Can't believe it's over T-T What a great ride. The ending left me wanting a little, but I suppose that's better than having the story dragged out forever. Overall, 10/10. Is it perfect? Maybe not, but I do think it's the perfect battle shounen. I'll miss it. EDIT: This review is about the story as a whole, not just the final volume. Can't believe it's over T-T What a great ride. Update (Chapter 203) Okay, Tanjiro was saved! Some people were not happy with this outcome, but I certainly was. Yeah, demon Tanjiro did have possibilities, but you know what? I do not know if Tanjiro could have really lived as a demon. He would not have wanted to live that way, and he certainly would never be able to live with himself if he hurt someone. He has honestly suffered enough, and everyone has already lost enough. They deserve to get a happy ending, so I am quite happy with the fact that Tanjiro got turned back! Update (Chapter 204) This was a very wholesome chapter! Sad about all the characters that died, and in this chapter we see the aftermath of everything that occurred. There was a lot of sweetness! The part that really got me was when Nezuko reminded Sanemi of Genya... My heart hurt yet felt so warm. Really sad that the next chapter will be the last. This has been an amazing journey, and all the characters have come such a long way. Even though the series is ending earlier than it was originally intended, I am happy with how it is ending. Our characters have lost a lot, but they completed their goal and now they can live in a world where no one has to lose their loved ones to demons any more. I can't wait for the next chapter. Based on the last panel of this chapter it looks like it will take place in the modern world, I can't wait to see what is going to happen! Update (manga as a whole) I really loved this manga! It has a lot of important life lessons in it and it was both comical and entertaining. It may have not had a deep and complex plot, but this manga was a lot more character centered, and I loved watching the characters grow and develop! I am really happy with how it ended because I got to see the character's descendants and reincarnations! I was really hoping this would happen because they deserve to be able to live a life of happiness!

Overall, this is one of the best shounen mangas that I've ever read. The vivid and real characters, the setting and the plot are done very well. The art style might not be the greatest but I found it adorable. 5 stars for the whole series, and I'm glad the ending was not too bad. Demon Slayer is, in general, a very overhyped series, that gained its popularity by its anime adaptation, which has stunning animation and soundtrack. However, it is not a bad shonen series. It is "short", it has interesting and different kind of art, characters are cool and have depth. What bothers me the most is the label that forces it to be only a shonen manga. It could be much more with its themes, characters and world. Overall, it did for me what I wanted - easy to read manga. The last volume fails a little bit in execution. There is the trope of "evolving" villain and I felt that it was cheap. I did not want this to be another Aizen or Kaguya and I was disappointed. I was pleased by how much depth Gotouge was able to put into side characters, though not everyone should have such a sad backstory - it makes sense in this world. In the last volume, there were some things that I felt were very cheap and rushed and needed a little more space or explanation, there were, however things I did enjoy - Tanjiros will to perform all steps of the dance, heavy causalities, or the flashbacks. When the author comes with another manga I will be there to read it. I wish she switched to a monthly schedule because that way she could polish the story more and it would be great instead of just good.

