The first book seems to have a very slow start for me and I can't seem to get interested in the plot. There are so many unanswered questions: What is so magical about the paper, what is causing the princess to be on her deathbed, why would Sam be the scapegoat, who or what are the Thelns and why would one destroy Alec's apothecary? Sam loses her staff in a canal and reflects that it was one of the few ties she had to her mother. Sam loses her staff in a canal and reflects that it was one of the few ties she had to her mother. Chapter 18 - "It (the water) swirled where she'd been and where she thought the staff remained." Yet the next day it seems to be in her possession. Chapter 19 - "She leaned against her staff though she tried to conceal it." Sam is a thief. She knows how to evaluate her chances of success. I can appreciate that she wants to get her brother out of prison but she seems ridiculously intent on achieving this aim no matter how unlikely she is to succeed. I have a strong feeling that this storyline will pick up its pace but I just don't feel like slogging along until it does when I have other books I might enjoy more. Only a one star rating at this point since I haven't even finished the first book.

This series was fine - there wasn't anything technically wrong with it... I just didn't love anything about it. It constantly like I was reading filler for another book series. Everything felt like the liner-notes for another story... the characters all had little to no legit motivation, all of the interesting parts of the story were 'secrets' that we were intended to find out along with the characters but even with that I was disappointed with everyone involved. I don't know how this improves with the next installment... the author's dug themselves a pretty deep hole. I don't know how to get me caring about what happens next.

I like the series Overall this is a great series. I just really hate the main character’s attitude and lack of growth. “Lowborn” this, “lowborn” that. It’s exhausting. How can she be really good at so many other things, but still haven’t grown out of that attitude. I like the Alec character. The university parts of the book with him are very interesting. I’m hoping the “I suck because I am lowborn” stuff will evolve soon. Overall I love the series

Another very good series This series has plenty of action and intrigue. Sam discovers that she has abilities after she is healed by Alec (with the use of special paper). She and Alec are trying to find answers to many questions. Their adventure is captivating. I am looking forward to the next book- Tormina.
