The second book in this book introduces one of my favorite book boyfriends of all time, Calder Hart. He is the nemesis and half brother of Commissioner Rick Bragg. Rick is brave, honorable, selfless, and the passionate nature that simmers just underneath the surface saves him from boring. Calder is as blatantly seductive and carnal as Lucifer himself which means every woman should be on high alert. It's funny about things you rediscover during a reread. I always imagined him with Turquoise eyes, apparently I gave him one of Montrose' s (Francesca's brother in law) features because they are actually very dark instead. Once again Francesca is using her new found investigative skills to meddle in police business. Rick gives token protestations, but he enjoys how it keeps throwing them together. This book reveals more of his past and the reasons he insists on keeping Francesca at arms length. I still don't understand how the writer managed to make Francesca and Rick's relationship crackle with sensuality without adding very much sex. In contrast we do find out Calder is a freak (in the best way possible). My original rating stands because even though relationships hold my interest, the mystery was just okay.

This book was a lot better than the first in the series Deadly Love . The mystery, relationships, and overall plot evolution worked so much better and captured my interest so much more. The mystery, relationships, and overall plot evolution worked so much better and captured my interest so much more. I think a lot of the improvement had to do with the character of Calder Hart. He's so intriguing. At once so cold and seemingly heartless (pardon the pun) there were such subtle moments when Hart let his vulnerability show. I loved his burgeoning friendship with Francesca, who although undoubtedly reluctant to admit it or just unaware is every bit as intrigued by Hart as I was. I can't wait to keep reading the series to see where this relationship will go. Bragg on the other hand, had his moments but ultimately got overshadowed by his devil-may-care younger brother. He's characterized as the white knight, loyal, honourable and oh so good. And yet he is the one who committed the worst betrayal of omission. I knew going into this series what Bragg's secret was but it still irritated me when it came out. Francesca's naivete continued to irk me at times but it wasn't as irritating as the first novel where her judgments of people really grated on my nerves. She still has some growing up to do but I figure that'll come over time as the series progresses. That's partly what I enjoy about this series, the characters slowly develop in a real and fundamental way because the story goes on and on. The mystery was so much more interesting in Deadly Pleasure and I really liked that it incorporated Hart both because I really enjoy his character and also because it gave the readers an opportunity to see much more interaction between Hart and Bragg, bitter half-brothers. This dynamic is another reason why I enjoy the series. The brothers are very similar in ways and yet ultimately very different in the way they perceive the world and judge people. Hart is much more protective of himself and yet he seems to have a very innate sense of loyalty and hidden gentleness about him that few people get to see. Bragg on the other hand is more open and like I mentioned before comes across as the good and honourable man. I liked that each brother has a bit of darkness and bitterness in them as well as gentleness. My heart lies with Hart though, what can I say, I always yearn for the dark natured man who has a hidden kindness and vulnerability beneath the jaded exterior. All in all a great book in the Deadly series, and definitely a good progression from the first.

But in the course of her investigation she catches her brother-in-law having an affair with a murder suspect and Rick confesses a devastating secret. The dead body in this book is Calder Hart’s father. Francesca hopes to mend the rift between the two brothers and needs to prove Calder innocent to do it. I love the relationship between Rick and Francesca and there are so many great supporting chraracters like her perfect sister, snooty mom, and pickpocket assistant. If you like turn of the century New York, wealthy and powerful men and beautiful and smart women you should give it a try. If you are sensitive to the way alpha males treat the women they love then this may not be the series for you. It’s a favorite series of mine and they really need to be read in order.

