Albert Lewis Kanter's adaptation of this early American classic is jittery and rather characterless. James Fenimore Cooper's novel is quite thrilling, set against the French and Indian war and the bitter contest between the English and the French to take possession of North America. This book has various prominent Native American characters who ally with the European combatants in the war but are nevertheless proud and heroic custodians of their own traditions and legacy. The adaptation, however, doesn't quite capture the book's flavor and its historic appeal. Stephen Addeo's illustrations are more than decent but he too is let down by the adaptation.

Umm, seriously disappointed. I LOVE this movie, it is possibly my all time favorite movie. This is one of those rare instances when the movie it light years better than the book. I hated his style of writing and his views towards woman and American Indians is mildly appalling, even taken into account the views at the time the book was written.

Disappointing and not the best adaptation in existence, it feels overly rushed too. I'd recommend the Marvel Illustrated graphic novel by Roy Thomas instead, which is much more faithful to the original, and extensive without being overspread, and with art that's of superior quality.
