit. I look forward to the follow ups in this series and I hope Wick continues to provide the same pulse-pounding Hollywood action in his future novels!

Otherwise we would have missed a darn good story. Michael isn't just a thief, he steals per instructions and it's for extremely valuable items. This was a case of everything going perfectly right on a job until it all went to heck in a handbasket. As a debut novel this one was very special. Author Ryan Wick hasn't tried to make Michael into anything but a regular person with some highly developed skills he needs for his career. The characters surrounding Maven are developed just to the point they needed to be for logical, common sense support while stopping short of super-human status. The web of intrigue got more and more intricate as the hunt for the assassin and the stolen coin became wider and took off in directions not hinted at in the beginning of the story. I must say, I really enjoyed "learning" so much about good, bad or mediocre safes and locks and that bracelet Michael wears is absolutely incredible. Not much I can do now but wait patiently for another story. Surely this is going to be a series, right? Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Thomas Dune Books for an eGalley of this novel.

When he learns that the wealthy owner of the coin will be attending a splashy event, he puts his considerable expertise to use to let himself into the guy's apartment and open the safe. This time, though, turns out to be a worst-case scenario; just as he's about to snatch the coin, he hears the apartment door open. Uh, oh, he thinks - the man has come home early. That's bad enough; but the situation quickly becomes more complicated because he's brought with him a beautiful woman. Getting out without being detected (hopefully with the coin in hand) might have been possible, but escaping the notice of two people - who have just entered the bedroom where Michael is hiding in the closet just isn't likely to be a happening thing. As Michael ponders his next move, though, the woman murders the man as he watches, horrified, through the closet door slats. When she grabs the coin from the safe, though, his terror turns to anger: How dare she take what was meant to be his? In the process of trying to stop her, Michael - who is trained in martial arts - is injured and she gets away with the coin. Still ticked off, he puts Liz and other friends to work trying to track her down. When they meet again, it's not under the best circumstances, shall we say - and the time after that is even worse. Now, Michael is ordered by a nasty drug lord to break into the safe of his rival - the leader of a competing cartel - in Miami. It's an order he can't refuse lest members of his family and friends will die. And as if it were possible to make matters worse, he's forced to team up with - you guessed it - the woman he watched murder the owner of the aforementioned rare coin. The rest of the book follows Michael's efforts to get the cartel guy's job done without getting himself or anyone else killed; from that point on it's anyone's guess who will emerge triumphant (although since this is the first in a series, readers certainly can expect that the hero will live to see another day, no matter what happens to him here). The devil is in the details, as they say, and how it all goes down kept me on the edge of my seat from that point on. Aside from being a good, action-packed story, I must say one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much is that it's highly reminiscent of another favorite series of mine: The Burglar Who by Lawrence Block. The character there, burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr owns a bookstore, not a theater, nor does he usually get embroiled in situations quite as dangerous as this book's Michael Maven. But everything else, including the writing style, brought back happy memories of the Block works - as well as happiness that I've found a new series to love. Now, I can't wait to read the next one in this series (scheduled for release next year, or so I've read). Bring it on!

One of the best books I've read in quite a while. If you enjoy hard-boiled, thrilling, gun-ho thrillers you can't miss here. The only disappointment here is it wasn't another 500 pages long. Good guys and plenty of menacing actors. Fast paced and gruesome in parts, but this only enhances the ride. Can't wait until his next effort. One of the best books I've read in quite a while. I really can't say too much more because I do not want a single spoiler to ruin your day but I am dying to talk about this book!! Just know that I really enjoyed it, highly recommend it, respect the writing and am eagerly awaiting more from Ryan Wick!!! Little confusion as I believe the updated release date was last week on August 11, 2020 but was originally to be published December 25, 2021.. so not quite sure when it is coming out! Thank you to NetGalley and author Ryan Wick for this temporary, digital advance review copy for me to read and devour constantly until I got to the very end! As always, my reviews are voluntary and my opinions are my own.

This debut work is beyond words as we go along on a thief's journey that ends in murder! Yet, this is no ordinary thief, this is a 'Safecracker' with skills to pay the bills. Can you imagine surviving a throat slashing, a kidnapping, an undertaking as enormous as stealing from the Mexican drug lord and ending with surviving a shoot out? Reminds me of the cat with nine lives only this cat has 10 and refuses to give up! Maven was an interesting character by all senses and surely kept readers engaged with his non stop heart pounding yet terrifying action. It comes down to cracking the safe of a rival drug lord or else waving goodbye to those he loves but with a twist as even if the mission is complete Marvel still may lose. Outwitting two highly operable crime bosses while outplaying the woman known as his new partner in crime using every tool at his disposal. Well, darn right this is a fab new read and I hope this review finds you well. Thank you to Ryan and his publisher for this superb debut from an author that's sure to be on my top readers list.

We recieved this book in a Goodreads giveaway, and I enjoyed it very much. I got so excited about it, I read it in one night. The book was dramatic, realistic, and fast moving, coming together in a hard hitting climax that's over the edge. Safecracker explores the deep underworld of being a yegger, with all the corruption and danger involved. Well recommended! We recieved this book in a Goodreads giveaway, and I enjoyed it very much. 4.5 stars! Thanks to Netgalley for giving me this ARC. A safecracking burglar is called to the big leagues to pull off the impossible, steal from a cartel. This book is full of action, suspense, and lots of page-turning cliffhangers. Our hero and Katarina make a great team, eventually. A good, quick read for heist lovers.

After picking up a couple of books lately that I could not seem to get into, it was wonderful to find a book that I didn't want to put down! I found myself needing to get up and do things but saying "just one more chapter". It was suspenseful and had just the right balance of pleasant and unpleasant outcomes so that it was not predictable. I really look forward to more from this author! Thank you St. Martin's Press for the ARC that I won through a Goodreads giveaway. I greatly appreciate it! Safebreaker is one heck of a thriller action plot that involves murders, lies, and betrayals. The author focuses on one protagonist (thief) and develops his character. Everyone else who is near him plays a role but he is the star in the plot. A simple job of stealing a coin becomes more complicated as his life collides with murderers. This book is a must read! The only con to me is that I wish it involved an ending showing how Katrina is living.

Thank you to Netgalley and St Martins Press for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. I agreed to give it a shot but it was one I had bypassed many times when I saw it on the site. I guess I should listen to people more often when they tell me they think I might like a certain book because she definitely got me on this one. Safecracker had me hooked from the very first sentence, actually. The action starts right away and continues throughout the entire book. It was a fast paced and easy to read book that I did not want to put down. I can always tell when I am really enjoying a book because it goes so fast. This one only took a couple of days and now I am really hoping they come up with a sequel. Because there could for sure be a franchise opportunity here. I would defintely read any future book from this author.

Aside from some confusion over the title (the ARC I recieved wasa titled "Lawbreaker", which I assume will be the published title, although I much prefer Safecracker) I very much enjoyed this rollicking thriller in what I hope is the beginning of a series featuring Maven. Without giving away too much, Maven is an expert thief, especially skilled at breaking into impenetrable safes. (A note to the squeamish: the book has some rather detailed descriptions of violence. not for the faint-hearted. Unlike many thriller wannabes, this book is quite well written and moves along briskly. I look forward to a long series, especially if Katrina makes another appearance. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in advance of publication.

Fabulous debut novel and Book #1 in a series about an almost fearless and humane thief. His father (also a thief) is in prison but Michael Maven has so far stayed alive and has not been caught. This book will keep you glued to the pages so clear the decks. You won't want to stop reading once you start. Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press for the invitation to read this book and the Author for his incredible writing. Bring on Book #2.
