As can be guessed from the title there are ghosts in residence as well as people, and not all of them are friendly. Maureen arrives not believing in the supernatural but she is forced to rearrange her beliefs very quickly. When a murder occurs on her property she has to search out the killer herself and the information she obtains from her ghostly companions helps a lot. This is an entertaining book with some fun characters and a good story. When it came to the identity of the murderer I thought the 'who' was pretty obvious but the 'why' was unclear until the end. Also at the end were some rather tempting recipes. I will certainly be watching out for more of Maureen and Finn's adventures. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Greeted at the Inn by four oddball ‘porch rockers’ and the disagreeable manager, Elizabeth, Maureen gets a taste of what she’s going to have to contend with. She doesn’t believe in ghosts, but once she’s settled in a room she becomes a believer! LOL! Author Perry gives her ghost characters a lot of freedom—they’re not restricted to the Inn and can travel, and some of the ghosts that visit the Inn are well-known names I recognized which I thought was cool! The main murder mystery centers around the death of a ghost hunter and his success in capturing images that will prove his apparition investigations are true. A pool of suspects is on display early in the story that provide interesting decoys around the actual culprits. Maureen’s dog and the two cats, Bogie and Bacall that she inherits with the Inn enhance the cozy atmosphere of the old Florida charm in the Inn and the pet-friendly town. A great cast of supporting characters are formed in this first story who will support and move forward with Maureen’s vision for Haunted Haven. Various ghosts have their own haunting mysteries and humor livens up the plot! Recipes included. I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.

Be My Ghost is the first book in the new Haunted Haven Mystery series by author Carol J. Perry. I thought this was a good start to a new series. Just when she is trying to figure out what was next, Maureen gets notified that she inherited an Inn in Haven Florida. Maureen was a likable character and I enjoyed her journey. She is independent, focused and she has a wonderful dog Finn, who is a character in his own right. The secondary cast of characters is made up of a number of long-term residents, a few otherworldly residents, as well some of the citizens of Haven. What surprised me was the mystery. I figured out the identity of the killer early on in the story. For me, I thought it was obvious in the way this particular character behaved. Although, I did enjoy it as Maureen and her employee Ted tried to figure out who was attempting to frame each of them for murder. I enjoyed the first book enough to come back and see what the author has in store for book two. I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. The thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Was she dreaming the other night or was that really a ghost in her room trying on her clothes? What a fun read!! I was definitely in the right mood for this one! It's fun. It's spooky. There's death...a mystery...and old town feels. Very enjoyable. I can't wait for the next one. I sincerely appreciate Kensington Books for providing me with an ARC. When the department store that Maureen Doherty works at goes bankrupt, it's a stressful time until she and her failed guide dog Finn (he failed because he was too friendly) find their lives changed forever by an inheritance, ghosts and murder! I'm a big fan of Carol J. Perry's books and this first book, in her new series, was everything I'd hoped. The mystery was fast-paced and filled with red herrings. Maureen is not sure how to go about it until she gets some spirited advice. Be My Ghost is the debut of A Haunted Haven Mystery series set on the west coast of Florida (near St. Petersburg). I found Be My Ghost to be an appealing paranormal cozy mystery. There are some great characters and I love the setting. The author managed to strike the right balance between overly description and not enough detail. I liked our protagonist, Maureen Doherty. She is a smart, friendly woman who is a stylish dresser. Our resident spirit, Lorna Dubois is a delight. She is a fun-loving character who also loves fashion. The paranormal aspect is well-done and there is just the right amount of mystical. The whodunit is straightforward. This one can easily be resolved before the reveal (the who and why). I would have liked the mystery to be more of a challenge. I am hoping the author will up her game in the next A Haunted Haven Mystery. There is a fun cast of secondary characters in the story along with some cute animals. Maureen has a Golden Retriever named Finn and she inherited two cats named Bogie and Bacall. The town is pet friendly with other shopkeepers owning cats and allowing Finn to enter their premises. Since Haven seems full of interesting ghosts, I am sure there will be plenty of paranormal fun in Maureen’s future. There are some recipes at the end of the book for items featured in Be My Ghost. Be My Ghost is a hauntingly good time with a fashionista spirit, a player piano, a contemptuous manager, a gone ghost hunter, a troubled bartender, a determined deputy, and a bewildering inheritance.

