As first executive of the newly formed United States he gives 8 State of the Union addresses from January 8, 1790 to December 7, 1796 to his Fellow-Citizens of the Senate and House of Representatives. The issues facing our nation were very much different from present times and reading these addresses are a reminder of how far we have come. Interesting and educational.

This is yet another work that every United States citizen should read. They shouldn't do it because of being forced to but, to truly get a sense of where the leaders and fathers of our country were coming from in the design of our great nation. These State of the Union addresses demonstrate a far cry from the current ideals and goals of American politics. George Washington was very straightforward in his addresses. He stated what happened in the previous year to affect our nation for the positive or negative and made clear cut suggestions for the coming year. However, it is also stated many times that Washington had already provided documentation to the necessary department or branch of congress to illustrate some of the statements he had made. Washington understood that a State of the Union address was, just that, to describe the current state of the union. It wasn't an opportunity to push an agenda. It wasn't a televised circus, although was made available in print form via papers so the public could read it. It wasn't full of rhetoric and devoid of any true meaning. I was only able to honestly give this 3 stars, but, not because of the lack of importance of said documents. It was only because I personally, had a hard time staying focused on the writings. I can't really enjoy a set of writings if I have a hard time focusing on them. However, I also believe that every American who can should read these addresses. If one reads the words of Washington on the ideals of our country at a time when it was still at its beginning, one will find that the ideals of our country are drastically misguided compared to the intent of our forefathers. It is a set of works that is in the public domain, and can be obtained for free from many places.