Francesca was with her father, Andrew Cahill, her mother, Julia Van Wyck, and her brother, Evan, attending a party at the home of Stanford White. Evan had recently become engaged to Sarah Channing. He was being forced to marry her by his father in exchange for Andrew paying off his gambling debts. Evan had recently become engaged to Sarah Channing. He was being forced to marry her by his father in exchange for Andrew paying off his gambling debts. Evan would not even try to get to know Sarah because he felt he was not ready for marriage. He also didn't like being forced into the marriage. Francesca's sister, Connie, was married to Lord Neil Montrose. Francesca had recently seen Neil with another woman, Eliza Burton, and Connie pressed Francesca until she confessed about seeing Neil with another woman. Connie packed up her two girls and left Neil. She went to her best friends house. Connie was visited by her mother, Julia, who told Connie that she must go back home before anyone found out she had left Neil. Connie did not want to but she did return home to act as if nothing happened. Neil told Connie that he had an affair because they had sex so rarely. Connie felt bad but would not act in less than what she felt was proper to change. She knew that Neil wanted to have sex with her but she would not allow herself to let him know. She felt like admitting that she enjoyed sex would make her no less than a whore. That was just unacceptable to her. The party that night turned out to have circus entertainers that were deemed too provocative and they soon headed out. As they were leaving, a woman gave her a note saying that she needed help and to meet her that night. Francesca had handed out cards saying that she was a crime solver. The police commissioner, Rick Bragg, also attended the party along with his half brother Calder Hart. Francesca went to meet the woman and found out she was mistress to Paul Randall, father to Calder Hart. Paul was dead in her house and Georgette wanted help disposing of the body for fear that she would be blamed. Francesca sent a ten yr. old street kid, Joel, to get the Rick Bragg, the police commissioner. Rick tried his best to keep Francesca from investigating the murder. He then approached her and asked her to work with him and let him know if she found out anything helpful. Francesca had worked with Bragg previously on finding the abducted child of one of the household staff. Francesca was attracted to Bragg and they had kissed. Francesca talked with Calder and two women whom Calder used as his alibi for the murder time period. Francesca soon found out that was a lie and told Bragg. Bragg called Calder in for questioning and Calder admitted to being alone in his house. He had dismissed his staff. Calder did not want to admit that it hurt for his father to have died before Calder could get an answer from him as to whether or not he cared for Calder. Rick and Calder both had the same mother but different fathers. Their mother had died and she sent letters to both their fathers. Rathe had shown up to claim Rick but Paul Randall did not. Both Calder and Rick went to live with Rathe and Grace. Lily was Rathe's mistress prior to him marrying Grace and Rathe knew nothing of his existence until Lily's illness and subsequent death. Francesca's parents and Calder had dropped hints as to Bragg not being able to commit himself to her. They stated that their relationship could go nowhere and she was warned to not pin her hopes on him. She fell in love with him regardless. She was curious but so no reason to guard her heart. After the funeral of Paul Randall, Bragg took Calder in for questioning and Francesca interrupted their fighting once again. After Calder walked out, Rick told her that their relationship could go no further because he was married. His wife lived in Europe and ran around with other men and lived extravagantly and he continued to allow it and paid her bills, regardless of the fact that he couldn't afford it. Rick had no intention of divorcing her. Francesca felt bad but then convinced herself that her feelings were OK because he didn't love his wife and she was a bad person. Francesa had been contacted at the funeral but who she thought was the brother of Paul's mistress. He told her that he really wasn't her brother and agreed to meet her that night. She contacted Joel to come with her but he was unavailable. She was afraid but after what she had learned about Bragg, she wasn't ready to see him just yet. She was on her own with Mark Anthony, who said it was one of many names he went by. His real name was Sean MacKenzie. He had know Georgette for 15 years. He as a con artist but not a killer. She went with him to meet and talk to Georgette, Paul's mistress. She found out that Sean had been blackmailing Paul. Paul's daughter, Mary, had mentioned at the funeral that she had overheard a conversation with her father and Calder and that he was blackmailing her father. Francesca knew now that it was Sean that Mary overheard arguing with her father. Georgette also told Francesca that Paul's son, Bill, had come to the house and seen his father dead in her parlor. Francesca knew then that Bill knew who had killed his father and he was protecting that person. She knew that Paul's wife, Henrietta, knew about her husband's affair. She knew that she was faking being upset at the funeral. There were no tears as her handkerchief was dry and she saw her acting like she was fainting at the arguing between her children and Calder at the funeral. She was acting like she was fainting but her eyes were open so she could see that she did not actually fall. Anthony (Sean) became upset because the blackmailing came up and Francesca was afraid they were not going to let her go because they looked more guilty than ever. Francesca ran out and ran into Calder Hart. Bragg and the police were right behind. They arrested the couple and took them to jail. While they were being questioned, it came out that Georgette had seen Bill at her house after the murder. Bragg left to go get Bill. Calder Hart had sent Francesca home in his carriage and followed Bragg to the police station with Georgette and Sean. He wanted some answers to who had killed his father. Calder also told Bragg to stay away from Francesca because she was a good person. He liked her and didn't want to see her ruined but being involved with Bragg with him being married. In the meantime, Francesca had not gone home but instead she went to the Randall home to confront Henrietta about her husband's murder. She snuck into the house and into Henrietta's room, as the front door was not locked. She thought Henrietta had shot her husband. Bill and Mary came up to their mother's room and Bill hit Francesca over the head and tied her up in one of their bedrooms. Francesca came to and worked one of her feet loose and knocked a porcelain doll off a shelf, broke it and used a shard to cut herself loose. She ran down the stairs and was followed by Bill. She got trapped in the kitchen and picked up a cast iron pan and hit Bill over the head with it and knocked him out. She then noticed that Mary had a gun and threw the pan at her as the gun went off. The pan hit Mary and knocked her out also. Bragg and the police showed up to get Bill as this was going on in the kitchen. Francesca told Bragg that she had caught the murderer for him. Francesca was bleeding where her hands had been tied and Bragg thought that she had been shot. She met her sister, Connie, the next day for lunch and Calder showed up. He and Connie flirted with each other and agreed to have lunch on Friday, it was Tuesday. Francesca was shocked at Connie's behavior. They got up to leave when Bragg came in. He told her he wanted to talk to her and they talked. Bragg admitted that he was in love with Francesca and she admitted to being in love with him and he walked away, leaving her to talk with the reporters about her having caught the murderer. She noticed a woman in the group watching her closely. Francesca excused herself to talk to the woman when she ran away. She ran in front of a carriage and Francesca pushed her out of the way and fell down. The woman ran off. Bragg helped Francesca up and she told him that she had another crime to solve...

