"I'm not good at this, Jack," she said softly. "I cant bring myself to belong to anybody." "Sweetheart it's too late," Jack said with a trace of bitterness. He did not like feeling this way, that another person had this much power over him, but he was tired of fighting it. It was only fair that she share this unsettling feeling with him. "You're mine. And I take care of what's mine." Fire and Ice is the first book in the Guardian's series by Victoria Paige. This is the second book I've read b "I'm not good at this, Jack," she said softly. He did not like feeling this way, that another person had this much power over him, but he was tired of fighting it. It was only fair that she share this unsettling feeling with him. "You're mine. And I take care of what's mine." Fire and Ice is the first book in the Guardian's series by Victoria Paige. This is the second book I've read by this author, and it's becoming quite apparent that I'm going to stick with this author. She writes about strong alpha males, who fall in love with equally strong heroines. I've come to realise that the story is way more enjoyable when the heroine stands up to the hero and fights to get her own way. It makes reading about the frustration of the hero that much more enjoyable, don't get me wrong Jack is confident, arrogant, controlling and possessive, just the way I like them. But Maia makes him work for it and she's not about to give up her job just because he says so. "Look you're not the boss of me. If I want to leave, I will. You get me? Maia retorted forcefully. Derek really didn't want to be around for this conversation. Irresistible force meet immovable object. "You can try to leave." Jack's voice was dangerously soft. "You think you can restrain me? Tranq me again? "If I have to." Maia Pierce, is a guardian, she's tough as nails will go the extra mile to get a mission completed successfully. She takes dangerous chances, almost as if she doesn't care whether she lives or dies. She's trained in hand to hand combat, she's an excellent shot. She's basically a kickass heroine! Jack McCord, is the successful owner of a defense company, he's an ex-Navy SEAL, he's playboy, he doesn't do relationships just arrangements with woman who understand his demands. When they start getting too clingy, he gets rid of them and moves on to the next one. Until he meets Maia, from the moment he sees her he knows he has to have her. He just needs to get her out of his system and then he'll move on, but it becomes quite obvious that a few nights with her aren't going to cut it. Jack doesn't like this feeling but he dislikes being without her even more. "What I'm feeling right now,'love' is too tame a word. It's almost an obsession. I wouldn't be satisfied with anything less than outright possession. And it's unsettling." The is story is action packed, the dialogue witty the characters are intense and lovable. The sex is hot, although I will add that this story centers more around plot but I loved that part! All in all, an enjoyable read, highly recommended!

Solid 4.5 Stars What I loved the most about this story, is that I REALLY fell in love, or EXTREME like with just about every character here. With the exception of the Villains, of course. While our hero Jack & our heroine Maia will have you salivating with love, lust, passion, and heart skipping moments, I must say that I fell really hard for Jack's competition, Lee *swoons* I REALLY want one of him. So though I LOVE our hero here, and I feel he & Maia are great together,(They really burned up these pages. Individually & collectively) but I'm sorry Jack, but Lee just has me like that. I WANT LEE! Maia is just a kick a** heroine all around. I love her. Even when she was clearly being hard headed & not always making the wisest choices. You got her & her motivation. What makes her tick. Same with Jack just an awesome blend of an Alpha Male who loves hard. I loved watching his layers being peeled back as well. So many things are on point here, but if I point them out, you will have spoilers. But there was a moment/turn of events at the 91% mark, that truly ticked me off where Jack & Maia are concerned. I would have rather seen this "Fallout" go another way or come about a different way/reason. So this is why this one could not be a solid 5 stars for me. Though their ending, certainly did appease me a bit ;) But I definitely would recommend this read. It has everything you would want to see in a novel if you truly are looking to be more than enticed, but truly entertained. This will certainly be a series I will continue to follow.

