For the past decade or so, Brigham Young University Press has done a tremendous service by publishing a series of religious classics from the Near East. Prior to this volume, volumes of hitherto unpublished or untranslated classics in the Arabic language appeared. This volume is the first in Syriac, and as such brings St, Ephrem's writings to a considerably wider audience. The type-face is large and clear, the translations read poetically, and the critical notes are outstanding! I am not one who naturally appreciates poetry, nor do I have any training in it. But I did find the wonderful blend of images, metaphors and Christian truth in Ephrem to be very appealing and at moments profound.
