2.5 stars this is “Regretting You” but without the mother-daughter drama because the focus is on the adults. Eason-Bree (MCs of this book) are basically Jonah-Morgan (from “Regretting You”), only their story is inifitely more twisty, tragic, and dramatic at the hands of author AM, which i wouldnt have thought possible because those three adjectives were how i’d associate CoHo with too. just to be clear, i didnt give it a low rating because of the comparison or similarity but because i didnt like h 2.5 stars this is “Regretting You” but without the mother-daughter drama because the focus is on the adults. Our two survivors, Jessica and Eason are left floundering in their wake of devastation and heartbreak, desolate, and inconsolable as they deal with the aftermath of saying goodbye to their significant other. This book packs a hard punch from the emotional journey these two go on to the jaw dropping twists this author spins, twists you never see coming.. Since it was Eason's house which burned to the ground Jessica offers up her pool house knowing that her deceased husband would approve. Through the ups and downs of co parenting and running a business and a household all those butterfly feels came out to play as Eason stole the show. Being in such close quarters these two do grow close as they lean on each other, as they develop more than friendship for the other. It wasn't insta, but they instantly stole my heart. This was so beautifully written, from the very first chapter I was hooked, the very last page I had tears in my eyes and a heart full to bursting. This author excels when it comes to the angsty, emotional, heart gripping stories and this one is no different.

However, I was very curious of how the author would bring the heroine around and redeem her before my eyes! (note: until the end of the story I couldn’t be warmed to her, regardless of how nice she turned out to be...😔) Also, as much as the author tried, I couldn’t find Eason and Bree compatible. Eason was a fantastic figure, wonderful, goodhearted and so devoted!! I was thrilled his dreams came true and succeeded in the music industry! The story had two huge twists. (no spoilers 😉) I didn’t see the first coming and I was really shocked!!! I never expected it!!! Brilliant!!! After a lot of chapters, the second twist happened. And brilliant was no more!!! I just couldn’t believe what I was reading!!! Apart from extremely predictable, I found it also shallow and so stereotypical! If I hadn’t read previous books by this author, I would have thought From the Embers was her debut novel and might have excused this twist! This was undoubtedly Writing Angsty Twists 101!!!! There was nothing to be impressed with! If this was something to come across or create great angst, it was poorly delivered. I am sorry to say that I expected more... 😔😔😔

When I think I have it figured out, she throws me for a loop, and she does it so seamlessly, I just never see it coming! Bree and Eason (not Easton, lol) are both pretty incredible. I loved them from the get go. They’re married to each other’s best friends, although their relationship was never the best. When tragedy strikes and they loose their spouses, they only have each other to go on and so they form a united front for the kids even though they’re totally devastated and grieving. They form the best of friendships and that eventually turns into love. However, since this is an Aly Martinez book, nothing is really what it seems and there are secrets that are uncovered and twists and turns I didn’t see coming, even though I always like to think I have all figured out. I loved everything and totally grieved with both Eason and Bree, for their loss and the devastating truths that were uncovered. I also loved that their love developed over time and that they didn’t just jumped each other the first chance they got. I loved Eason so much, that man was just all sorts of special. And Bree, she was amazing. Such great characters and character development. And the kids! They were precious! Overall, this book is Aly Martinez’ signature brand of awesome and I loved every second of it. Definitely my favorite book of 2021 by far! Very few authors get to me like she does, and I just can’t wait to read what she’ll come up with next! Was it too soon? By most people’s standards, probably. But not for me. I’d found her. The one. There were no nerves or fears. No second-guessing or cold feet. I knew down to the marrow of my bones that Bree had been born to be mine. Our bond might have been forged through tragedy, but our love flourished through patience, genuine respect, and understanding.