    The Cozy Review

Be My Ghost is the first book in a new paranormal cozy series, “A Haunted Haven Mystery,” from author Carol J. Perry. It is fitting somehow that this book is centered around Halloween and a haunted inn and that ghosts play a main role throughout the story. Maureen loses her job when the company goes bankrupt, then inherits an old inn in Florida. The timing is perfect, and she sets out to start a new life, but she no more than gets to the Inn and discovers a body on the front porch. The timing is perfect, and she sets out to start a new life, but she no more than gets to the Inn and discovers a body on the front porch. Characters in a new series often develop over time, and this is a good thing as it gives readers a chance to grow with them. I have an issue with some in this story, namely Maureen. She doesn’t seem to think that inheriting an inn from someone she did not know is a big deal, even though it should be. Her personality takes some getting used to, and the ghosts need more depth to carry a series. The paranormal aspects were interesting and, hopefully, will evolve with subsequent additions to the series. The victim is an unknown; readers don’t get a great sense of who he was or anything about his personality. The suspects were easy to spot, and unfortunately, so was the killer. For me, Be My Ghost didn’t have enough mystery, ghosts, or twists to make it great, but it was fun to read. The inn is intriguing, and many would love to spend a few days there looking for ghosts. I enjoy paranormal cozies and reading the first book in a new series like this always brings me joy. Some further development of the characters, and perhaps more involvement from Maureen’s family, and a whole lot more curiosity from Maureen, will make this series a favorite for readers who love ghost-based books and characters that are a bit unconventional. Carol Perry is a gifted writer, and taking on a new series isn’t easy, but I know she will make it work. I look forward to the next book.

The MC seems to be bright and pretty straightforward but she’s very subdued. I didn’t get a huge sense of her as I was reading. Her dog says “woof” about 700 different conversational ways, which I thought was a little odd. I loved the dog, though! The writing was really good! Great descriptions and good dialogue throughout. You can tell this author is talented. The side characters were very fun, which is always a must in a cozy mystery. I also like that we’re just not sure why Maureen inherited the Inn. I enjoy a through-line background mystery on top of solving a murder. Overall, this was a cute book. It was a little low on action but it does have huge potential going forward as a series.

The author gives it a very old-world, colonial, and possibly even a Havana-ish feel with all the modern conveniences. I really enjoyed Maureen Doherty and Finn. They are the perfect main characters to feature this new fish out of water book. (Who doesn’t love an adorable golden retriever?!) Maureen is mid-30s, which is awesome, and she is down on her luck after her department store/job in Massachusetts closes, but the first mystery presents itself when she is given an old Inn in Florida by a seemingly unknown elderly woman. After moving in, Maureen discovers a death on the premises, but it is so much more then meets the eye...as it is a ghost hunter guest...and it is a murder. Plenty of potential culprits are present, everyone seems to have secrets of their own, and it seems that the Inn really is haunted. Maureen is trying to grapple with all of this, while trying to keep herself off of the suspect list, figuring out the dire financials of the Inn running in the red, all the while trying to get her life back on track. With the help of good-looking bartender/chef Ted, Nora (her lawyer), Lorna (I’ll leave the reader to find out who she is), and a whole host of quirky and fun live-ins and neighbors, the reader is taken along for a ride that takes place during Halloween (the best holiday ever!!!!). The murder/mystery was spot on, the character cast was awesome, there are plenty of mysteries yet to be solved, a ton of source material for future books, and an awesome female main character that is smart, reasonable, realistic, likable, and has a love for adorable cats, dogs, and coffee alike. I really, really enjoyed this book and I am very much looking forward to where this series will go. I think it will end up being one of my favorite and go-to cozy mystery series for sure. Ghosts and dogs...how could this go wrong?. Those are two of my favorite things. That being said, I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. Maureen Dougherty finds out, right after losing her job, that she has been left Haven House Inn by a woman that she, nor her parents, have ever heard of. Despite the oddness of the situation, Maureen packs up her entire life and her dog, Finn, and moves from Minnesota to Florida. What she finds is an inn that is in a dire financial situation...and that is haunted. What follows is a delightful, if half baked, murder mystery. There were so many great things about this book. I loved the diverse cast of characters. Finn, the golden retriever, was my favorite, although Lorna, the ghost movie star, was a close second. A good dog always adds such warmth and depth to a story. Finn’s job was to keep things light. Lorna, the lingering ghost of a B movie actress, gives the lead character a friend and forces her to accept that things aren’t always what they seem. There are also Molly, Gert, Sam, and George. These characters live at the inn in exchange for various services. Then, there’s Elizabeth. She’s the manager and is incredibly rude and bitter. All members of the hotel staff are annoyed by the presence of a ghost hunter. This is a fun story with a variety of characters. As many things as this book had going for it, there were also a few drawbacks. Firstly, we never find out why Maureen inherits the inn from a complete stranger. The murder mystery part of the story feels predictable and half-baked. The method and motives are tired. While this didn’t take away much of the pleasant story, it was a bit irritating. Overall, this book was a reasonably fun way to spend an evening.