Major spoilers. I watched the anime before reading the manga; I picked up the manga at the spider forest arc. One feeling I got from this story throughout was that this was a comic being written by someone about their beloved OCs. The page-long (or longer) author notes giving backstory details about minor characters who only ever appear in a single flashback, for instance, felt like when a friend tells me about their OCs. This isn't necessarily bad -- on the contrary, it often added depth to the story and even when it was handled clumsily, it felt endearing. That said, there certainly were times when it was handled clumsily and felt unrefined. I have scads and scads of notes about my stories and OCs, but not everything will necessarily be worked into the final story. Although I doubt the author consciously felt this way/intended to come off this way, the lengths and lengths of explanation and "telling" (further supplemented by author's notes) felt like the author trying to control how the audience received the story. Very, very little is left open for interpretation because the author tells you what everything means. This makes the storytelling feel immature in places, despite being extremely moving elsewhere. As others have pointed out, the pacing of the story starts to get warped and uneven around the pillar training arc, and after that the pacing is simply messy. I would write this off as the same sort of storytelling immaturity that I felt elsewhere in the comic (this is, after all, the author's first long-form work) if not for the fact that the pacing was done so well until then. Why did it suddenly get so rushed? Some people theorize the author rushed the ending because of something happening in her personal life, so maybe it was caused by uncontrollable external factors. That said, it felt like there was an arc missing. I would've like to have seen an arc about Iguro and Kanroji. Their stories seemed to be the most abbreviated/awkwardly inserted of all the pillars, but their powerfully emotional death scene showed they had a lot of potential as characters. I'm sad we didn't get to see them in action more before they died. There were other plot lines that felt rushed (Zen'itsu's sudden growth, Inosuke's backstory being tacked on to the same demon that gives Shinobu's backstory, etc.). I wouldn't be surprised if the author had planned these backstories from the start, but the way they were executed felt like an afterthought. I was also frustrated with the 4D chess aspects of Shinobu and Tamayo's deaths. "Big demon absorbs beloved female character into his body, but in doing so is poisoned by said female character who is sticking it to him beyond the grave" is an awfully specific plot twist to use twice. I would've preferred if Shinobu had fought with Doma longer and sufficiently poisoned him in their fight, maybe just with slow acting poison or poison that activates when he uses blood magic (not sure the official English term for 血鬼術), or SOMETHING so that her death and Tamayo's death aren't essentially the same. I could go on about my issues with Shinobu's death but will save it for elsewhere. I had less issue with Tamayo dying this way because it can be seen as her repenting for her past of killing humans, and she has already lived a full life span (and then some). Some other complaints that could be listed in detail but which I will abbreviate for now: - Tanjiro becoming a demon was a great idea that wasn't executed to its full potential, IMO. - Nezuko's overall arc was so anticlimactic and frustrating. For a comic ostensibly about the bond between siblings, it felt wrong to take one primary sibling completely out of action for so much of the story. - Zen'itsu calling Nezuko his wife, despite her never agreeing to that (or even being capable of agreeing), was gross. The fact that they ACTUALLY GET MARRIED is an entire other issue. Which brings me to my final large complaint: the time skip forward to the present day was extremely cheesy. It wasn't unfitting, necessarily, as the whole story was full of a Buddhist atmosphere and themes of being reborn in the next life, but I wish the author had left it to our imaginations. The only thing the flashforward added that wouldn't have been more effectively left to our imaginations was the fact that Yushiro and Ubuyashiki are still alive. Without the time skip, it's implied Yushiro might die by suicide and we don't know if the curse has been lifted from the Ubuyashiki family. It's worthwhile, in a sense, to let the audience know