It's funny because I literally just read Reclaim and freaking loved it. Seriously, that book dead-ass caused me create a shrine to all men named Cam. this be me anytime i even think about Cam&Cam Long story short, I went into From the Embers with sky-high expectations. Not only was the cover gorgeous, seriously look at that cover, but the tropes at play sounded *chef's kiss* amazing. I am such a sucker for grieving angsty widows finding love with each other. I was really in the mood for that you know? Unfortunately, the signature ALY MARTINEZ twist happened and. . . yeah, i wasn't a fan. IMO, the twist really took the wind out of FROM THE EMBERS sails, and it essentially sapped away any of the tension//angst that was at play. *sighs* ミ✘ ᴛʜᴇ ɢᴏᴏᴅ + ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴀᴅ ✔彡 -ˏˋ ✔ [𝓵𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓭 ⋆ 𝓽𝓱𝓪𝓽 ⋆ 𝓪𝓷𝓰𝓼𝓽] ✔ ˊˎ- not gonna lie, the main reason i picked up FROM THE EMBERS was because of that angsty as hell synopsis. i mean COME ON how great does this sound - In the aftermath of tragedy, it’s strange the things you remember. The deafening boom as the house exploded. The paralyzing fear as I searched for my wife. The blinding smoke burning my eyes as I carried her out. But carved into my soul for the rest of my days would be the earth-shattering realization that the woman in my arms wasn’t my wife. hint, it sounds FUCKING AMAZING. the angst people, all the angst. and honestly that scene was heart wrenching. not only was the mini-twist really well done, but the whole "dress thing" really put a whole new meaning on BFFs swapping clothes. there was high potential for drama, angst, grief, and self-loathing. see, not only did Eason save Bree instead of his wife, but Jennifer (or Jessica???) was Bree's best friend. likewise, Robert was Eason's childhood best friend. can't you guys just smell the heartbreak from here?? i loved the set-up of having Eason and Bree basically become a pseudo couple and deciding to raise their kids together. watching Eason and Bree prop each other up during their grief was one of the best aspects of the book. i just wish it had stayed that way. . . -ˏˋ ✔ [𝓯𝓪𝓶𝓲𝓵𝔂 ⋆ 𝓼𝓱𝓮𝓷𝓪𝓷𝓲𝓰𝓪𝓷𝓼] ✔ ˊˎ- hands down the best part of FROM THE EMBERS was all the family stuff happening. now as a reader my opinions on family shenanigans has greatly ebbed and flowed. when i first started reading romance i was what. . . oh dear lord - 10?!?! yeah, so, i was pretty young, thus, i had no real interest in reading about adults taking care of kids. as i've gotten older that sentiment has remained somewhat consistent. honestly, it really depends on the kid(s). i cannot stand when authors write these "wise-beyond-their-years-30something-year-old-5-year olds." i just can't. however, when it hits just right the family stuff will stab me right in the feels. here, . . . yeah, i got a bit choked up and "awwwhhhhed" a bunch. i mean this whole scene - ❝Uncle Eason wears crop tops when he misses Aunt Jessica.❞ Her eyebrows shot up her forehead as she turned a suspicious gaze on me. I quickly waved him off. ❝No. We were kidding. It was a whole story. You had to be there.❞ was both hilarious and tear jerking. ALY MARTINEZ has been consistently great at writing kids into her stories. so, 10/10 for the kids + family stuff. -ˏˋ ✘ [𝓫𝓻𝓮𝓮 & 𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓸𝓷] ✘ ˊˎ- hmmmmm. . . sooo. . . i've gotta ask - can you really love a romance when you dislike // are meh about the main characters? i mean, you can, but for the sake of your mental health you shouldn't. personally, i started out kinda liking Bree & Eason. they seemed like intriguing characters, their personal history was interesting, and they seemed to have a real opposites attack (lol i meant attract) vibe going on. we have Bree - the super organized well-put together lady boss ✨ which. . . i mean, sure. and Eason - the "slacker" musician who wants nothing more than to share his music with the world. ✨ that's pure sexy right there on paper that sounds like an interesting combination! in practice. . . meh. idk, if it's me or what, but dear lord i STRUGGLED to feel the chemistry between Eason and Bree. S-T-R-U-G-G-L-E-D. this is probably one of the few times where i thought the MCs should've stayed friends. simply put, i liked their dynamic wayyyy better as friends - ❝I’m sorry,❞ I whispered. ❝I shouldn’t have called you today, and then—❞ He tilted his head my way, his warm, brown eyes snapping to mine. ❝Yes, you should have. I’m exactly who you should have called, and I’m glad you did.❞ so when Bree started having sex dreams about Eason i was out here like - i couldn't help but ask, since when! and also, W H Y? basically both characters were boring as individuals and they were even more boring together. -ˏˋ ✘ [𝓽𝓱𝓮 ⋆ 𝓽𝔀𝓲𝓼𝓽] ✘ ˊˎ- now if you guys have never read an ALY MARTINEZ romance before well, first, wth are you doing with your life, but also, you need to know that they ALWAYS have a big "plot twist." always. sometimes they work. see RECLAIM. sometimes they don't. this book is the latter. ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ LOOK AWAY, SPOILERS, HIDE YOUR INNOCENT EYES! ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ ✦ sᴘᴏɪʟᴇʀ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ✦ okay so, the big plot twist here is this, Jessica (or is it Jennifer) Eason's dead wife, and Robert, Bree's dead husband, were doing the nasty on the sly for YEARS. i'm talking y-e-a-r-s. they were having sex so long that Luna - Eason's daughter - might not even be his. first off, OUCH, and second, are you fucking kidding me. here was my visceral reaction when the twist was revealed, truly, this was my face - to say i was #NotImpressed is a GD understatement. basically, what this plot did was shit all over any angst, grief, or drama that had been taking place. to me it seemed like ALY MARTINEZ just didn't want to go there. she didn't want to add the angst of having two people fall in love with each other with such interconnected pasts. and honestly, it was a huge miss. because seriously, not even five pages later, Eason's thinking shit like this - But at the end of the day, I’d never allowed myself to go there with Bree because she hadn’t belonged to me. She’d been Rob’s, and him being gone hadn’t changed that. But you know what did change it? Rob’s being a piece-of-shit bastard who’d crossed every line that had ever been drawn in the sand. All bets were off. Guy code or whatever the fuck you wanted to call it. It was done now. like, ugggghhh, great, now the angst is gone! she should've just made everyone get a divorce or something. that would've been juicier. so, yeah, the twist just didn't work for me. i tried for a couple of more pages but my heart wasn't in it. ミ✘ ɪɴ ᴄᴏɴᴄʟᴜsɪᴏɴ ✔彡 That twist killed any enjoyment I was getting out of FROM THE EMBERS. I think it was a huge case of it's not you, it's me. I went in with a certain expectation, and then the "big reveal" just sapped all the angst//tension//interest from the story. Personally, I still recommend FROM THE EMBERS. I think if you guys are fine with the twist or just don't care, then you'll like the book. Alas, I ended up having to put this book down. Maybe I'll finish it someday. . .

