This collection of deviously good stories warrants the shouting that I’m about to do! His narrative style is both mind-blowing and wickedly disturbing in equal measures and it immediately transports you into the depths of his orchestrated shadows – it’s terrifying and bone chilling. I’m a huge fan and I gobbled this up just as fast as I would a cake! Leash had a paradoxical meaning. Many might think about it in terms of an implement to take a dog out for a walk, but my horror influenced brain knew that this was going to be a vista of horrifying pain. I knew what I was getting into, and with that being said, I could still feel my heart pumping harder and harder, the sweat perspiring on my brow and my flight or fight response kicking into gear. I was scared and shocked and I fucking loved it! Brett has penchant for devilry and I was here for the show. There is no words to truly describe just how dark Leash starts and just how quickly the reader will descend into darkness and madness as the book progresses. This anthology will break the strongest of wills, the strongest of horror readers – it is raw, and it cuts the deepest of wounds. Brett knows how to wrap up his tales with a resounding and decaying bow – unwrap at your own peril! He has the reader in his clutches, we feel in the heart of the story, whether we want to be there or not. One of my favourite stories contained within this collection is Leash. A tale of family injustice and just not quite fitting in. A family that adores the great outdoors and take every opportunity to go camping. The years have passed and the evitability of time means that they only see each other during the holidays. They arrange to go camping in the Appalachian Mountains. An uttered warning from a grandmother should be heeded. A search for treasure and something unforgiving living there that does not welcome intruders. The story made me cringe with fear but rejoice at its ability to instil fear in its reader. The Perfect Cut is also a story that will remain etched in my memory for many a restless night. We talk about karma but just how far can you blame that for bad things that can happen to people who do bad things? They aren’t necessarily evil people just people that end up doing bad things. Shoplifting leads to breaking into a butcher’s warehouse to enjoy their wares. A metallic sound dragging along a concrete floor makes them pay attention – even in a stoned like state. A monster covered in metal plating, a killing machine awaits them. Can they get away unscathed and just who is the familiar looking monster that stares back at them? Leash and Other Horror Stories will keep you up all night – but definitely with the lights on. The stories feel like a cold knife digging into your back.

Creepy and entertaining, this is a solid collection of horror short stories that will leave you with chills. If you’re looking for fresh insight into horror, this collection will be one of your favorites. My favorite story from the collection: It Came with the Storm. I always love when the authors narrate the books. This one was no different. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Leash and Other Short Horror Stories is a collection of short horror stories that all seem to be intertwined. There's a man named Mr. Arnold who gets mentioned in the story It Came with the Storm, and he pops up throughout various stories. He ties them all together. I thought that was a nice touch with this collection. It Came with the Storm made me think of The Mist by Stephen King, but also had a Lovecraftian feel. I think this story was probably my favorite. The story Room 1317 gave me a Vacancy vibe (that's a movie with Luke Wilson and Jessica Biel). I liked that one too. Definitely didn't expect it to go the way it did. There's a Ten Foot Man in my Basement Eating Children was weird, but also kind of amusing. R.D. Balm is a fun little zombie story. And Something is Not Right About Those Flowers was another story I liked. Never trust people, and never go with them to a cabin in the woods. I did notice some issues with editing/proofreading. The book could definitely use a set of fresh eyes to go over it and fix some of the errors. They were a little bit distracting while reading. Overall, though, Leash is a mixed bag of stories, and fans of horror will find something within the pages that will thrill them. 3.5 stars from me.

Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This one was extremely fun. I really think this is a well done anthology and a lot of these stories were very creepy and enjoyable reads. I didn't think it was necessarily ground breaking in that a lot of the stories were enticing enough to read quickly and with full attention, but others were more generic at times, or more shocking than actually scary. I would probably still put this as one of the better collections out there for short horror, especially since the details in the stories are what gives this so much more than you usually get in a short story.

This book was a fun horror to read. I enjoyed the fact that the stories were all short enough to read each one in a single session.... and the thoughtfulness of the order in which the stories are placed. I absolutely adore horror in most of it's forms so for me this was a nice, quick bedtime story or two each night. While there is not a lot of new horror ideas or conceptions in the stories, it is worth the read for some light horror genre reading. I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not. Do you love creepy, and I mean creepy, stories? If you do, this is the book for you. Put on your anti creepy hat and settle in for some mind-boggling adventures. The author tells great stories, pulls you into them against your will, mixes them together and spits you out then leads you into the next one. Gotta find more of these books.

Great Read Not as twisted as I imagined, from the title, but a good read nonetheless. I’m going to follow this author and see what else he might have up his sleeve...

Sometimes I'm just in the mood to read a short story. It is a minimal commitment and you can get a good variety from it. This book has 13 short stories. There is some overlap between characters that makes it more interesting. The stories were good, but sometimes felt a little too abrupt. The book could also use an editor, as there were a few cases of odd word choice or formatting issues. Sometimes I'm just in the mood to read a short story.
