I'd almost forgotten how much I love being lost in that world! This was such an enjoyable holiday novella, cute and funny, just what I've come to expect from Tessa Dare! 💖

A sweet, short, Christmas story. And a freebie 😄 He came to stand before her. And then he dropped to one knee. She jumped to her feet. “What are you doing?” He stood again. “I mean to propose marriage. You’re holding the ring. I’m not being precisely subtle about it.”

When She Was Naughty is quintessential Tessa Dare in short form! She offered it as a freebie and it's a funny, charming holiday romance that puts a historical spin on the ugly Christmas sweater in the form of an overly festive waistcoat! Chloe has spent the year trading jabs with the earl, trying to get him out of his stiff shell. On Christmas Eve she finally has a foolproof plan- trick him into wearing a Christmas waistcoat festooned with lopsided snowflakes, baubles, and tassels! Thanks to Tessa Dare for bringing joy into a difficult year!

When I saw Tessa Dare comparing this short story to the ugly Christmas sweaters scene in the Bridget Jones movie, I knew I had to read it immediately! Tessa Dare truly wrote a very cute Christmas novella. It was very heartwarming and it's the perfect quick read to kick off this new year. What a happy surprise this was! This is exactly what you would think a novella from Tessa Dare would be, sweet and fun. Hopefully this will tide me over until The Bride Bet is released. Side night: the title is super silly.

Trigger warnings: public humiliation????? This was fucking adorable. Honestly. So short and yet so cute. Tessa Dare has said on Twitter that this was inspired by Mark Darcy's ugly reindeer jumper at the turkey curry buffet in Bridget Jones' Diary, which is honestly the best inspiration for anything ever. Essentially, it's about a young woman who's determined to take a stuck up jerk down a peg or two by convincing him that everyone in her family wears ugly waistcoats to Christmas gatherings. And then he wears it and she's like "Oh my God, WHAT HAHAHAHAHAHAHA" and then she realises that he was doing it with the best of intentions and that maybe he isn't as stuck up and jerky as she thought. And I loved every single second of it. Do I wish it was longer than 56 pages? Absolutely. Will I be happy with anything Tessa Dare wants to write? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Silly. Ridiculous. I went to bed and couldn't get this story off my mind. Usually if I don't like a story I grade it and move on. But this one is bothering me, so... I didn't pay for it, thank God. And I appreciate the author giving her hard work away as a gift to fans. I just don't understand why she wrote this? The prank at the start that sets this plot in motion is clever and fun and I was hooked. Then we meet Uber mom who can read her kids minds. First eye roll. Our couple dances together. He' Silly. The prank at the start that sets this plot in motion is clever and fun and I was hooked. Then we meet Uber mom who can read her kids minds. First eye roll. Our couple dances together. He's pissed. She feels bad. I WAS HERE FOR IT. I forgot mama and instead enjoyed their verbal foreplay. The dance ends and he’s outta there. You just know she’s gonna follow... Unfortunately, it's all downhill from here. He's frustrated because he loves her - even though it soon becomes clear she thinks he's acted like a supercilious dickhead with a stick up his butt EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY'VE SPENT TIME TOGETHER . So when he whips out a ring and appears ready to propose she's confused. And so are we. The ring is random and how can we go from 2 people on totally different pages to marriage? Random aside: Mama shows up during this awkward Come to Jesus confession/unhappy hour and breaks up the party. And then she asks what happened. Oh reader, come on. MAMA ALREADY KNEW. SHE READS MINDS. For the love. Things go from completely incomprehensible to worse when our heroine spends one ENTIRE night revaluating her thoughts, opinions, and feelings and is miraculously convinced she's in love with him, too. Uh. Huh? Second eye roll. Or is it third? He's disheveled, and she's an unreliable and fickle female who throws every original opinion out the minute a man tells he loves her, and WTF. Zero plot or character development. Zero chemistry between the principal characters. Zero effort to show us how these two appear to have any single foundation on which to build a marriage. This story is bizarrely bad.

3.75 stars rounded up Tessa Dare's book, The Bride Bet, that is supposed to be released in February 2021 is postponed. So I have to compensate with this short one. I thought it was ADORABLE. Yes, the main issue is "misunderstanding" -- as in Justin thought his adoration was painfully obvious while Chloe thought it was Justin being condescending. Men talk Mars while women talk Venus kind of situation. Because of its length, it didn't come as annoying, and I believe they would be just fine together 3.75 stars rounded up Tessa Dare's book, The Bride Bet, that is supposed to be released in February 2021 is postponed. I do this every time - I read a short story or novella and somehow expect it to have the same depth as a novel four times its length, which simply isn’t possible. This was a charming short story (~50 pages). I loved the setup, the teasing, the banter, the anachronisms. They just fall in love so damn fast. I realize I’m unreasonable for wanting a whole novel of development in a story so short, but it’s damn hard to adjust my expectations appropriately. Rating: 3 stars What I Liked: This has got to be one of the cutest books I read all year. It’s light and fluffy and fun and easy to read and was perfect for Christmas day. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters (view spoiler)[I’m trying really hard to think, but I feel like this is the only Tessa Dare hero that stands out to me as being more of a Mr. Darcy type - a bit stiff and awkward rather than pure arrogance. (view spoiler)[I loved his declarations of love towards her - they were gorgeous and adorable, and all of the different sentiments such as keeping the waistcoat despite it being hideous because she made it, the fact he wouldn’t accept that ring back because he’d never meet a woman with eyes like hers again - it was just very sweet. Overall: It was short and sweet with a lovely central romance and some very cute scenes. Would I Recommend It?: Yes, if you want an opposites-attract historical romance with a lot of pining and some very cute bits. Would I Read Something By The Author Again?: Yes.