What followed was the picking up of the pieces, the grief, the anger and unexpected friendship… The story, the characters, it all wrapped me up in a storm that included tears, laughter and a warmth that I could feel. What do you do when you are driven to your knees with grief? You figure out what is important and that’s exactly what the main characters did. Through challenges that felt like boulders that might smash their shaky foundation, these families were going to be rocked to their core more than once. The friction between Bree and Eason was strong until they had to put it all aside. Was it easy? No. Was it amazing? Yes. Their hearts were on full display and the honesty between them was sweet and brutal at times as grief took its toll. The kids were the pins that held it all together and their well-being was theirs… How they survived it all was a beautiful story that had me feeling their grief and their triumphs. And all the love… My heart really was pummeled along with theirs making this one of my top reads of the year. A new favourite from a fave author – I want to give it ALL the stars! ~Diane, 5++ stars ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The blurb lured me in, and my life was never the same after it. This story had my emotions Right from the beginning I could tell Eason would do anything for his family and friends but since life had thrown some bumps his way that prevented him truly giving everything, he promised Jessica his wife one thing was for sure, that he kept trying! As Easton, Jessica, Bree & Rob have a grown-up date night Eason & Jessica’s house, a night to unwind turned to a night of terror, pain, and grief. While Bree & Eason try to come to terms that their spouses are not coming back, they try to maneuver life together- helping each other. As they continue to support each other and try not to murder each other (mostly Bree 😊) I got to see what could be if they allowed themselves to love again. Now pay attention because………. now you don’t think I’ll actually tell you more of what had me holding my breath, do you. All I will say is that this book will capture your full attention and have your emotions all over the place. It will have you sniffling, laughing, crying, ahhing and at times gasping. One of my favorite reads by Aly Martinez that will stay with me for a long time and definitely a reread. Kara- 5 Stars

