Great idea, terrible, or lazy realization. I saw this book recommended in another history book, and thought, "great!" Let's have an in-depth look at why the Philadelphia constitutional "founders" rejected a plural executive and more. Let's have them talk about their experiences. AND, let's have this all put in context, and with historical analysis by the author, post-constitutional follow-ups from the founders (say Madison 20 years later), etc. Did we get that? AND, let's have this all put in context, and with historical analysis by the author, post-constitutional follow-ups from the founders (say Madison 20 years later), etc. Did we get that? No. All we get are extended block quotes from Madison's diary and notes from a few other attendees. No "backgrounding," such as, say, Gerry speaking about Massachusetts' new post-Revolution state constitution influencing his stance on a federal constitution issue. No comment by Gerry later on. Nor notes from abroad by Jefferson, John Adams etc. And certainly not the historical analysis by the author, such as: "Were the Founders naive about political parties and trying to prevent them?" It's informative enough, by going beyond just Madison's diary, to at least not be a one-star. But, really, it's not worth the time.