This book started off strong. I loved kick-ass Maia. Yes, she was shot, it’s just a scratch. Happens everyday and twice on Tuesdays. Shrug. There was great action with a fast pace in the beginning. I started to picture her as a female Bruce Willis – Yipee Ky A…. as she maneuvered herself out of several impossible situations. The romance kind of got in the way for me….I can’t believe I just said that. It slowed the pace and pulled the focus off of the strategy to stop the bad guys. The romance kind of got in the way for me….I can’t believe I just said that. It slowed the pace and pulled the focus off of the strategy to stop the bad guys. I started to get frustrated that for such smart characters with their military operation backgrounds Maia and Jack weren’t smart or strategic. (view spoiler)[If the bad guys attack the front of the house, is it really your strategy to send everyone out the back door, where the rest of the bad guys are waiting? It was like herding cattle. The good guys beat the bad guys and then Jack and Maia return to the same house. Um the bad guys know you are there. So a bad guy cuts the power and Jack leaves an injured drugged and sleeping Maia to check the circuit breakers – he was a SEAL, did he never run an operation with a distraction? Has he never seen a movie? The good guys beat the bad guys again. Then Jack and Maia are like, well it’s been a long day, lets go upstairs to bed. In the same house where you have been attacked twice? Are you going to beef up security? Bring in some more back up? Are you going to set up a watch/sleep rotation? No we are going to go have sex. (hide spoiler)] I had to remind myself that I wasn’t reading a military suspense thriller, I was reading a romance novel. However, I was a little frustrated by the romance too. I wanted Jack to admire and respect Maia’s abilities and courage. I wanted him to enjoy working with her and think that she is the best person in the world to have his back. Instead he just wanted to protect her and stop her from doing her job and risking her life. I wanted him to get in a tight spot and have her to channel Bruce Willis again and Yippee Ky A his butt to safety but he rescues her instead. *sigh* I finished the book disappointed and thinking that there were two other characters in the book that would have suited her better. Maybe there will be a sequel where she tosses Jack out and heads to Russia to hook up with Erik.

4.5-5 stars This was a great story! I loved Maia and Jack was great. This is the first story I've read by this author and based on this I'll definitely be reading more of her work. Maia is a special agent and is a very strong woman (both physically and mentally). This is the first story I've read by this author and based on this I'll definitely be reading more of her work. Maia is a special agent and is a very strong woman (both physically and mentally). She's in a dangerous line of work and has had past tragedies so she doesn't allow herself to get involved in relationships. She lives for her job but isn't afraid to bend some rules to do what needs done. When she works a job protecting a witness before a trial, she meets Jack for the first time. Jack is an ex-Navy SEAL and currently has a very successful defense company that develops weapons for the DoD. He lost a fiance years before and since then he hasn't been able to fall in love. Now he just dates women for a few months each before moving on. He's a good guy though and treats his women well, making his limitations in the relationships clear from the start. When he meets Maia for the first time, the attraction is so strong he knows he has to get her in to his bed. He doesn't realize that a brief affair with Maia might not be enough. Maia and Jack both feel an intense attraction to each other. Jack ends up getting time with Maia when her cover is blown, she needs someplace safe for a few weeks and ends up at his beach house. She agrees to indulge in a brief affair with him for the few weeks she's there. While Jack and Maia get closer, danger still lurks and Jack is confronted a few times with the dangers on Maia's job. Jack discovers that he doesn't want to let Maia go at the end of the few weeks and convinces Maia he'll deal with her job and the danger involved if she'll give them a chance. During their time together, Maia has fallen for Jack regardless of her attempts to guard her heart. She agrees to try a relationship with Jack and is very worried that this is a recipe for disaster. Things don't go easy for them and I felt bad for Jack at times. He's a total Alpha male and wants to protect his woman but that's the thing most likely to drive her away so he tries desperately to temper his instincts. He tends to get a little overly upset when she gets in risky situations but he has her back multiple times as things progress. Unfortunately when she has make an abrupt departure for an extended mission that's very important, Jack gets freaked by the danger and doesn't react well when he sees her next. In a serious bout of relationship dumbassedness, Jack lets his fears and anger loose and hurts Maia. He realizes his mistake and is desperate to talk to Maia and work things out. Unfortunately, by that time there are additional issues that must be overcome and Jack has to go save her. I really loved how things worked out and was quite happy with the ending and their HEA. This was a great book. Maia and Jack are perfect for each other and it was fun seeing them work things out and realize it for themselves. The action plot was interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to the next story in the series. I'd recommend this book. Thumbs up! :D

I enjoyed Fire and Ice. It's an action romance, with a VERY strong h. The h is a female style James Bond - except that she works for a private contractor in the U.S. But she definitely has a license to kill (so, warning, the heroine/book is kind of cavalier towards violence and killing). She's also gorgeous and amazing at getting herself out of difficult situations against huge odds. To a James Bond-like unbelievable extent. And, like James Bond, she uses her sexuality in furtherance of her job. I enjoyed Fire and Ice. It's an action romance, with a VERY strong h. And, like James Bond, she uses her sexuality in furtherance of her job. In fact, the h is so kic-a$.$. and in control of her emotions that some people may find the book to be too lop-sided; although the H originally thinks that he only wants to hook up, he is clearly way more invested in their relationship for most of the book. In contrast, she treats him like a three-week stand for most of the book. I don't mind this kind of lop-sidedness, especially because most books have the opposite type of lop-sidedness. In fact, I enjoy this type of reverse sexism. ;-) But I think some people won't like her "male-like attitude." The H is possessive and protective and alpha, despite the unequal relationship. I will read this author's next book, if there is one. I hope there will be! Edited: Upon rereading this book before reading others by this author, I have to downgrade the book from 4 to 3 stars. The writing style is somewhat clunky. There's a lot of tell, not show, going on, and the dialogue and developments are stilted. I think this is endemic with authors' first books and will likely improve over time. Edited again: upgrading to 3.5 stars after rereading again.