I worried about how the author was going to handle the stages of grief but she moved the story in a believable way that packed an emotional punch and though there is sad, there is also hope and the promise of light. No word was wasted. And can I call attention to the fact that this book is less than 300 pages and it still delivered a story that was compelling and complete in every way. Eason and Bree, including the children, are well-developed characters and the story moved at pace where the reader is eased into the idea of them as a couple. Before any romance started, they each alternated being the rock whenever the other is stricken by grief. That dynamic worked for me and showed how they put the children's well-being first. There are twist and turns and for a second I thought oh no, the author didn't go that route. It was too convenient, but I hung in there, curious to see where the author would take the plot and she did not disappoint! I loved the epilogue. It was heart-melting and the perfect ending to this emotional well-written story.

But at the heart of it are two devastated people just trying to hold onto each other for their own sanity and for the sake of their children. It is a poignant and beautiful story of hope, healing, and learning to live again after tragedy. About putting guilt, anger, and pain from the past behind in order to enjoy the present and look towards a future. These two seem like such opposites with her being more stubborn, reserved, controlling, and rigid. And him being more fun, easy-going, laid back, and artistically inclined. They had a complicated relationship in the past, but now they have to rely on each other just to survive each day and provide as much normalcy and happiness as they can for their kids. But along the way, there is a true spark of love and passion, and so many tender and heartwarming moments. There are secret and devastating truths uncovered. There are events that will shake the new foundation that they are trying to build. For every little bit of happiness they find, it seems that there is a new challenge. And some of them will test them to their limits. Sometimes life does not go as expected and the most devastating of events can eventually lead you to right where you need to be. This book was tragic, gut-wrenching, inspiring, romantic, suspenseful, swoony, and completely unputdownable. It kept me flipping pages, my heart pounding, yelling at my kindle, and thinking that this author continues to be an evil genius. There were things I never saw coming! But even with the hard and sad stuff, there is so much love, faith, and real moments in this story that it just warmed my heart. It is about survival and literally rising from the ashes. I loved this couple together. I adored the family they created. I shared every triumph they did and my heart hurt every time they went through something difficult. I enjoyed the cameos that fans of this author might recognize. This story is absolutely unique and unforgettable, and one of my top favorites of this year. WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?! I am reeling from this book. It brings ALL the emotions. I am laughing, crying, intrigued, shocked and of course hot n bothered, all from this one story. YIKES! Bree brings her own unique self to this story. Ugh the beginning of this book has me in tears. These two weren’t really friends but they were married to each other’s best friend. Yep a little complicated especially when said friends die in a house fire at a dinner party. WHAT?! Ms Martinez does what she excels at. She takes us on an emotional journey with all these revelations that will blow your mind. I guessed almost none of it. The single parent element of this book is some of the best writing I have ever experienced. I want to cry just thinking about the children in this story. I REALLY want to dissect this story and share all my feelings on EVERY part of this book. EEK. Can you say “Hauntingly Beautiful”? I want to say more but won’t cause you need to experience it for yourself (biting my tongue to stay silent). How can you not love the emotional ride?! Sooo freaking good. Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO

Aly Martinez does it again! This book invoked so many emotions in me. Page after page I found myself so invested in Eason and Bree. Bree, Eason, Rob and Jessica all had thier journeys in this one, some lasted longer than others and maybe that's for the better 😉.   The kids 👨‍👧‍👧 so cute, adorably funny.  Most important though these characters will last with me for a while, because I believed thier love.  Aly gave us incredible characters and some I have missed.  I think a re read of Levee in is order.  One thing I can always count on from Aly is she is the best at rings.  She writes the best scene involving rings.  She can always make my heart swell 💓 and my eyes tear up 😪with them dam rings 💍.  This story took me away and I desperately needed that.  So thank you Aly for entertaining me and taking me away into the world 🌎 of Bree and Eason.

