America won its freedoms through revolution, but that was not enough to ensure them for posterity. Our founding fathers recognized the importance of articulating those freedoms in words that could be put in print to guide the policies of the fledgling nation and speak to generations of Americans to come. The United States Constitution and Other American Documents collects America won its freedoms through revolution, but that was not enough to ensure them for posterity. Our founding fathers recognized the importance of articulating those freedoms in words that could be put in print to guide the policies of the fledgling nation and speak to generations of Americans to come. The United States Constitution and Other American Documents collects five essential documents that form the foundation of our democracy and express the spirit of America. This volume includes the full text of the Constitution and its Amendments as well the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Included as well is the full text of Common Sense, Thomas Paine’s incendiary pamphlet that advocated independence as the only remedy to hostilities between the American colonies and the British monarchy. The five immortal documents gathered in this beautifully designed volume are timeless embodiments of America’s democratic ideals.

this is a nice, easy, short read. 2016, and we have an election coming up. everybody keeps talking about the constitution and about selecting judges who "adhere" to the constitution. there isn't much to interpret, but there is definitely some. i found the 2nd amendment to be amazing. it's just one sentence and declares that since you might need to call up a militia at a moment's notice, and since they'll need to be armed, then everybody has the right to be armed (paraphrase, of course). it outli this is a nice, easy, short read. 2016, and we have an election coming up. everybody keeps talking about the constitution and about selecting judges who "adhere" to the constitution. there isn't much to interpret, but there is definitely some. i found the 2nd amendment to be amazing. it's just one sentence and declares that since you might need to call up a militia at a moment's notice, and since they'll need to be armed, then everybody has the right to be armed (paraphrase, of course). it outlines the organization of the government. it specifically states the president will have "executive powers" ---wow, talk about being open to interpretation! the language is a bit old-fashioned, of course; but i was impressed at how sophisticated these men were! it really doesn't take long to read it. you can get a copy at the library.

This was a cheesy looking bargain book at B&N...picked it up for $6. However, it contains the entire Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and Thomas Paine's Common Sense. Nifty! It was pretty great to read these documents afresh. I recommend it to everyone! Also, I don't think I'd ever read all of Common Sense. It made me go out and buy a history book of the American Revolution. This was a cheesy looking bargain book at B&N...picked it up for $6. It was a fascinating exercise to actually read these documents in their original language (rather archaic and I kind of wished for footnotes to explain some of the wording - maybe I need a version of this book for dummies!) and realize anew what a bold venture this was. My only caveat is that I wish the documents had been in chronological order instead of - I assume - most important on. My only caveat is that I wish the documents had been in chronological order instead of - I assume - most important on. Reading the Constitution before the Articles was a little less satisfying than it would have been to read the Articles first and then see how they were expanded and adapted to become the final Constitution. And "Common Sense", advocating for these measures, should have come before the measures themselves. I realize I could have read the book out of order but by the time I realized it I was already halfway through. But this is a small issue and there is probably a good reason for it. Stirring reading and I strongly fee;l we all need to maintain copies of these original documents before some government begins to alter it which in our online society would be all too easy. The last thing we need is an Alternative Facts Constitution!

I purchased this book on a trip to Washington DC. I saw the Constitution and Bill of Rights and decided I wanted to take a copy home so I could read it at leisure and reminisce if feeling especially patriotic. The book also contained the amendments to the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation and Common Sense by Thomas Paine. I found these extras to be a nice surprise. The cover of the book is very well illustrated.

Did anyone know George Washington didn't sign the Declaration of Independance? That and other mysteries are held in this collection.

Of course I had to rate this 5 stars! We are still the longest republic in history and its because of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence!