When she gets home she finds a letter from a law firm in Florida asking them to call her about a bequest that was left to her. With nothing tying her and her golden retriever, Finn, to the area, she decides to make the move, even if she doesn’t know who her benefactress was. Arriving in Haven, Florida Maureen and Finn discover their new home is an old, supposedly haunted, historic inn right near the Gulf Coast waterfront, When Maureen finds a guest dead, she quickly becomes the prime suspect and vows to find the murderer and save the inn. But who to trust and who had the means, notice and opportunity to kill the man and set Maureen up to take the fall? All in a days work if Maureen is going to save the inn that is now her home. A great start to a new series from the talent Carol J. Perry. I loved her previous series based in Salem, MA and I was curious how she would parley Florida into her style…boy did she deliver! A great cozy for mystery lovers and fans of Perry’s.

This fun start to a new paranormal cozy mystery series is full of crazy characters, both living and dead, that are sure to keep you entertained. This was okay, but there was a lot not working for me. If I inherited an inn from someone I'd never met, I think I'd be a bit more curious about it. Maureen didn't seem all that concerned. And if I met an actual ghost, I think I'd have some questions! But, again, Maureen wasn't fussed about it. A lot of the side characters came off as kind of creepy to me. Particularly the female lawyer and the bartender. And what's with Maureen's parents? She talked to them once. I guess we see where her lack of curiosity comes from. If this were the author's first book, I might give another one a shot, but I see that they have an entire other series they wrote before this one, so I think I'll pass on any future books.

Maureen inherits an inn in Haven, Florida just as her career in Boston as a retail buyer comes to an end after ten years with the closing of the department store she has worked for since college. This venture is a new one for her and there is little actual money involved as the place has turned into a money sink. And the manager resents her. But a resident ghost likes her. Say what? Yup, the place is said to be haunted by the ghosts of former visitors. But the problem right now is that Maureen is the chief suspect in the murder of a ghost hunter who was poisoned the same day that she arrived! Let the sleuthing begin! It's a marvelous story with clear and interesting characters, plot twists, red herrings, and more. Loved it! I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. From her Witch City series, I knew that Perry has a deft writing hand, not too elevated for a cozy, but enough to be interesting and nuanced. Be My Ghost takes her all the way down the Atlantic coast from Salem, MA, to Florida for a solid start to a new series. It seems as though authors regularly struggle to get all of the introductory material into book one of a series smoothly. This one has an inconsistency or two, and in spots the mystery becomes a bit overworked, but, overall, I like the pr From her Witch City series, I knew that Perry has a deft writing hand, not too elevated for a cozy, but enough to be interesting and nuanced. I loved the setting and characters in this book. As a lifelong Florida resident, I loved the small town coastal feel & all of the old people. 🤣 All of the towns residents were quirky and fun - I loved reading all the little side conversations and gossip. The mystery fell a bit flat for me and the ending was obvious and the unraveling was slow going.. I also really, really wanted to see more of the ghosts!! But as a lighter, atmospheric read I enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing what Maureen and I loved the setting and characters in this book. A murder mystery with a twist. The ghosts in the story are fun and although not totally believable add to the story. I liked most of the characters (those I was supposed to!) and the plot. A couple of loose ends are not tied up. I was not keen on the police characters . Loved the descriptions of the place and buildings which brought it alive. Lots about clothes and interior design too, but it read easily and didn't seem too much. The crime was well thought out. I will look out for more from this A murder mystery with a twist. This was a good story, despite the added ghosts. I’m not a believer in them. That said, this book was very good, and all the human characters realistic. I figured out soon into the book who the murderer was. And it wasn’t a ghost!! If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries I think you will like this book.

This is the most delightful cozy mystery I've had the pleasure of reading. I loved Maureen and Finn, and I was very invested in whodunnit. The inn is a place I now desperately want to visit! I can't wait for the next book in the series, as there's a particular mystery I'm desperate to see solved. (No spoilers!) This is the most delightful cozy mystery I've had the pleasure of reading.
