The early chapters in this book start with excruciatingly simple concepts (This is a monitor; it is an output device.) and by the end of the chapter get into overly technical stuff such as the inner workings of microprocessors and RAM. In the later part of the book, every chapter ends with a very slightly different angle on the same security ideas, over and over. I guess they didn't call it "comprehensive" for nothing. Despite these annoyances, the book does make a lot of varied and complicated computer concepts seem simple. It also includes a lot of diagrams and images (which are sometimes helpful and sometimes I swear thrown in only to add some visual variety.) Special features at the end of each chapter present real-world applications and somewhat controversial issues for further consideration. Also, I just feel the need to point out that we read the entire book. No class ever assigns the entire book! LIS 636

Used for my graduate course 6080. The tech jargon is easy to grasp and the authors explain in detail the concepts used in technology. The section on the evolution of computers is interesting. The labs are most helpful. I recommend getting the most recent version and the CD inside the book is essential. the cd can be downloaded to a portable device like a flash or your lap top and you have it with you at all times for practice purposes. the CD has the entire book plus much more that would be virt Used for my graduate course 6080. I recommend getting the Book with CD!

Please Note: My review refers to the Concepts book (the 10th Edition) accompanying the MS Office 2007 training course. This book was the last of my course. After wading through it I can see why my teacher said... 'not many people complete the Certificate II in I.T.'
