It's been about 10 years since I last read this and it's still as good.

A visit to the ER granted me ample time to finish this book. It was very interesting narrative. As I mentioned before, the author is very active in the storytelling: he gives reasons for creating the characters the way he did, explains events in terms of their ability to drive the plot forward, and describes scenes in terms of places he's been to or has trouble imagining. The characters struggle to create meaning in their lives and the author seems to subvert that meaning by depersonalizing it A visit to the ER granted me ample time to finish this book. The characters struggle to create meaning in their lives and the author seems to subvert that meaning by depersonalizing it and writing it off as writing convention, pop psychology, and wish fulfillment. The lines between autobiography/reflection and fiction/storytelling are repeatedly crossed and.. I'm not sure. I didn't fall in love with this book but is is one that I enjoyed and I look forward to reading it again.

If you feel like taking a chance on a recent debut novel, then there's really no reason why it shouldn't be this one. Apathy's understated ambition and wry personality make the pages turn just like you want them to. I read it in one sitting. VandeZande knows what he's doing, and I'm looking forward to him doing it again.