Deadly Pleasures was one never ending train of boaring monotonous BS… Ok I no that is a little harsh . and I am never harsh but the readers need to no the truth The book is based on a murder mystery which was considerably boaring and so predictable The hero and heroine where likable however the secondary charecters had more of a lead in the story which was confusing and frustraing.. As far as romance is concerned I would rate it a 2/10 .. now im not one to enjoy a book with no sex however I can manage if it has a good story line which this book didn’t Brenda does build the tension between the hero and the heroine but all she gives you is a few bread crumbs … and leaves you starving for some lusty action.. All you get is a couple of kisses BANG .. that’s it … which were totally uneventful i might add There is some bedroom action between the secondary characters but its flat out boarding because you cant really warm to them .. and clearly writting a love scene is not her forte The whole book is totally cliché in every sense of the word ****BIG SPOILER ***** The ending is dissapointing after suffering through the entire book .. it’s a HEA ending yes but totally not what the reader wants to read .. Anyhow I have nothing noce to say so im leaving it at that .. I was sooooooo disappointed because “spendor” is honestly one of my top 10 reads

Just a 3?... I know, I know! I have no idea why I didn't really enjoy this book. Brenda Joyce is one of my Top 5's, but this book wasn't all that great. Maybe it's because I went out and bought all the books in the series and just found out she doesn't plan on FINISHING the series (per her publisher). For the life of me I can't believe she wouldn't fight to finish a five or six book series. I think her fans deserve at least a proper ending. I almost didn't read this book -- the first 50ish pages were awful. Francesca, Bragg, and Hart were all equally stupid and annoying as hell. Thankfully I stuck with it and actually enjoyed the last half of the story.

I really like the tension between Fran and Bragg. The forbiddeness but the pull that can't stop them is very well written. The mystery was not as robust as it could be and the addition of Bragg's half brother is interesting but not sure where that is going to lead. I guess I must keep reading!

Still loving this series. I really like how it starts right after the first one left off. This book I think was more about the development of the characters and relationships than the murder/mystery. It didn't hook me as much as the first one. Looking forward to book three.
