   I knew in advance that I was going to like this; I love illustration books and this is a newly beloved series of mine. However, this completely blew me away. Included are all of the color illustrations Furudate-sensei has drawn for the series since 2012, which is pretty typical. The book is A4 sized, so it's quite easy to make out detail in the more complicated layouts. Furudate avoids a trap that has always particularly annoyed me - a lot of artists will compose an illustration with a focus in t I knew in advance that I was going to like this; I love illustration books and this is a newly beloved series of mine. However, this completely blew me away. Included are all of the color illustrations Furudate-sensei has drawn for the series since 2012, which is pretty typical. Furudate avoids a trap that has always particularly annoyed me - a lot of artists will compose an illustration with a focus in the center, only for it to be published in a book or magazine and be eaten by the binding. Where it went from 'pleased' to 'impressed' for me was when I realized that they had included the color pages from the manga's original run. Series like Haikyuu!! are published in weekly comic anthology magazines, chapter by chapter, and occasionally the artists are asked to draw the first page or two of the manga chapter in color. Unless you buy the weekly anthology magazine (which, if you're lucky, contains at least 2-3 series that you're following...and like 15 that you aren't), these color pages can be hard to find. They're rendered in black and white for publication of the separate manga volumes (tankobon) and even for the ebook versions. You might see them again if the series gets a special "perfect" re-publication run, but that's pretty rare for a series whose target audience is munchkins who don't have much in the way of spending power. Anyway, long story short, I was pretty excited that they included them. Then I realized that somebody had taken the "Complete" in the title very seriously - those weekly anthology magazines? Typically the covers feature characters from all of the included series, so someone went and snipped out each time the Haikyuu!! characters appeared on the covers. They included all of the little extra illustrations from the back covers of the tankobon and the light novels. They included art from a sticker pack that was once included as a freebie. Somebody rounded up all of Furudate's illustrations for the official Twitter account! THAT is dedication! There's an index at the back, indicating where each illustration first appeared, most of them including a quick notes from Furudate about the materials they used or what they were thinking when they came up with the image. I fell hard for this series three months after it ended and that will probably really affect how I experience it going forward. But an illustration book like this, where obvious effort was made to round up material that is often lost as time goes whooshing by, is an amazing resource. I'll never be able to interact with fandom as the series came out over the last eight years, but this gives me a firm foundation and reference point for the future.
