    This is a wonderfully thrilling middle-grade adventure with a spiritual dimension and a conservation message. Set in Alaska, it is partly told from the point of view of the mother polar bear, who represents the spirit of the land. She is the opposite of the excitable, very modern Lottie, and yet they form a strong bond. Through the magic of an old camera and the help of dog sledders a disaster is averted.
