Obama's plan for change is put forth as the latest expression of a movement for justice: a movement that has swept forward with the collective energy of great leaders such as Martin Luther King, Robert F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Harold Washington--Chicago's first black mayor-- and others who have bent the "arc of morality" towards justice. This examination of Obama's early years in Chicago explores how his life touched and was touched by a beleaguered and sinking community in one of Chicago's poorest neighborhoods and how his work with the residents of Chicago's Woodlawn and Altgeld Gardens communities has shaped how he thinks, how he works, and his vision for the American people. Stepping back from recent events, it becomes apparent that Obama's unlikely victory is not merely the story of a single, remarkable individual, it is a story of a movement and of the people who drove that movement forward and one that will cascade down the generations.

Written prior to Obama becoming president this book provides interesting aspirations for his term. The lofty desires of the author were fine ideals however, with the benefit of hindsight, we can see how they didn't all come to fruition. The investigation was of historical US politics is extremely interesting particularly the Christian right. Well worth a read for anyone wanting to learn about the history of US politics since the 1950s. Written prior to Obama becoming president this book provides interesting aspirations for his term. A lot of this book is only interesting from a historical perspective. It was written just before Obama Presidency began, so there is a lot of speculation about what his Presidency would be like. In saying that, a lot of the book is not about Obama, but gives the historical events that made a Obama Presidency possible, at least in the opinion of the author. One of the most jarring things about the book is that it is quite hopeful about the future, probably a bit too hopeful in light of the Trump P A lot of this book is only interesting from a historical perspective. This book is retelling of America’s XX century history and just a tiny bit of B. Obama. Nothing at all what I expected from it.

I picked this us at a Castle Point CLP fundraising do where the author was speaking. it was really interesting and the book summaries Painter's experience well. In terms of campaigning style and how it translates: some things I think we do better in the UK already, other things are not transferable but in terms of building small cell group like clusters of local campaigners then that is what we need to do. A book full of facts and dates. Starting way back in american history it shows how the movement for change ultimately led to Barack Obama's election. Interesting book and well written. Was interested in an Obama biography, but almost half way through this one and it has barely even touched on his life.