that Yushiro chose to live and that the curse is gone. I think there would've been a way better way to do that, though, than the huge time skip and the parade of reincarnations/descendants of the cast. To go back to Iguro and Kanjiro: in their death scene (which actually made me tear up!), they confess they love each other and promise to marry in their next life, sure that they will find each other even if they are reincarnated years later. That was powerful! That was moving! To then be shown the present day reincarnations of them was..... deflating? Kind of like being hit over the head with it? I had already assumed they would definitely find each other; I didn't really need to see it on the page. This gets back to my earlier criticism of the author not knowing when to stop telling you things. It's clear the author had a detailed and complex world in her head. It's scary to put a world you created out there for others to read. It's understandable that you'd want to make sure they read it "correctly," as you intended. But once a story is out in the world, it leaves you. For better or for worse, it isn't only yours anymore. It takes shape in a slightly different way in the mind of everyone who reads it. I'm sure the author appreciates this idea, though, from the generally themes of her story. I know this review sounds very critical, but it's only because this story had a lot of potential that didn't seem to get fulfilled in the end. I enjoyed so much of the story a lot!! Probably my favorite theme was "there are no chosen ones; we all choose to help each other and that's how we're strong." It's a simple theme, maybe, but so many stories these days have a chosen one of some sort who ultimately is the only person that can save the day. Yoriichi is the "chosen one" in Kimetsu no Yaiba, but he fails to eliminate Muzan in one-on-one combat. He wins his battle but is unable to win the war when he is fighting alone. Rather, it's the ripple effects of his small actions -- letting Tamayo live, passing on his knowledge and skills to others -- that ultimately defeat Muzan hundreds of years later. Yoriichi says he was "born to kill Muzan." He's a chosen one with superhuman strength. It doesn't work; Muzan escapes. Tanjiro is not a chosen one. He works hard, and trains hard, but he's still the weakest of the pillars at the end of the story (not that he's a pillar, but counting him in with them anyway). He doesn't defeat Muzan alone, but with help from the pillars and his friends. The pillars can't fight Muzan alone either; if not for the (admittedly nameless, crowd-character) corps members who sacrificed their lives to protect the pillars, Muzan would've won. The author really made it clear that *everyone* is important in the final battle. I had issues with the final battle, but I liked how the author delivered on this theme. I could write a few essays on this comic, but overall, I will say: a largely enjoyable story, with many moving sections and strong themes, that unfortunately jumbled itself a bit in the third act, and had some weird issues with women. I hope this author continues to make manga; I look forward to her future work.

4/5 Stars (%80/100) Strong 4 stars because of a couple of things, otherwise it would get 5 stars from me. I really liked it that's for sure. However, I already mentioned in my previous reviews that the ending was a bit weak and stretched. I'm not going to spoil it obviously but I'm sure you'll get what I mean when you read it yourself (or wait a couple of years for them to animate). The characters are brilliant in my opinion, you could even sympathize with most of the villains. The story is interesting and makes you keep reading. The main reason I started reading this, like many people out there, is the brilliant animation, music and art style of the anime. In short, this volume is a bit weak compared to the others especially 20 and 22. Yet, as a whole, I think it is great and deserves the hype. I'm also a bit sad that it is over, now we have to wait for the new season(s).

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a series that made me cry (like, bawl like a baby), yell, get out of my seat, pace and just in general, get excited. This is, by far, the best series, manga or otherwise, that I’ve read in a long time. Well done, Gotouge Sensei. Well done.

