Originally published in 1960 it's an account of a British guy's travels through Iran. An interesting read. A couple of times when old attitudes jarred. But it brings a sense of the social change and pressure in Iran, while still being primarily a travel book, full of description, some lightly shared research, and people. Great writing, too. I love a quote from an unnamed guidebook: "The last Persian lion was seen -- and naturally shot -- by an Englishman, in 1931." In the late 1950’s, Michael Carroll and a friend travelled through Iran. Carroll spends days lounging around a tea house in Isfahan developing relationships with locals that will help him the rest of his journey. He and his friend boldly drive through the country in their Land Rover, many times into areas even locals won’t go. In some communities they are welcomed and feted while in another they are chased out by an angry mob. Carroll also gives a master class in bargaining, in Chapter 4, where he discusses their efforts to purchase the rugs of their dreams as well as other vintage and antique items. Reading about the wonderful people and incredible destinations of Iran makes me hope for a day when I will also be able to visit safely.

A great snap shot of travel in the 1950's. Two British young men travel through Iran in an old and somewhat unreliable Land Rover. They encounter a few 'situations' where running away seems the best option; their sense of humour shines through in patches. A memoir of travel and more gentle times in Iran; sad to realise how much has changed. A great snap shot of travel in the 1950's. I love these old travel accounts. Roads run out, vehicles break and you just stop where you are