Now that they have a little girl, she worries that Eason is not capable of supporting a family. He has an opportunity to sell his songs, but they are personal. They are his life story. Jessica Maxwell comes wants a better life now. She argues to convince Eason that he must compromise. He is at a crossroads; does he change directions to keep his wife happy or does he keep his eye on the ultimate prize. Rob Winters is Eason’s best friend. He is always there to restore Eason’s confidence. Coincidentally, Rob is married to Jessica’s best friend Bree. While the two couples are having an adult game night, at the Maxwell’s house there is an explosion. The Maxwell’s house goes up in flames. Eason mentally pictures where his wife is sitting, crawls to her through the smoke, and carries her out of the house. He starts to go back for Rob and Bree when there is a second explosion. Eason looks down and realizes he did not grab Jessica; he saved Bree by mistake. How did this happen? How can he live with himself? From the Embers is an emotional story of two people struggling to put their lives back together after a tragedy. Poor Eason lost everything, literally. Not only did he lose his wife, but he also lost all the memories of their time together. Fortunately, he has his daughter, Luna. She gives him the strength to get up in the morning. Bree is in a similar situation. Her children get her out of bed every day. Now these two, not so friendly people, need to be there for each other. From the first page, I am immediately caught up with the struggles of the characters before and after the fire. There are teary moments, smiles, joy, personal successes, a few twists, and a big “I didn’t see that coming” moment. What I love most about this author’s writing style Is the way she brings the characters to life. You experience the emotions, good and bad, that the characters experience. Aly Martinez did a superb job showing the pain of loss, the slow journey of recovery, and finally moving on in a new direction. If you are like me when you reach the final page, this story will linger with you. I love the hero in this story. Eason stole my breath. His pain and guilt are tangible emotions that carry through from the book to my heart. The journey from start to finish is incredible. Eason and Bree go from putting up with each other though anger, learning who they are, to supportive, then friendship. Bree doesn’t start out as a favorite, but she grows on me as the story is revealed. Love the children! Often, they steal the show. Luna, Madison, and Asher are so cute with their hijinks and the way they support each other, and their parents. Asher and Eason are a hoot. Their lighthearted antics, soften the worry and despair of Eason and Bree. I highly recommend From the Embers. In Aly Martinez style, you will experience the story while reading it. She is so good at making all the emotions bubble up in me. What a read!

liked this a lot more than i though i would, the plot looks like a ID case but i enjoyed it. Heroine husband faked It better so we can assume the same wasnt happening at her house and she was fine with her husband even though has been some time for them too but for different reasons, like their kids demanding attention. The hero was pretty awesome and the heroine is pretty great too. A strong woman who is a great mother and can be a badass ceo too. He is also an amazing dad. Their spouses were disgusting pieces of shit, but her ex husband was an better actor, they had an good marriage (he was cheating but he faked it well) while the hero was struggling and divorce was almost being discussed, they were no longer having sex and he was sleeping on the couch. Their spouses were awful, they fucked at the heroine bed and sometimes when the hero was at the next room. Heroine had two kids and the hero had one. 5 years old and a baby while he also had a baby a few months younger. No sex with their spouses on page, nothing happened after the book started with them. The book started one day and the same night the fire happened. I really like the heroine's older son, i laughed so much whenever he asked something. I loved the hero bond with him. The book would probably be a five star ir the heroine also adopt the hero daughtef at the end and If there were the typical scene with the kids calling them mommy and daddy. I also wanted a little more bonding between the hero and heroine's younger baby. A few cute scenes showing them together without the rest of the kids would have been awesome. I liked It a lot and i didnt feel they were second bests and the author was pretty fair during the explosion showing his guilt because he saved the heroine not his wife and the heroine anger because he survived and her husband was dead. There was no bullshit Double standarts showing an miserable heroine with an abused husband and an happy hero. He was unhappy but trying to be the best father and husband and she was pretty happy even though their spouses were awful people, until they died there were no clues about their sordid shit. We can say he was the unhappy one.