This is a bittersweet ending. From what I hear Gotouge had to cut this a bit short due to moving out of Tokyo to care for a sick family member. I’m not sure how true this is, but either way, this is a great ending to a truly amazing manga. (view spoiler)[They beat him! They beat MJ! Things were a bit touch and go considering Tanjiro became a full-fledged demon who could walk in the sun. Inosuke puts it upon himself to deal the finishing blow, but he can’t because that’s his friend. It’s a heartbreaking moment. Thankfully, by biting Nezuko the demon cure still in her blood subsequently cured Tanjiro. All of the hashira except Sanemi and Giyuu die at the end of the battle. I cried a lot. Mitsuri and Iguro dying in each other’s arms hurt. Kaigaku is proven to be the ultimate dick when it’s revealed that he was the orphan that ran away and pinned the deaths on Gyoumei. The Demon Slayer Corp are officially disbanded and everyone goes back to their lives, whatever that may be. Sanemi reconciles with Nezuko and even pats her head, giving her a genuine smile when he sees Genya in her demeanor. The core four head to Tanjiro’s little cabin and build a new life. Then, time jump! It seems like everyone is either reincarnated or descendants of our favorite babies. We are introduced to Kanata and Sumihiko, Tanjiro’s descendants. Judging from Kanata’s eye color, Tanjiro married and had kids with Kanao. Zenitsu and Nezuko obviously married and had kids, with their descendants being Yoshiteru and Touko. Yoshiteru is definitely my crybaby’s descendant lol. Everyone else seems to be a reincarnation. Inosuke married Aoi (squee!) and their descendant is, weirdly enough, a botanist lmao. Gyoumei is a preschool teacher. Uzui is an Olympic gymnast. Mitsuri and Iguro run a restaurant, and Sanemi and Genya are cops lmao. Giyuu, Sabito, and his sister whose name I can’t remember are reincarnated as kids. Muichiro and Yuichiro are reborn again as twin babies. Toujurou seems to be the reincarnation of Kyojurou and is friends with Sumihiko. You see other Easter eggs like Haganezuka maintenance shop and the Shinobu sisters at an all-girls school. Ubuyashiki is inexplicably still alive. Yuushiro lives on and is now an artist for his paintings of Tamayo. Everyone seems to have gotten the happy ending they deserved in one way or another. The manga ends with a photo of our babies hanging in the Kamado household. Everyone who survived is in the picture smiling and it truly leaves it on a sweet moment although my heart twists at the absence of a few faces. I am sad to see that it’s over, but at least I have the anime to look forward to! Even if I’ll have to watch all of my babies die 😭😭😭 (hide spoiler)]

For such a phenomenal manga up until the last arc, I really feel like the author kind of just.... ran out of steam and needed to just get it over and done with. Which is NOT how I should feel about something that I enjoyed so much up until the end! I really do feel that there was so much more than could have been covered, and that even if the author had wanted to end things in the same place that they could have done so in a much more satisfying way :/ Still, on the whole I did really enjoy the manga from the beginning (and the anime is great too ;D). Just wish it had had a bit more "oomph" at the end to match the material that led to it. Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy) (view spoiler)[ Chapter 197. (view spoiler)[Inosuke and Zenitsu have arrived and are trying to prevent Kibutsuji from escaping before they can take him out… -- ...so why exactly did Tanjiro stab HIMSELF? Was it something to do with a demon blood technique? -- Himejima and Giyu are still alive as well, that’s a good sign! (hide spoiler)] Chapter 198. (view spoiler)[TANJIRO’S BACK! And just in time to save Inosuke from getting cut in half apparently! -- I’m lost. Why is Kanroji there? What’s happening? I mean… I think she may have cut off one of Kibutsuji’s arms? And Shinazugawa got the other one? -- OH MY GAWD EWWWWW. HIS FUCKING FACE OPENED UP AND HE HAS A GIANT FREAKING MOUTH THING AND JUST AHHHHH -- I think Iguro got in Tanjiro’s way to prevent him being eaten by the giant mouth? Maybe? Of course he may now be getting eaten instead... (hide spoiler)] Chapter 199. (view spoiler)[SUNLIGHTTTTT. TAKE HIM DOWN PEOPLE. -- Giyu’s helping Tanjiro keep the sword in Kitbutsuji to prevent him from fleeing. This is good! -- Well THAT is disgusting. He basically turned his body into a giant mutilated baby to use as an armor of flesh against the sun. -- The body is even ACTING like a giant baby. The FUCK. -- Shinazugawa and Himejima are hereeeeee! -- ….Did Giyu lose an arm too? Or is one just useless? There has been a LOT of stuff in a