I read on just because I could not believe how awful the book was it was like one of those ghastly third rate 80’s police dramas. Except that those were actually more fun to watch. So my question is how is it even remotely possible for this book to have so many high ratings? Is it me or is it the book?!?!

It very difficult for me to rate this book… I liked the story and I liked the characters, but the writing style was bad… Much was told and not shown. It was written in a kind of mechanical way. Passages that should have moved me in some way, just left me feeling like I was reading a cake recipe. Even the sex scenes, that were very frequent by the way, were written in this way: rub point A until lubricated, suck point B, put tab A into slot B… Boring… And this was not only during sex scenes, but everywhere: action scenes, discussions, relationship… Another complaint I have is the pacing: too fast. It also didn’t flow smoothly, but change direction often and abruptly. If you can get up to this writing style the story is very interesting. A young, incredibly beautiful red-hair woman, super agent for a very important non government agency, meets a gorgeous rich ex-SEAL self-made business man whose brother need a bodyguard. And she’s perfect for that! But Maia is incredible: she knows how to fight, she’s strong willed, she’s sexy, she’s mouthy, she’s sassy, she’s extremely independent. She doesn’t do relationships. She lives for her work and she’s very, very good at it. Jack is an ex-SEAL who, when he quit the SEALs, make a name for himself into a business of supplying the government with innovative weapons and other items. He doesn’t do relationships too, because he lost his fiancée due to his SEAL past and doesn’t want to involve his heart again. The perfect pair! So they start their affair, but both start falling in love. Besides their love story, the Russian Mob war is on for the distribution and production of a powerful new drug. Maia is obviously involved and Jack’s brother too and therefore Jack. Maia gets into difficult situations where she risks her life and Jack protective side goes into over-drive. He doesn’t want Maia to get into danger, but she loves her job and danger is her thing! So they clash continuously… and also continuously they have make-up sex. Both are strong characters and the choices they made are logical and easily understandable. As I said, the book had much potential, but the writing style was a BIG issue for me, thus the only 3 stars rating… Sooo sorry… :(

Yeah, me too. I LOVE IT when it's the H that makes me cry harder than the h ever could. LOVE. IT. "Be prepared to grovel, my friend." Raindrops on roses, and whiskers on kittens...and GROVELING. I love groveling in romance novels. It's one of my favorite things. It's a really good man that's willing to not only admit he's wrong, but to do it repeatedly until she hears him, and takes BIG actions to get her back. Jack is a brilliant groveler. This book isn't just a romance novel. VP's Romantic Suspense novels usually have a military bent, and Fire and Ice is no exception. You see, Victoria Paige writes smut for smart girls, and it IS smart. As I was reading aloud to my also-smart hubby, he understood every single technical and military term that was used. I remember looking up most of them, and having to Google for additional information. Who knew you could learn so much from reading yummy smut books? A long, long time ago, I think I got this book for free when it was on sale at Amazon. Then a few months later, I met a Victoria on Goodreads, and a few months after that, I learned that she was Victoria PAIGE and that I already had a couple of her books on my Kindle that I hadn't read yet. Well, that led me through her entire library, which I'm pretty sure I sucked up inside of a week (I read fast and I read a LOT). It was so nice to take the time to read this one out loud. Not only do you catch more things the second time through a book, but the slowing down magnifies that ability. Try reading aloud to your man! You'd be surprised what he might like to hear coming out of your mouth. ;) P.S. Oh. My GOD! I forgot to say...my favorite Victoria Paige character of all time was introduced in this book! Viktor Baran!

Fire and Ice had a strong start but kind of fizzled out in the end for me. Oddly enough, the romance got in the way of catching the bad guys (Yes, I know it’s a romantic suspense novel). Also, there were a lot of characters being introduced that where irrelevant and there seemed to be a lot going on in that didn’t add to the main story line. What disappointed me was, Jack never saw her as some one who he both admired and wanted to work with as an equal. To me he never really acknowledged how truly badass she was, that she never needed his protection but wanted it because she wanted him (if that makes sense). He continually saw her as some who need his protection. I would recommend this book and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Jack is former Navy SEAL who's company is one of the DoDs top small weapons supplier/innovators. He is a strong Alpha type guy and he falls really hard for Maia and he has a hard time dealing with the risk taking that she does for her job. Saying all that the only thing I didn't really care for is that the arguments and disagreements that Jack and Maia have he try's to win with sex that was a little on the side of violent. Don't get me wrong there was plenty of sweet loving but it would of been nice to have less sex with their arguing because to me that doesn't solve the problem or change anything, it just postpone it. Overall, This story was easy to get yourself immersed into and you get drawn in from page one. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a strong protagonist and some heart-pumping action. And Viktor Baran, I hope the author writes a book about him.