I've loved Aly's writing for a long time now - her characters so layered and intriguing, her storylines so compelling; but I think From the Embers is even more memorable, even better than all her past excellent works. It's got twists and secrets and revelations and all kinds of things beneath the surface of what seemed at first glance to be just a shared tragedy. The characters here are just so, I don't know, I felt their pain viscerally. I felt their love. I felt everything they felt for each other. I felt their tentative feelings morph from simply friends and fellow survivors to a lot, so much, more; and it was glorious reading as Bree, Eason and their amazing children bore their tragedy and found a family with each other. However ugly it might have been at times, there was beauty to be found when looking back at all the pain and heartache and devastation, knowing we’d come out the other end better off and more in love than I had ever known possible." 4 friends and one tragic night that would change their lives forever. Eason and Bree's journey was heartwrenching and unimaginable yet full of hope. Life as they knew it was completely obliterated. They were left utterly devasted, grieving and floundering. Searching for a way to move on and just survive. Having no one else, but each other, their once shaky relationship begins to morph into a beautiful friendship and support system. Along with their young children they become a make shift family. Through many spine tingling twists and turns, which there are many that I did not see coming, Eason and Bree's bond solidified further and their relationship continued to grew. The intimacy and love between these two took my breath away. Through despair, heartache, respect and honesty their incomparable love was born. Their journey was a tantalizing slow burn and perfecly paced. I loved Bree. I found her to be genuine, sincere and strong... But Eason Maxwell (along with the children) stole the show for me. He gave me butterflies and had me swooning like a school girl. I fell head over heels for this man!! "He was still attentive and kind. Thoughtful and selfless. The world’s sexiest goofball. And I was his. What more could I ask for?" Prepare yourself for this highly emotional, mind blowing read! Get the tissues ready, but rest assure it will be worth!

Even though they aren't the bestest of friends, they find comfort and support in each other. Eason has been trying to break into the music industry for years but hasn't had his big break yet, and Bree who owns a company (but became a stay at home mom when she had kids) decides to get back to work as CEO. They find a great balance between work and taking care of the kids together, and I absolutely loved how great things went. There were some ups and downs but at the end of the day they did the best they could. The children were so cute and I loved Eason's relationship with all three of them. Bree and Eason are the opposite: Bree is stubborn and reserved, and Eason is fun, lighthearted, and laid-back. But they balance each other out and work perfectly together. The romance was a bit of a slow-burn but it was perfect in my opinion. It would've felt rushed if these two came together sooner. The chemistry was amazing and I loved the intimacy. This is the kind of story I love from Aly Martinez. She is one of the best when it comes to emotional romances, and I enjoyed From the Embers immensely. I already look forward to her next book.

I never expected this heartbreaking tragedy to completely consume me like it did. This story is about so much loss that it could destroy even the strongest person. But for Bree Winters and Eason Maxwell, a devastating fire not only stole their life but reforged it in to a new reality. Eason is a wonderful guy, almost a saint at times, especially with the crazy twists and turns in his life. Really, there is so much to love about Eason! He's a dedicated dad and a caring uncle with a completely selfless soul all wrapped up in a hunky talented musician. Even someone rigid and judgemental (hint, Bree, hint) can see all of Eason's awesomeness. I really didn't like Bree at first. As I mentioned previously, her personality can be a little overwhelming. But tragedy has broken Bree's cynical, toughened shell. Her budding friendship with Eason showed a softer, caring side I didn't think existed (for Eason anyway) and soon I couldn't help but care about and root for her. Filled with heartbreak, plenty of tears, tons of surprises, and so much healing, this story was definitely worth the read. 4.5 stars

From the Embers by Aly Martinez is easily a top 2021 read for me. I'm always a sucker for a single parent story, and this one was even better because it is a double single parent story. She knows how to wring out every drop of emotion you can muster throughout the course of her books. Frankly put, you're going to be put through the proverbial ringer. But all the emotion is so worth it in the end. From the Embers is a beautiful tale of loss, and the love that blooms from loss.