short period of time, and it’s been a while since I finished the last volume 8’D -- Was that Tanjiro? Did he take him down from the inside? (hide spoiler)] Chapter 200. (view spoiler)[So is this it? Is he dead? For real? ...Where’s Tanjiro... -- Welp. Himejima’s dead. Looks like he got to be with those kids he had tried to protect all those years ago though, so that’s good! -- Awwwwww. Are Iguro and Kanroji going to die together after she confesses she loves him? ;u; I do like the “if we’re reborn I’ll marry you in the next life” promise that Iguro made after she asked but DAMN this is bitter sweet. -- So Shinazugawa ALMOST died (saw the afterlife and everything) but is now back? -- Nice to see Inosuke is still Inosuke, and Zenitsu is still hopeless (and hopelessly in love with Nezuko) ;D -- HE DID. Tanjiro DID lose an arm.I wasn’t sure, but I thought he had! -- Tanjiro’s? Nope. Don’t believe you. (hide spoiler)] Chapter 201. (view spoiler)[He what now? He put his memories into Tanjiro whilst Tanjiro was in the giant baby or something? In order to be immortal and conquer the sun? WEIRD. -- OH FUCK. Is Tanjiro a demon now? He just grew back his FUCKING ARM. -- Definitely a demon. He’s burning in the sun. -- Oh great. Demon Tanjiro has the black flames too. Does that mean he’s super strong (or… strongER?) -- Can anyone actually defeat him? Everyone is in SHIT shape. -- Poor Inosuke ;u; He can’t kill demon Tanjiro because they’re FRIENDS and have been through so much together! (hide spoiler)] Chapter 202. (view spoiler)[NEZUKOOOOOOOOOOO. SAVE YOUR BROTHER. YOU CAN DO IT. -- LMAO. Trying to literally beat some sense into him. GO INOSUKE. -- THE FUCK IS THAT. -- Kanao? Do you have more of the demon-to-human serum? -- Did she do it? Did she manage to stab him with the serum? (Side note: did she get a mortal wound in the process? Because that spray of blood looked like it came from her neck) (hide spoiler)] Chapter 203. (view spoiler)[Weird sort of mind space thing… -- “Don’t leave me here”? Where exactly is “here”, Kibutsuji? -- Lot of people are trying to get Tanjiro to come back… a LOT. But hey, it worked! -- OH GOOD. Kanao is alive! (hide spoiler)] Chapter 204. (view spoiler)[Three months later? That’s a big jump. -- Tanjiro has an old man hand now? And one blind eye? Weirdddd. -- So THAT’S why Tanjiro didn’t turn Nezuko back into a demon after biting her. Because she’d had the cure already and had built up a resistance to Kibutsuji’s cells! -- Shinazugawa and Giyu are the only two pillars to survive to the end? SHIT. -- OH YEAH. And ninja guy! I’d forgotten about him! Although technically he WAS retired by the time the final battle occurred… Honestly though, I like this look a LOT more than the one he had as a pillar 8’D -- Oh hey! The sword-makers! And the demon slayer assistant peopl! -- Well… Iguro might have died but at least his snake survived! -- Giyu’s hair is SHORT. Weirdddd… -- So are Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke and Zenitsu all living together in Tanjiro/Nezuko’s family’s home? The one from the beginning? (hide spoiler)] Chapter 205. (view spoiler)[Who the heck are Kamado Kanata and Kamado Sumihiko? Sumihiko definitely looks like Tanjiro… And Kanata looks a bit like Kanao… did those two get together at the end? Are these descendants? -- THE HECK. Is that a descendant of Zenitsu? And why is he reading a book called “The Legend of Zenitsu”? XDD -- Great grandpa huh? Guess that explains how far in the future this is… Also… the girl looks like Nezuko. DID ZENITSU AND NEZUKO GET TOGETHER AFTER ALL?! -- Hashibara Aoba huh? Descendant of Inosuke? And also something to do with a blue spider lily. DUN DUN DUNNNN. THe fact that the flower blooms only a couple of times a year may also explain why Kibutsuji could never find it? -- That looks like a reincarnation of Himejima! And those two look like Kanroji and Iburo! (are those two married? They better be! Considering the final wish of the original two!) -- Kanata is nuts o.O Also very great at parkour clearly. -- Ubuyashiki has the record for oldest living person? That’s FANTASTIC. The family broke the curse! :D :D :D -- Reincarnation of Shinazugawa and Genya there by the looks of it… -- Yushiro’s still around! And he’s keeping Tamayo’s memory alive! ;u; ;u; ;u; (Isn’t he lonely though? Wouldn’t he be the last demon, as the only one that Tamayo created and with all Kibutsuji demons dying upon his destruction?) -- And there’s the picture of the “original cast” so to speak, to tie it all together in the end.