Talk about Alpha Male Hotness! I read the synopsis on this book and I wanted to see if the strong independent woman Maia could fall for an Alpha Male like Jack. Jack and Maia meet and sparks fly but Ms Paige writes this book full of adventure and you don't know from one minute to the next if they are on fire or ice. The characters in this book are so well written I even liked the secondary characters. WOW was this book Hot! The action never stops I kept looking at the progress of the book to see of this was it for these two. Poor Maia is such a magnet for trouble and Jack would like to chain her to his bed to keep her safe but can't. I laughed a little and I was on the edge of seat through most of the book. Very well written. This is not my usual kind of book and I can not explain how happy I am that Ms Paige gave me this book to read and this is my honest review. I can not wait to start book 2 in this series!

This is a difficult review to give. I liked the writing, and I adored Maia, she is a fascinating, amazing h, one of the best I have read in a long time. The truth is this book would have been a full star rating for me but for one thing. Double standards. I'm not a die hard feminist, I don't believe men and woman are the same, but I do believe they are equal, and while I love a hot Alpha-take-charge-throw-her-over-his-shoulder H, there has to be respect despite the chest beating. I agree with the reviewers that were disappointed that Jack never acknowledged or even noticed just how good at her job she was. And sadly if she had been a man then instead of being reckless and self destructive, she would have been brave and heroic, and there would never have even been even a thought of her giving up her missions and becoming a teacher. But there was, there is and in the end I was saddened and disappointed. Jack went through a moment of change, a moment where I thought.... YES!!! he's getting it, but somehow it all backslid and he became even more of a moron than before. So three stars it is, for an amazing female hero that deserved better. Perhaps Ms Paige will write another book about Maia where she finally dumps Jack and hooks up with a man who can love her just as she is.

I received this book for an honest review. This book was truly a good fast read! The characters were both alpha male and an alpha female. The author did an amazing job of explaining these characters! Jack is your typical billionaire man, and always gets what he wants. He owns a successful business dealing in defense. Maia is one bad a$$ chick! Her job is risky, and every mans nightmare of a job for a woman! Maia makes her job look like child's play though! It has action, it has love, and it has drama...all in one!

I had the pleasure of pre-reading this for the author. It grabbed my attention from the beginning and had a great pace. I read it over two (2) days. It's a suspense novel featuring our hero, Maia, an agent who is taking on the Russian Mob and a natural risk-taker (won't tell you more.....could be spoiler). Always independent, she falls for Jack an ex Navy SEAL. Jack generally doesn't date a girl for more than 3 months at a time. Jacks falls faster and harder than Maia. I really loved this book. I like Victoria Page's style of writing suspense romance. This is my 2nd book. The story is well balanced and has all the right ingredients. I loved Jack, being hot & alpha and all, although in the end this nearly destroyed his relationship with Maia, who was a wee bit too "bad*ss" & wild in my opinion. Some light exaggeration in her attack & defense skills. But that made the book so interesting. Five stars. I really loved this book. I like Victoria Page's style of writing suspense romance. I liked this story quite a bit. Maia is a feisty take no prisoners female. Jack is all alpha male. It was fun to watch them team up and the sparks definitely flew!

The first few pages were good for a laugh, but I don't think my sense of humour is elastic enough to stretch beyond page 20. It's really a very badly written book. Good suspense novel I liked the action, the Russiam mob elements, secret agents and all the suspense of the story. I didn't care for the romantic elements. The relationship between Jack and Maia is very volatile and I was not comfortable with Maia's constant disregard for her own life and her refusal to understand why Jack had a problem with that. They came to an understanding in the end and I did finish the book but it's not one of my favorites. Danger blows Maia's door off the hinges and undaunted, Jack is ready, willing and able to give whatever Maia will accept from him as he tries to convince her they belong together. What an appropriately named dynamic read! Minor glitches didn't detract from balanced, accessible and exciting characters, palpable danger, exciting action, good sexy times and a strong story. Unfortunately, this gem sat in my TBR pile much too long but it was definitely worth the wait! My only regret about reading it is I'll never discover this story for the first time again! Hot, daring suspense Lethal female agent crosses path with player, ex-seal/CEO mix in the Russian mob, giving us a volatile, passionate adventure. It's refreshing to see strong woman character & for the male counter part need to adjust his perspective. Look forward to more of this series.