I think this is my least favorite of Aly Martinez's book. First of all, this book was pretty predictable. Then there's the bigger problem...you blinked and missed where the two main characters fell in love. There was no chemistry or deep down feelings that were uncovered. The two of there were just a really hard sell for me. This book just felt really rushed in general. I think this is my least favorite of Aly Martinez's book. From the Embers is Aly Martinez at her best. Exceptional, out of this world writing. All-consuming and deeply emotional storytelling. This book is EVERYTHING. It is everything and then some. If I could scream that at you right now, I would. But I will not do that. Too much. This book is hands down one of my favorites by this author and one of my top reads of the year. It is also one of the most emotionally gripping books I have read in quite some time. This book broke me. It killed me and all of my feels and emotions at times. It murdered and tore at my heart. It physically and emotionally hurt me more times than you can shake a stick at. There were moments within this book that simultaneously shattered me, took my breath away, and had my eyes tearing up again and again. At one point when reading From the Embers, I stopped reading, took a breath, and made myself an alcoholic drink because I was so consumed in the feels with Eason and Bree. That is how much I felt every morsel of this book. That is how much I lived the events and unforgettable moments of this book. That is how much I breathed every second of this story. And you know what?! I effing loved every second of it. You see I am an emotional masochist. I love it when a book makes me feel everything. I love it when characters allow me to peel back their layers, look at their flaws, understand their personalities and dynamics and complications, all while letting me feel everything with them along the way. I love it when a book hurts my heart. I love it when characters make me cry. I love it when the events of a story hurt my heart and envelope me within their feels in the deepest and realest of ways. It is what I live for as a reader. It is what I LOVE. It is what I honestly treasure. Aly Martinez is my dealer of choice when it comes to romance novels that make you feel everything, and From the Embers was no different. In fact, it was more. So much glorious more. This book explores what happens when the unimaginable occurs. It follows the all-consuming and deeply emotional love story of Bree and Eason. These are two people who are friends, but not really friends. They're kind of at odds with one another, but a life-changing and eviscerating event changes everything for them. A house fire kills their spouses, and in the moment when Eason thought he was saving his own wife, he realized he was saving Bree. Now the two of them have to pick up the pieces. They have to put themselves back together again after heartbreak, after devastation, after the death of their people. From the Embers Is their story of how they go from being at odds, to being some version of friends with one another, to being so much more. Along the way is a deeply gripping and emotionally breathtaking story that will own you from start to finish. And just like any Aly Martinez novel, there are plenty of twists and turns through every page that will have you wondering what the hell that next moment will bring them. I loved Bree and Eason. So damn much. Even when those two broke my heart. Even when their struggles threatened to consume me right along with them. Even when I didn't know which way was up or through with them, I loved them. I loved their tenacity. I loved that this book was not only about them sharing and building what they were, but it was also about them discovering who they were. This book allowed them both to peel back the layers and the fronts and the sheilds, and to just become who they really were. It allowed them to embrace themselves, own themselves, fight for themselves. And along the way it also allowed them to realize that the one person who they never thought would mean anything, just might mean everything. This book allows you to journey with them after the devastation of losing their spouses, as they try to heal, but as they soon realize that they are feeling a hell of a lot more for one another and they ever thought they could. Both newly single parents, they are just trying to pick up the pieces. They are struggling to wade through that ocean of grief that is starting to consume them. They are honestly just struggling to put one foot in front of the other, but they soon find that the one person who gets it is the other. That strength and that bond and that friendship that grows soon sparks a flame that cannot be doused. What ensues in this book between them is something very real, very deep, and fiercely emotional. Bree and Eason thought the hardest part of it all would be picking themselves up after losing everything. But what they soon learn is that their new path is riddled with truths, and secrets, and lies….and that path ain’t easy. But what they also know and learn is that that path, while not easy in the slightest, might just be the path they were always meant to be on...together. What I loved about this book, and what I've loved about every book by Aly Martinez, is that she always perfectly balances that