There's a lot of opinion in here, mostly regurgitated left-of-center opinion. I was hoping for a bit more serious engineering work, complete with supporting physics. Didn't get it. This is about at the level of a Popular Science infomercial of recent vintage. An addendum with the math necessary to address the issues, and more balanced treatment of the various systems of addressing ground water issues would raise the quality and usefulness of this work considerably. I really wanted to like this book. The things that got left out of it hurt it considerably. The concept has a lot to commend it. Mr. Egg has actually done hands-on work in this field, with considerable success. An account of how to design one of these systems from scratch, figuring volumes for the areas to be heated/cooled, volumes for the ground reservoir needed, and methods for tying the pumping end of things to solar or wind power would go far to making this the book that it ought to be....

This is no dry textbook; it is written with wit and voice and is full of engaging stories. This book is a readable, comprehensive look at geothermal heating and cooling for homes and small businesses – a highly promising technology that offers clean, renewable, domestic energy at a rapid payback. It is aimed toward home and business owners, but is presented with sufficient depth and detail to be a must-read for contractors, installers and anyone else associated with the fast-growing industry. It is aimed toward home and business owners, but is presented with sufficient depth and detail to be a must-read for contractors, installers and anyone else associated with the fast-growing industry. It simplifies and explains core concepts with dozens of great illustrations, complemented with photos of real-world systems that help visualize what I'm getting into. I learned that almost anyone can take advantage of geothermal heating and cooling, no matter where they may live . Pay back periods appear to be remarkably quick, even less than a year in some cases. It clearly explains the different types of ground loops being installed, and what loops are best for what conditions. This book was full of instructive and humorous case studies of jobs gone wrong and common problems. I learned how to pick a reputable contractor, how to spot cheats, and how to verify the quality of systems. It was much easier to read that I expected and held my attention quite well.

Finally - a book with a comprehensive description about practical geothermal usage. This book describes the benefits, application, and science behind geothermal heat pumps and their ability to heat and cooling our homes and office buildings. This technology has a promising future with the potential to drastically reduce our carbon footprint.
