Tom Scioli's mind-bendingly brilliant Transformers Vs GI Joe did end up by dragging in My Little Pony too, but this doesn't follow on from that, or indeed from anything in particular; it goes so far as to open with a very obvious warning by having a comics-reading pony complaining about how crossovers seldom properly fit the continuity of either component title. Instead, this series takes the very sensible approach of just chucking a bunch of giant robots into Equestria, and then letting various Tom Scioli's mind-bendingly brilliant Transformers Vs GI Joe did end up by dragging in My Little Pony too, but this doesn't follow on from that, or indeed from anything in particular; it goes so far as to open with a very obvious warning by having a comics-reading pony complaining about how crossovers seldom properly fit the continuity of either component title. Instead, this series takes the very sensible approach of just chucking a bunch of giant robots into Equestria, and then letting various creators do vignettes of the ensuing meetings, rather than straining after some epic plotline. Yes, I realise I did just apply the word 'sensible' to a Transformers/My Little Pony crossover, and no, I won't do it again. Thus we get stuff like Shockwave interrupting Pinkie Pie's TV cookery show, Spike teaming up with Grimlock, or Fluttershy insisting Soundwave can't be all bad because he has pets. Either the sheer incongruity of that appeals, or this one probably isn't for you. I think my favourite may have been Rarity and Arcee versus Starscream, just for how obviously the pair of them 'admire' each other. The classic useless sapphic dynamic is so much less frustrating when failure to do anything about it can be justified by one of them being 30 times the size of the other, never mind whether they'd have compatible apparatus.

IDW has done a number of these Transformers crossover titles with varying success and I figured this would be more of the same fluff. However, the decision to craft this mini-series as a series of short stories of different encounters between the Ponies and the Cybetronians actually made a lot more sense versus just bringing in some convoluted plot regarding how they get dragged to Equestria then some effort to defeat a big bad plan that the bad guys cook up. Instead, we got different great spotlight stories that kept the focus on the characters instead of a big plot-heavy scenario that certainly focused on having a lot of fun without needing to bring in questions of continuity or what have you. And even though things were bookended by the needed stories to bring them to Equestria and eventually send them home, it still felt pretty reasonable and easy to understand. I enjoyed this way more than I had expected to.

The moment I saw this existed, I knew I had to have it. Given that Hasbro owns both the Transformers franchise and the My Little Pony franchise, I suppose a crossover should have been inevitable... but I still never thought that they would have the guts to do it. Well, they did -- and the result is highly enjoyable, incredibly silly, and surprisingly good, and will leave fans of either franchise with a huge grin on their face by the end. In the land of Equestria, Queen Chrysalis seeks to overthrow the rule of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna by summoning changelings from another universe. Thanks to both her spell and a faulty space bridge, the impossible happens -- Autobots and Decepticons are yanked from Cybertron and dumped in this colorful land of ponies and magic! But despite their obvious differences, Twilight Sparkle and Optimus Prime join forces as unlikely allies... and soon the Mane 6 (and Spike) will make their own friends among the Autobots and even the Decepticons, and unite to defend Equestria from Megatron and Chrysalis' dire plans... The artwork is generally one of the most important aspects of a graphic novel, and the artwork in this series is generally good. It strikes a nice balance between the hard-edged mechanical nature of the Transformers and the stylized cartooniness of the Ponies, and is colorful without being garish or eye-searing. Some of the characters look a little wonky from time to time, but it happens rarely enough that I can overlook it. The comic isn't so much an overarching story as it is a series of vignettes, each showcasing a particular pony befriending a particular Transformer -- Rarity and Arcee, Rainbow Dash and Windblade, Spike and Grimlock, Fluttershy and Soundwave (!), etc. Somehow, though, this works much better than trying to weave an epic and complicated story would have, and allows for a lot of humor and character interaction. There are a few weird spots (well, weirder than would be normal for a MLP/TF crossover), and personally I found Pinkie Pie's vignette to be the weakest story of the bunch, but all in all it worked nicely. I think the timing was particularly good for this crossover to happen. My Little Pony has managed to break out of its stigma of being nothing more than a "cute show for little girls" thanks to Friendship Is Magic, and Transformers has finally reached a point where it can be silly and fun instead of deadly-serious all the time, largely thanks to the MTMTE series. Also helping this crossover work out well is the fact that it doesn't take itself seriously. Heck, the very first page features a pony complaining that "these crossover specials make no sense!" while another pony tells him "I think it's just supposed to be fun." In other words, "yes, we know this comic is silly, just sit back and enjoy it." And if you can just sit back and accept this as a non-canon, goofy, and enjoyable entry in the worlds of both franchises, you'll probably be left with a huge smile on your face in the end.

Ok, I hate to admit this but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I came across it at our library and It looked so ridiculous I just had to see how bad it was. I know I might get some flak for saying this but I honestly don't care for the new My Little Pony stuff at all, but I love Transformers and in seeing this I just had to see how on earth this kind of story would be pulled off. So needless to say I was a bit pleasantly surprised and found it all to be entertaining enough for the short time it took to read.

This was SO MUCH FUN!!!!!😁😆😅🤣 The concept being so ludicrous that I just had to have it! The creative team somehow managed to make to all fit and flow together. A truly 'comic' book with an underlying moral of friendship and courage conquering evil. Hasn't that always been the theme of such comic books? Who knew? I guffawed many times. I was dubious, but this was such a delight! Spike and Grimlock. Soundwave and Co. versus Fluttershy. Arcee and Rarity. ARCEE AND RARITY. Can I ship it? I ship it. Anyway, SO FUN!

This is a children's-otiemted book with a few easter eggs for Transformers super-fans. Each story takes place in a bottle, with little to no continuity from one story to the next, except for the first and last issues. Very short.