emotion, that banter, that spark and connection and romance, with a story that just can't be beat. She literally has everything in her books. She has characters with so much personality. She has moments that will make you laugh your ass off. She has other moments that will make you feel like you are dying and might actually drown in your tears. She has moments of pure swoon and heart. She has everything within her books, and the way that she so fantastically crafts and creates that through her words truly sets her books apart. The moment you read one of her books, you know that and feel that with everything within you. I know I have. A million times over, and it is the actual best. From the Embers Is truly one of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It had everything. It had this enemies to friends to lovers feel to it. It had a single parent romance going on, while it also had so much more. It had twists and turns and secrets and lies and truth to be revealed. It kept me on my toes. It broke my heart to smithereens, but it also put it back together again in the most beautiful breathtaking way. It had amazing complicated and dynamic characters that I loved with everything that I had. It had that buildup of intensity and that glorious level of angst to that topping point that I lived for. It just had a feel to it that I will never forget, a story that is still with me, and characters that I will love for the rest of time. Bree and Eason are truly some of the best characters that I have ever read. I loved their banter and dynamic. I loved that this book and its events forced them to not only look at their own lives, but to look at what they were sharing together. I loved that this story and its event made them re-evaluate everything they thought was important and who they were and who they wanted to be. I loved that they made each other want more. I loved that even though they had a very uneasy start, that this book allows them to see that there is so much more to the both of them. I loved that they also completely got each other. I loved that they weren't afraid to push for more when it really mattered. I loved that they had this he's and this rightness that shined on every page of this book. I loved that that spark and connection between them grew and intensified through every moment of this book in a way that felt beyond right and meant to be. I loved that with each other they could just be themselves. I loved that they could create a friendship and a family that was built out of the deepest love. I loved that they got to feel it all with each other, and more than that they truly understood it and embraced it. I am telling you now, there is no resisting the two of them. And more than that, you will not want to resist them. You will love them, you will root for them, you will feel every lick of it with them, and it will give you everything. Simply put, this book had it all. Aly Martinez once again delivers an absolutely phenomenal book from start to finish. Like I said at the start of this review, this book is her at her best. The storytelling and writing ability that she has is truly exceptional, and it shines on every page of this book. This book will own you. It will consume you. It will take over every single part of your heart and mind and soul and feelings and just everything in between. And you will effing love it. You will love what these characters give you. You will love how it keeps you and your heart and all of your feelings on their toes. You will love that you don't know what that next page will bring you. You will love everything between Bree and Eason. You will just love everything this book delivers to you. From the Embers Is one of the best books I've ever read. It is definitely a favorite of mine by this author, and it is a book that you need in your life this very second. Do not wait to embrace and live and feel this story. Do not wait on Bree and Eason and what they give you. Do not wait one more second to experience this unforgettable and all-consuming book. It will break your heart, it will make you work for it, it will steal your breath at times, but you will love it. You will love what it so authentically and deeply gives you. You will love the spark of it all. You will love how it turns your world and your heart upside down right along with these characters. You will love that it isn't easy, but through every word of it you know that it's worth it. You will love it all, and in the end, I promise that you’ll be damn glad you read this book. So buckle up, grab some tissues and a drink, and get ready for one hell of a story that you will never forget. By the end of chapter 1 you’ll be simultaneously hooked, mentally cursing at Aly Martinez for what she’s already doing to your feels and emotions, and loving every second of what you’re getting with these characters. And really, it doesn’t get better than that. Trust me.

Such a damn good book, cried like a baby through the first few chapters and then it got so cute and sweet. I expected one of the secrets but the twist at the end was unexpected, overall great story with amazing characters. I really appreciated Bree’s CEO status and her badassery, Eason was fucking cute and the kids too omg 🥺🥺 Also kind of wish it was longer and that we got to see more of their feelings developing but it was fine.
